Biography* Patrick McCabe, ca1813-1865:
Born in Ireland, Patrick first appeared in the United States in 1836 residing at 35 Elbow Street in Troy, Rensselaer County, New York. By September of 1839, Patrick, who was literate, was living in McHenry County, Illinois, where on two occasions during that month he purchased McHenry County land from the United States General Land Office in Chicago. These two purchases totaled one-hundred-sixty acres consisting of eighty acres each in Sections Fourteen (14) and Fifteen (15) all in Hartland Township. Patrick paid $1.25 per acre for this land, a total of two-hundred-dollars ($200.00). In early 1844, he forty more acres in Section Thirteen (13) of Dunham township (the next township west of Hartland) from the government and that fall, sold the eighty in Section Fifteen (15) to his brother-in-law Matthew Conerty. In early 1845 he bought another twenty acres in Section 16 from the government.

He continued to farm the remaining one-hundred-forty acres, until 1855. In March of that year, he sold the forty-acre parcel. In March of the following year, 1856, he sold the last one-hundred-acres and moved to Fillmore County, Minnesota. During the fifteen (15) plus years that Patrick lived in McHenry County he bought and sold a total of two-hundred-twenty-acres. After deducting his initial outlay of three-hundred-sixty-dollars ($360.00) plus various notes and mortgages, Patrick cleared a profit of more than two-thousand-six-hundred-dollars ($2,639.28 to be precise). Pretty good return on investment!

Patrick wasn't as fortunate in Minnesota. Upon arrival, he acquired one-hundred-sixty-acres in Section Fifteen (15) of Fountain Township and another one-hundred-sixty-acres in Section Fourteen (14). On 22 April 1865, Patrick was stricken with lung fever. He was visited several times by Doctor Redmond but died five days later on the 27th. He was buried in the Catholic cemetery in Carrolton Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota.

In his early 50s, Patrick died intestate and heavily in debt. His estate was appraised at three-thousand-seven-hundred-forty-three-dollars ($3,743.00) including land, livestock, farm implements and stored grain. He owed in excess of eight-hundred-eighty-dollars ($880.00) including mortgages, real-estate taxes and bills from various creditors. Eventually, half of his 320 acres were sold to pay those debts. Son Mathew McCabe, co-exectutor with Catherine McCabe, Patrick's wife and Mathew's mother, did not discharge his duties in anything like a timely manner. The case dragged on for years and was finally settled in August 1874.

Biography* Catherine Conerty McCabe, ca1813-????:
We don't know when Catherine immigrated to the U.S.A. We also do not know when nor where she married Patrick McCabe. Further, we have assumed that Mary McCabe, born 1830 in Troy, Rennselaer County, New York was Catherine's first child. But there are a two disturbing facts surrounding this assumption. One, Mary McCabe was born when Patrick and Catherine were still teenagers, both about seventeen. And two, there is a 10-year-gap until their next child.

Catherine may have had a brother Matthew Conerty who also immigrated. If they're not siblings, it's likely that Catherine and Matthew were closely related. We believe this because:
1) They are close in age;
2) They both lived in Troy, New York in the mid-1830's;
3) They both lived in Hartland Township, McHenry County, Illinois in the 1840's & 50's and;
4) Two (and possibly) three of Matthew's sons lived in Fillmore County, Minnesota in the 1860's, 70's & 80's.

After Patrick died in 1865 Catherine continued to live in Fountain Township until at least mid-1875. No evidence of what happened to her after that.

Biography* Catherine "Katie" McCabe Delaney, ca1840-1927:
Catherine was a first generation Irish-American. Both parents were born in Ireland, Catherine was the second of nine children and the second of seven daughters. There is no direct evidence of her birthdate and place, but Katie was probably born in either 1839 or 1840 on the family farm in Hartland township, McHenry County, Illinois. One of the witnesses at her 1866 marriage is listed as Patrick Anerty. Could this be her first cousin Patrick Conerty? We have assumed that it was. The other witness was Elisabeth O'Brien. After her marriage to Thomas Delaney, she lived for many years on the Delaney farm in Carimona township, Fillmore County, Minnesota.

Katie, about 87, died on a Friday in Preston, Minnesota at the home of her daughter Mary Stanton, who was the informant on the death cert. Katie, who had been in poor health for some time but seriously ill for only few days, had been living with her daughter for about five-years. Cause of death was arteriosclerosis, chronic edocarditis (about five-years) and chronic nephritis (about six-years). Katie was attended by Dr. Geo. R. Love of Preston. According to her obituary, Katie was nearly 92-years-of-age which would put her birth year as the second half of 1835 - four-or-five years earlier than likely. Katie was survived by daughter Mary (Mrs Ed) Stanton and son Michael. She was predeceased by her husband, one son and one daughter. Four sisters also survived: Mrs Anna Madden and Mrs Elizabeth O'Hara of Fountain, Mrs John Laivell of Chatfield and Mrs Mary Enright of Lanesboro. Father Doyle officiated at her funeral which was held at St Liguori's. Out-of-town attendees included: Peter Delaney of Ramona, South Dakota, the John Enright family, Tom Scanlon, Timothy Lynch, M/M John Conly, and Jim and George Redmond all of Lanesboro, Mrs John Rahilly and family of St Paul and the Frank and Henry Laivell families of Chatfield. Undertaker Loyola Ferdinandt of Preston was in charge.

Biography* Matthew Patrick McCabe, 1842-1925:
Although his tombstone has a birth year of 1843, believe that Matthew was actually born in 1842. Born in McHenry County, Illinois, he moved to Fillmore County, Minnesota with his parents and siblings in the early 1850s. By 1870, he had amassed real property of $4,900 and personal property of $1,000. Matthew moved to Sioux County, Iowa in 1875 where he homesteaded northeast of Hull, Iowa. Per the 1880 agricultural census, Matthew owned 81-acres of land. The farm was valued at $1,300 including land, buildings, fencing, implements, machinery and livestock. The value of goods produced on the farm in 1879, including goods used/consumed, sold or on-hand, was $380. Goods produced included calves born, butter, eggs, hay, barley, corn, oats, wheat and potatoes. A detailed transcript of the census schedule is attached to the note above dated 01 June 1800. In 1900, two Weir boys, his wife's nephews, were living with them. In 1913, Matthew was farming the East Half of the North East Quarter (80-acres) of Section 4 in Sheridan Township.4 In 10 July 1916, the McCabes sponsored a dance in their barn. The Clemens Orchestra furnished music for dance. Matthew and Hannah retired from farming in March 1920 and moved into Sheldon.

Matthew, a resident of the Boyden, Iowa vicinity for 50 years, died at his home in Sheldon, Iowa on a Friday. He was 83-years-of-age and was survived by his wife, four of his nine chiildren: Mrs. James Curtis of Hull, Mrs. Mike Gossen of Rock Rapids, Mrs. Frank Buren of Hull and Matt McCabe, Jr.of Boyden Also six sisters, all in Minnesota: Mrs. Anne Madden and Mrs. O'Hara of Fountain, Mrs. Fallon of Eyota, Mrs. Lavelle of Chatfield, Mrs. DeLaney of Preston and Mrs. Enright of Lanesboro plus eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Matthew's funeral was held on Monday at Saint Patrick's Catholic church in Sheldon. There were a great number of relatives who attended the funeral, including niece Mrs. Daniel (Katherine Ryan) McCarthy and son John from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Matthew was buried in Hull, Iowa with five daughters who predeceased him.

The Great Deyoe Cattle Case
In 1891, Matthew precipitated a legal action against a man named Deyoe charging him with stealing about 100 head of Matthew's cattle. It became a very famous case in Iowa partly because a change of venue forced by the defendant accelerated the cost of the trial to the state to something in excess of $5,000. After two trials, Deyoe was found guilty in 1893 and sentenced to two-and-a-half years in the penitentiary at Anamosa, Iowa. Deyoe was released on $2,500 bond pending appeal to the state Supreme Court. In 1896, the Supreme Court reversed the verdict - 'eveidence did not support conviction' - and freed Deyoe. The case is mentioned in a history of Sioux County written by Dykes in 1942 which includes pictures of Matthew, his wife Hannah and their only son Matt, Jr.

Biography* Elizabeth McCabe O'Hara, ca1848-1932:
As with most of the children of Patrick McCabe and Catherine Conerty, we do not have an accurate record of Elizabeth's birth date. The birth date calculated from her death cert which lists her age at death as 74y06m03d would be 08 June 1858. And although the month and day may be accurate she was at least ten years older than 74. Born on the family farm in Hartland township, Elizabeth was the sixth of nine children and the fifth of seven daughters. She moved with her family to Fountain township, Fillmore County, Minnesota at an early age. In 1870, Elizabeth was living with James and Laurie Thrasher in Chatfield township of Fillmore County and was employed as a weaver. In 1875, she was living with her widowed mother. In 1882, at age 34-or-35, Elizabeth married widower Peter O'Hara, who was about 25-years older, before witnesses M. Scanlon and Mary E. Enright (her 20-year-old niece?). After the marriage she and Peter lived in his house in Lanesboro, Fillmore County. Husband Peter died in 1889. In his will Peter left Elizabeth the household furniture, $300, the use of the house for life and one-third of his real estate7. In 1895, she was still living in Lanesboro and two nieces, Molly and Maggie Madden, were living with her. By 1905 Elizabeth was living in Fountain Village with her sister Anna Madden8. By 1930 she was listed as a lodger with her niece Bernice Rahilly's family at 1025 Portland Avenue South in the 7th ward of Saint Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota.

Elizabeth, about 84, died on a Saturday at her sister Anna Madden's home in Fountain Village. Anna was the informant on the death cert. Cause of death was apoplexy due to hypertension & arteriosclerosis. Elizabeth was attended by physician H. M. Shaug of Chatfield, Fillmore, Minnesota. She was survived by two sisters and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral was held on Monday. Undertaker Loyal A. Ferdinandt of Preston, Fillmore, Minnesota was in charge.

Biography* Ellen McCabe Laivell, 1852-1937:
As with most of Patrick McCabe and Catherine Conerty's children, there is conflicting evidence of Ellen's birthdate. Even her death cert is inconsistent. In that document her birthdate is listed as 24 June 1855. In the same document it is calculated as 02 July 1855 from her age at death - 81y/10m/06d. And the birth date on her tombstone agrees with neither of those - 14 July 1856. We're pretty sure that she was born in 1852 and we have taken the birth day and birth month from her tombstone. Ellen was christened by the Rev. H. T. Brady. Her sponsors were her father's brother, Owen McCabe, and Catherine Keen. Born on the family farm in Hartland township, McHenry County, Illinois, Ellen moved, with her parents and siblings, to Fountain township, Fillmore County, Minnesota as a child. It was here she grew up and after her 1876 marriage she lived in Fountain township until 1887 when the family moved into Chatfield City of Fillmore County. Ellen and John had five children, one who died in 1899. She was occassionally referred to as Helen or Nellie.

Ellen, who lived with her son Frank, died on a Saturday at age 84. Her funeral was held from Saint Mary's, Chatfield, on Monday and was officiated by the Rev. Wm. F. Coleman. Those attending the funeral from out of town were [her relations noted in brackets]: Mrs Stella Laivell [son William's widow], William & John Laivell [son William's sons] and Miss Frances Manahan (all of Minneapolis); M/M John Rahilly & daughter Genevieve [wife a Madden niece] (St.Paul); M/M Matt McCabe [husband a nephew] and M/M John Buren [wife a McCabe niece] (both of Sheldon, IA); Mrs McCarthy [a Ryan niece] (Sioux Falls); M/M Horihan, Mrs Mulvihill, M/M John Enright [husband a nephew], Mrs Nick Connelly, Mrs Ed Connelly (all of Lanesboro); M/M James Mulroy, Mrs Larry Connelly & daughters, Dan Moore & daughters Mayme & Alice, Misses Agnes & Loretta Walsh, James Walsh, M/M Richard Walsh (all of Fountain); John Brogan, Mrs Bessie Gilchrist, Vincent Gilchrist & Leon Gilchrist (all of Rochester); Will Spencer (Willmar, Minnesota); M/M Raymond Gilchrist (Eyota); M/M Fay McCarthy (St.Charles).
