Biography* | James J. McDonald, 1894-1981: James was one of ten born to a first generation Irish-American father born in New York and a mother who was born either in Ireland or New York. In 1900, nine of the ten children were living and James was the seventh born of these nine and the youngest of four sons. His father John was working in a hotel and the family was living in a house they owned at 42 South Front Street in the 1st ward of Hudson, Columbia County, New York. James' mother Julia died circa 1902 and circa 1904 the father married Mary who had one child by a previous marriage. In 1910, the father John was proprietor of a restaurant. The wife Mary and four of the children worked in the restaurant. James worked as a clerk in a grocery store. In 1916, James married Jennie McCarthy and they had a son two years later. Wife Jennie and the son both died the following year. By 1920, James was renting at 507 Prospect Street in the fifth ward and working as a quarry foreman at a cement mill. Two of his siblings lived with him. James married again circa 1922 and had three more children with his second wife Florence. James, 87, died in 1981. |
