Biography* | Martin F. Campion, 1895-1983: Born and raised on a farm in Eyota township owned by his parents, Martin was the youngest of four sons. Both parents, his father Lott and his mother Mary, were first generation Irish-Americans born in Minnesota. Martin attended Rochester High School graduating in 1914. He registered for the World War I draft in 1917 and was described as being of medium height and build with blue eyes and light hair. Martin signed the registration on the 5th of June. He entered the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and in 1919 joined Company Two of the Reserve Officers Traininbg Corps (ROTC) as a Private. In 1920 Martin was boarding at 525 10th Avenue SE in Minneapolis. Martin belonged to no clubs, organizations nor fraternities, other than the ROTC, while in university. In 1921, he graduated and that August opened his practice in Lake City. Fifty-six years later, Martin retired on 12 December 1977. He married Mary Tuohy in 1922 and by 1930 they owned a house valued at $4,300 at 418 Lyon in the 2nd ward of Lake City. In 1942, Martin, 47, registered for the World War II draft. He was described as being 5 feet-11 inches tall and weighing 164 pounds with brown hair and a ruddy complexion. Martin signed the registration on April 22nd. He was a life member of the American Dental Association, past grand knight of the Knights of Columbus, past president of the Lake City Hospital Board, founder and past president of the Lake City Country Club, a member of the Lake City American Legion Post 110 and the Lake City Chamber of Commerce, and a trustee of Saint Mary's parish. Martin, 88, a resident of 1374 West Broadway, Winona died on a Thursday at Saint Anne's hospice. He had been a resident of the Broadway address for five-years. Cause of death was pneumonia, urinary tract infection (1-week), arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, left cerebral infarction in 1977 and carcinoma of prostate. Martin was attended by physician Horace J. Anderson (MD) of 420 East Sarnia, Winona since 01 September 1981. Martin was survived by two sons, two daughters, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. His wife, parents and three brothers preceded him. The funeral was held at Saint Mary's Catholic church in Lake City on Sunday with the Rev Richard Engels officiating. Memorials to Saint Ann's hospice or to Saint Mary's hospital, Lake City, were preferred. Anderson Funeral Chapel, Lake City, was in charge. |
