Biography* | Walter John Delaney, 1895-1986: NOTE: Walter consistently lists his birth year as 1895 through 1934. Beginning in 1935, he just as consistently lists his birth year as 1901. Why he suddenly made himself six-years-younger is unknown. Walter, a first generation Irish-American, was the third of seven children and the second of three sons. His father Dennis immigrated in 1885 became a citizen and worked as a bar tender. His mother Elizabeth Dillon immigrated several years earlier and became a cook after 1905. In 1900 the family was renting at 1923 Reed Street in the 36th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The father Dennis died in 1905 of typhoid pneumonia. The family was living at 1531 South 22nd at the time. By 1910, three of the seven children had died. Elizabeth and the four living children were renting at 1910 South Reed Street in the 30th ward. Walter, age 14, was working as an errand boy at a store. In 1917 he registered for the World War I draft. The family was living at 5311 Addison Street. Walter, an unemployed painter, was of medium height and weight with gray eyes and brown hair. The registration was signed Walter John Delaney on the 5th of June. On the 26th of the following February, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Walter, serial number 1809566, was assigned to the 152nd Depot Brigade at Camp Meade, Maryland until April. Then he was transferred to the 304th Trench-Mortar Battery of the 79th Division stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey. PFC Walter Delaney's unit, and many others, sailed from Hoboken, New Jersey on the 14th of July aboard the SS Haverford bound for France as part of the American Expeditionary Force (A.E.F.). Walter's unit returned from Saint Nazaire, France on the SS Manchuria on 13 March 1919. He was honorably discharged on the 8th of April at Fort Dix. On 21 February 1934, Walter, a resident of 1008½ Franklin Street in Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida with no wife and no children, applied for Pennsylvania Veteran's Compensation and received $10/month for 13 months, a total of $130. At that time he was working as a shipping clerk for Bruce's Juices Inc. In May of that year Walter was married to Dorothy Brown in Tampa by E. C. Nance before John F Vaughan and Guy Whitley. The following year he and Dorothy were renting at 2212 Ola in Tampa and Walter with a college education was working as Assistant Manager in a bank. That September a son, Walter John jr, was born to them at Saint Joseph's hospital. In 1936, they lived at 909 24th Avenue. In 1939, Walter and Dorothy were divorced in Hillsborough County, Florida. In November of that year, he married Olive Ryan in Brownsville, Texas. In 1942, Walter registered for the World War II draft. They lived at 214 South Delaware Avenue in Tampa and did not have a telephone. Walter was again working for Bruce's Juices at Caesar & Cumberland in Tampa. He was 5.ft/6.in tall, weighed 172.lbs, with blue eyes, brown hair and a light complexion. Walter had a scar on his left eyebrow and a scar on the 1st finger of his left hand. The registration was signed W. J. Delaney on February 16th. By 1945 the family, Walter, Olive and Walter jr were living in the 12th preciinct of Winter Haven, Polk County, Florida. Walter was employed as a manager for the county. When he retired circa 1970, Walter was a Sales Manager for Snively Groves one the largest citrus growers in the state of Florida. He was also a former member Winter Haven Elks Lodge 1672. Walter, 90, died on a Thursday. He was survived by wife Olive S., son Lieutenant Colonel Walter J. Delaney Jr. of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, daughter Patricia McAuliffe of Lakeland, sister Elizabeth D. of Spring House, Pennsylvania and four-grandchildren. Crisp-Coon Funeral Home was in charge. Biography* | Gladys M. Robison Ryan Immel, 1912-1992: Gladys was the elder of two children and the only daughter. Her father William was born in Ohio, her mother Ada in West Virginia. In 1920, the family was renting at 283 Nort Third in Cuyahoga Falls Village, Summit County, Ohio. Her father Wiliam was a foreman in a mcahine shop. In 1930, they were renting at 510 Clark Street, in Willard Village, Huron County for $20/month. William was now a meat cutter in the local Kroger Store. Gladys, age 18, married 50-year old widower James Ryan with her parent's cosent. Gladys and James were divorced several years later. Then she married George Franklin Immel. In 1940, Gladys, George and their son were living with her parents at 288 Wayne Street in the 5th ward of Mansfield in Richland County. George worked 50-hours the week-ending 30 March as a truck driver for a fruit company. He died in 1963. Gladys, 80, died on a Tuesday at an unknown place possibly in West Virginia. The Social Security Administration listed her last residence as Jane Lew, Lewis County, West Virginia. And her son lived in Lewis County in the 1990s. |
