Biography* | Jane A. "Jennie" Higgins McCarthy, 1868-1914: Jane was living with her parents in Hudson's 2nd ward in 1875. In 1880, she was living with saloon keeper Walter Coon at 42 South West in Hudson's 1st ward and her parents were not listed. By 1900, Jane had given birth to six children and one of whom had died. In 1905, widowed, she was living at 24 Diamond in Hudson's 2nd ward with her five children. By 1910, she was listed at 234 Warren Street in the same ward. Jane, 46, died on a Saturday at her home on Warren Street. She was survived by one son, four daughters, four sisters, and three brothers. Her funeral was held on Tuesday from the residence and then from Saint Mary's. |

Biography* | Patrick James "P. J." McCarthy, 1887-1929: After leaving school, Patrick took required courses in embalming and opened an undertaker's parlor. In 1909, he ran unopposed as a Republican candidate for an alderman's seat on the Common Council for the second ward. On Monday 04 May 1914, Patrick was in a very serious automobile accident. One of his legs had to be amputated because of the injuries suffered. As a result, Patrick gave up most of his business affairs. Patrick was very active in the firefighting arena. He served as secretary of the Hudson Valley Association at one time and had served for years as secretary of Washington Hose Co. 3 in Hudson. Patrick lived at various addresses in Hudson during his life time. In 1905, he was at 24 Diamond in the 2nd Ward. In 1909, his residence was at 206 Diamond Street in the 2nd Ward and his place of business was at 234 Warren Street also in the 2nd Ward. In 1910, 1915, and 1920, his residence was listed as the Warren Street address. In 1925, he was at 30 Union in the 1st Ward. And finally, in 1929, at 10 Warren in the 2nd Ward. Patrick died on a Thursday on his 42nd birthday and was survived by his wife, one daughter, and three sisters. |

Biography* | Kathryn McCarthy McDonald, 1889-1966: Kathryn was the second of five children and the oldest of four girls. The family spent some of Kathryn's pre-teen years in Syracuse, New York where they rented at 104 Wolf Street. By 1910, the fatherless family was renting an apartment in a triplex at 234 Warren Street in Hudson. In 1917, Kathryn her husband William and their three children were living at 225 Warren Street. By 1930, she and William owned a $4,000 house at 432 Warren Street in the 4th ward. At one time she was president of McDonald's Funeral Home, Inc. on Columbia Street, a company operated by her husband William. A resident of 11 Aitken Avenue, Kathryn, 77, died on a Wednesday after a long illness. She was survived by two sons, six daughters, 28 grandchildren, and one sister. Funeral services were held on Saturday from the McDonald Funeral Home and then from Saint Mary's. |

Biography* | Jane C. "Jennie" McCarthy McDonald, 1891-1919: The third of five children and the second daughter, Jennie was 10-years-old when her father died. She was employed for a time at the Bell Telephone Company. Also, Jennie often assisted her brother in the direction of funerals, being exceptionally well qualified by study and nature for the work. She was an active member of Saint Mary's and belonged to the Rosary Society. Following the birth of her son, Jennie was stricken with influenza and never recovered from the effects of this illness. She died at her home at 234 Warren on a Friday at age 27. Jennie was survived by her husband James, infant son, one brother, and three sisters. [Note: Jennie's infant son died less than 5-months after his mother.] |

Biography* | Mary E. "Bessie" McCarthy Weinman, 1894-1974: Christened Mary Elizabeth, she was sometimes referred to as Elizabeth or "Bessie". Mary lived some of her early years with her family at 104 Wolf Street in Syracuse, New York. Her father James died in 1901 - the family had moved back to Hudson before he died - and in 1910 Mary, her widowed mother Jane and Mary's siblings were renting at 234 Warren Street. Mary completed 3-years of high school. Her mother died in 1914 and by 1915, Mary was working as an operator for the telephone company. In 1925, she was living with her brother-in-law and sister, William and Catherine McDonald, at 432 Warren Street. By 1930, Mary was living with her brother-in-law and sister, George and Marguerite Weinman, at 334 Warren Street. By 1935, the Weinmans had moved to 446 East Allen but Mary apparently was not with them. She rejoined the Weinmans by 1940 and had, by that time, risen to Chief Operator in the telephone company. In 1939, Mary worked for 49-weeks, earned $2,200 and had other income. Mary's sister Marguerite Weinman died in 1941 and Mary subsequently married Marguerite's husband George. Mary, 80, died on a Friday and was survived by three step-children and 14 step-grandchildren. Her funeral was held on Tuesday from the McDonald Funeral Home and then from Saint Mary's where the Rev. William Furlan officiated. |

Biography* | Marguerite McCarthy Weinman, 1900-1941: Born in Syracuse, Marguerite came to Hudson shortly after and remained there the rest of her life. In 1910, she and her siblings lived with their widowed mother Jane - her father James died in 1901 - at 234 Warren Street in Hudson. Marguerite was educated at Saint Mary's Academy and completed two-years of high school, her education probably shortened by the death of her mother Jane in 1914. By 1920, still living at 234 Warren with her brother Patrick and his wife, Marguerite was working as an operator at the telephone company. Married in 1921, by 1930, she and her husband George Weinman were renting at 334 Warren Street (a duplex). By 1935, they had moved to 446 Allen Street. In early 1941, few months before her death, Marguerite and her husband George purchased the Fred J. Longley dwelling at 461 East Allen Street. She was a devout member of Saint Mary's parish, belonged to the Rosary society of the church and was also a member of Court Columbia, No. 248, Catholic Daughters of America. Marguerite, 41, became ill at the end of May in 1941. She was sick for about a week and was thought to be recovering. Suddenly, on a Friday, she was seized with a fatal embolism and died at her home within a half hour. Marguerite was survived by her husband, one daughter, three sons, and two sisters. Funeral services were held on Monday from her home and then from Saint Mary's. |

Biography* | Marguerite "Rittie" Metz McCarthy, 1887-1975: Rittie, the youngest of three daughters, was a first generation German-American. Her father Valentine, a day laborer, immigrated in 1866. Rittie's mother Elizabeth immigrated in 1883. In 1900, the family was renting in a duplex at 519 State Street in the 5th ward of Hudson, Columbia County, New York. In 1910, Rittie was living with her widowed mother Elizabeth in Hudson's 4th ward. In 1920, Rittie, her husband Patrick and two of his sisters, were renting in a triplex at 234 Warren Street in the 2nd ward. Rittie's husband P.J. died in 1929 and in 1930, Rittie and her daughter were renting, for $20/month, in a triplex at 10 Warren Street. Rittie was working as a finisher in a woolen mill. In 1940, they were renting for $13/month in a duplex at 233 Warren Street in the 1st ward. In 1939, Rittie, with an 8th-grade education, was a machine operator in the woolen mill. She worked for 41-weeks, earned $510 and had no other income. [NOTE: paying rent of $13/month and earning $510 for the year, 30% of Rittie's earnings were spent on housing.] Rittie, 87, died on a Tuesday at Columbia Memorial Hospital. She was survived by two granddaughters, and one great-granddaughter. Funeral services were held on Friday from Richards Funeral Home and then from Saint Mary's. |

In 1917, when William registered for the WWI draft, he was living at 225 Warren Street and working as an undertaker at McCarthy & McDonald in Hudson. William was described as being of medium height and build with brown eyes and black hair. William requested an exemption from the draft because he was the sole support of his wife and three children. By 1930, he and wife Kathryn owned their $4,000 home at 432 Warren Street. William, 63, died on a Thursday. His funeral was held on Saturday from the McDonald Funeral Home and then from Saint Mary's. |

Biography* | George J. Weinman, 1900-1971: George was a first generation German-American, his father Robert, born in Germany, immigrated in1881. The father Robert was an electrician for an electric railroad company. In 1920, the family was renting at 505 Prospect Street in the 5th ward. George was working as a machinist in a boat-hoist factory. They also lived at 532 State Street for a time. Raised in the Methodist faith, he converted to Catholicism at the age of eighteen. Two years later, George, who completed two-years of high school, married Marguerite McCarthy. Afterwards, they lived at 507 Prospect and in 1930 were renting a half-duplex at 334 Warren Street in the 4th ward for $30/month. George was an assistant engineer with the power company. In 1940 they were renting at 446 East Allen in the 3rd ward for $35/month. George was an electric superintendant for the utilities. In 1939, he worked 52-weeks, earned $3,180 and had other income. In 1941, he was supervisor of the third ward of Hudson. His wife Marguerite died in that year and later George married her sister Mary. At the time of his death, George was living in the Hudson Garden Apartments on Stephen Court. George, 70, died on a Thursday at Columbia Memorial Hospital. He was survived by his second wife Mary, two sons, one daughter, and 13 grandchildren. His funeral was held on Monday from McDonald's Funeral Home and then from Saint Mary's. |
