Biography* | | Katherine "Kate" O'Brien, 1843-1914: Believe that this is the second Katherine born to Michael O'Brien and Mary McCarthy based on records in America. In 1880, for instance, she is listed with the Peter Walsh family and her age is recorded as seven-years-younger than her sister Nora O'Brien (Mrs Peter) Walsh. Katherine's recorded age is also three years younger and five years younger than the two Michael O'Briens in the household, one of whom is believed to be her brother. Other records in America of her birth year, inconsistent though they are, universally suggest that she was from five to eleven years younger than she would have been had she been born in 1843, the birth year of the Katherine for whom we have a christening record. Katherine immigrated to the U.S.A. circa 1880 before either of her parents died. After her sister Nora O'Brien Walsh died in 1895, Katherine continued to live with the Walshes, kept the household and raised her sister's children. She never married. Katherine died at home on a Friday at age 59. Cause of death was pneumonia (lobar). The attending physician was Dr. S. A. Peake, 705 N Kingshighway. Her brother-in-law, Peter Walsh, with whom she had lived since before her sister died, was the informant. Katherine's funeral was held from the home at 3107 North Twelfth Street on Monday and then to Our Lady of Good Counsel. Harrigan & Sheahan Funeral Home, 2618 Morgan, was in charge. |
