Biography* Isabel H. Almond McCarthy Baumann, 1906-2004:
Isabel graduated Stoughton High School in 1924 and Teacher's Training Course in 1925. She attended the University of Wisconsin and taught in rural Dane County schools. In 1937, selected by the Dane County Extension agent, she joined a group of women known as the "We Say What We Think Club." For more than 20-years the group did a talk show once a month on radio station WIBA discussing issues of interest to rural and urban listeners. Isabel was elected Treasurer of the Dane County Farm Bureau Women in 1937 and devoted the next 33 years to the organization. In 1959, she was elected state chair of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau for Women and a member of the board of directors of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation. Isabel developed a program of tours for members of the Farm Bureau and Wisconsin Extension Homemakers in 1964. The group was known as the "Wisconsin Town & Country Travelers." For 21 years Isabel arranged and escorted at least 100 tours ranging from one day to 24 days in length. The destinations included every state in the union, every province in Canada, Mexico and 17 European countries. She was a 4-H leader for more than 15-years and taught parliamentary procedures to newly elected officers. In 1971, Isabel was awarded the Friends of 4-H for outstanding service to the Wisconsin 4-H Council and was recognized by the University of Wisconsin College of Agriculture and Life Sciences for Meritorious Service to agriculture. She was a member of the Stoughton Area Retired Teachers Association, Dane County Extension Homemakers, Twentieth Century Club and St. Mary's Court 626 Catholic Order of Foresters.

Isabel, 98, died on a Wednesday at Waunakee Manor Nursing Home. She was survived by one son, three-grandchildren and seven-great-grandchildren. A memorial visitation was held on Saturday at Cress Funeral Home, 1310 Emerald Terrace, Sun Prairie. Memorials to the Friends of the Sun Prairie Library were preferred.

Biography* John D. Sweeney, 1851-1946:
John came to the Dakota Territory in 1878 from the home farm in Bristol Township, Dane County, Wisconsin where he had received an 8th grade education. He homesteaded on land ten miles north of Colman in Moody County. John built a house on this land and then returned to Sun Prairie to marry Margaret McCarthy. On 1 March 1882, he and Margaret moved to a 160-acre farm in section 33 of Fremont Township in Moody County, where they lived until November 1910. At that time, they moved to Flandreau. In 1930, they owned a $3,000 house at 411 Pipestone Avenue in Flandreau's 3rd ward. In 1930, the house was valued at $1,500. John's wife Margaret died in 1941 and by 1945, John had moved to Brookings where thier daughter lived.

John, age 94, died on a Friday at the home of his daughter in Brookings, South Dakota.

Biography* June Delbridge McCarthy Rabe, 1905-2006:
June was the youngest of six and the fourth daughter, all born in Illinois. Her father John was a first generation English/American. He and the mother Ada were also born in Illinois. In 1900 the family lived an a farm they owned free of mortgage in Malta township, Dekalb County, Illinois. By 1910, they had moved to South Dakota and were living on a rented farm in Prairie township, Union County. In 1920, they were living in a mortgaged house in Sioux Falls township, Minnehaha County. By 1925, June had graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls, was living apart from the family in rural Sioux Falls and working as a clerk. The family was living in Wayne township just to the west of Sioux Falls. By 1930, June had completed three years of college at Augustana College and the University of South Dakota, was working as a stenographer for the highway commission and living with her brother Carleton and his wife Martha in an apartment of a quadplex at 616 Minnesota Avenue South. In 1935, June was working as a secretary at a Sioux Falls Construction Company and still living with her brother at 2000 South Minnesota. In 1938, she married Waldo McCarthy. The marriage was performed by Rev William Issenhuth (a Catholic priest) before witnesses John McCarthy (Waldo's brother) and Mrs Hazel Soderstrom (June's sister). June was not a Catholic. She was raised a Congregationalist and did convert to Catholism some years later. In 1939, June worked 17-weeks as a bookkeeper for a building construction firm and earned wages of $450. In 1940, she and Waldo were renting an apartment in a duplex at 1010 West Fifteenth Street for $35/month. By 1945, they owned their home at 1204 South Main Avenue. During this period June was a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, the History Club, Republican Women’s Club and McKennan Hospital Auxiliary. Husband Waldo died in 1964 and in 1979 the widow June married Herman Rabe. They split their time between Sun City, Arizona and Sioux Falls until Herman passed away in 1997. She then moved into the Prince of Peace Retirement Center in Sioux Falls.

June, 100, died on a Wednesday. She was survived by a son, daughter-in-law, three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, eight nieces and a host of other relatives and friends. Her parents and five siblings preceded her in death. The funeral was held on Saturday at the Catholic Church of Saint Mary in Sioux Falls with Reverend David Krogman officiating. Music was provided by the Saint Mary Consolation Choir. Miller Funeral Home was in charge.

Biography* Alice B. Cooney McCarthy, 1912-1971:
Alice was the eigth child of ten and the third daughter. Her father Daniel was born in Ireland. He immigrated 1864/5 and was a naturalized citizen of the USA. Alice's mother Gertrude was first generation Candian-American born in Iowa. Both of Gertrude's parents were born in Ontario. Alice's five oldest siblings were born in Iowa. The second five were born in South Dakota. Her parents farmed in Mitchell township, Davison County where Alice grew up and completed 4-years of high school. In 1935, she was as a bookkeeper in the city of Mitchell. Sometime later she moved to California. In 1940, Alice was living with two sisters and her mother in San Francisco. They were renting for $35/month at 1510 Leavenworth Street. Alice, listed as married, was working as an accountant with a finance company. Her husband John was living in Fresno, California. In 1939, Alice worked for 28-weeks and earned $600.

Alice, age 59, died on a Saturday. She was survived by her husband John, three children, three grandchildren, siblings Julia Languille, Elizabeth Buckley, Maurice, Mark and Jack Cooney. The funeral was held on Wednesday at Saint Emydius Catholic church. Valente, Marini, Perata & Co, of 4840 Mission, was in charge of arrangements.

Biography* Ruby E. "Tess" Krause McCarthy, 1924-2002:
Tess was one of fifteen children born to Russian immigrants John Christ Kraus and Amelia Meier (Meyer). We know about thirteen of the children and Tess is the ninth of those thirteen and the last of four daughters. She graduated from Racine Horlick High School in 1942. Upon graduation Tess worked as an artist at Western Printing in Racine. She was married to Victor Wayne Hinze from 03 August 1949 until 1981. Tess then married Russell McCarthy. She was a member of the Madison Art Guild, the Midwest Watercolor Society, Artistic Women on Location, and was a past president of the V.F.W. Auxiliary Post 1593.

Tess, 78, of Markesan, died at home on a Friday. She was survived by four children, all from her first marriage, seven grandchilden, a sister Carolyn Weitzel of Racine; four brothers, Edward (Martha) Kraus of Kenosha, Benjamen of California, Donald (Helen) Kraus of Racine and Alvin Kraus. Tess was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, six brothers and three sisters. Funeral services were held on Tuesday at the Deerfield Lutheran Church at 206 S. Main Street, Deerfield with the Rev. Larry Sexy officiating.

Biography* Rose C. McCormick McCarthy, 1866-1951:
Born in Minnesota, Rose came to Clare Township in Moody County, Dakota Territory with her parents while a young girl. On 8 October 1903, Rose, a 38-year-old resident of Egan, South Dakota, a single womam with an 8th grade education, made homestead application number 3634 for the 160 acres of the northwest quarter of section 29 in township-105-north of range-78-west in Lyman County (P.O. Vivian), South Dakota. The property was described as "quite level prairie; grazing land". She built a house on the land in April 1904 and established residence on the 10th of June of that year. The house was a "substantially built" frame structure of approximately 8x10 feet consisting of one room. The exterior was covered in tar paper. Rose harvested ten-tons of hay in the 1905 season; cultivated five-acres to crop and harvested another fifty-tons of hay in the 1906 season; and planted six-acres to crop in the 1907 season. Vivian neighbor's John Morrissey, Roney P. Acker, Joseph Acker, and Joseph Morrissey all provided affidavits attesting to Rose's improvements. Rose's application was approved on 23 June 1909 and Patent 72221 was granted on 15 July 1909. By 1910, Rose owned and lived in a mortgaged house on Pipestone Avenue in Flandreau, South Dakota. She and John McCarthy continued to live in that house after their marriage.

Rose, 85, died on a Monday in the Flandreau Municipal Hospital after a ten-day stay. She was survived by her husband, two step-children, two sisters, and two brothers. Her funeral was held on Friday at Saints Simon & Jude with the Rev's. George Kelly and Lewis Miller of Colman officiating. Pall bearers were Richard Fadgen, B. J. Tighe, Frank Corcoran, George Nichols, Everett Keck, and Henry Russell.

Biography* Ella M. Sweeney Dobbs, 1888-1964:
Born in South Dakota to a father born in Wisconsin and a mother born in New York, Ella resided her entire life in Moody and Brookings Counties, South Dakota. In early 1910, at age 22, Ella was living with her parents on the farm in Colman and working as a public school teacher. In July of that year, she was married to Charles Dobbs at St. Michaels in Colman by M. J. Martyn of Saints Simon & Jude in Flandreau. James Dobbs and Ellen McCullion were the witnesses. After the marriage, Ella and Charles lived in Fremont township, Moody County. By 1945, she and her husband Charles moved to Brookings.

Ella, 75, of 617 Ninth Ave, Brookings, died on a Tuesday at Saint Mary's hospital in Rochester, Minnesota after an 11-day stay. Cause of death was uremia and, nephrolithiasis. An autopsy was performed. Ella was attended by physician R. C. Bahn of the Mayo Clinic. The body was removed to Brookings on 8 January. Ella was survived by her husband Charles, three sons, two daughters, fourteen grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. The funeral was held on Friday at Saint Thomas More in Brookings with the Rev. John J. McEneaney officiating. The Vine Funeral Home served the family in Rochester.

In 1920, he was renting. By 1930, he owned his own place. Later, he moved to Brookings, South Dakota.

Charles, 83, died at the Madison Community Hospital after a brief illness. His funeral was held on Monday at Saint Thomas More in Brookings with Msgr. J. J. McEneaney officiating. He was survived by three sons, two daughters, 14 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, one sister, and one brother.
