Biography* | George Leo Cody, 1903-1985: Christened George Leo at Saint James on 2 August 1903 by Pastor E. A. Casey with sponsors Edward C. Cody (his 14-year-old brother?) and Mary Cody (who is this? his 11-year-old sister?). George was living in this parish at least until 1942 when his son William was confirmed into the Catholic church. He was living with his parents at both 1823 Childress Avenue, where he was born, and 6252 Famous Avenue, both in Saint Louis' 24th ward, at least until 1920. By 1929, he was living with his sister at 6453 Lloyd Avenue also in the 24th ward. He continued to live there after his marriage and in Saint James parish his entire life. George operated a "Plumbing Shop on Wheels" out of his house. He was a member of Plumbers local 35, A. F. of L. (American Federation of Labor). George died on a Sunday at age 82. He was survived by his wife, three children and 13 grandchildren. A memorial mass was celebrated at Saint James the Greater, Tamm and Wade Avenues, on Saturday. George's body was donated to Saint Louis University Medical school. In lieu of flowers, masses were preferred or contributions to the Jesuit Seminary Aid Assn. Ortmann's Funeral Home was in charge. |

Biography* | Catherine M. B. Cody Smith, 1908-1967 : Christened Catherine Marian (or Mariam) Bernadette Cody on 6 September 1908 by John T. Sesnon with sponsors John P. Fitzgerald (her mother's brother?) and Mrs Anna Guthrie (her father's sister). The family lived at 5240A Paulson Place. Two weeks before Catherine's 6th birthday in 1914 her mother died. By 1920, she and her widowed father lived with her aunt Anna Guthrie at 3945 Castleman Avenue. In 1933 she was married to Walter Smith by the Rev. T. V. O'Rielly. In 1945 was the informant listed on the death cert of her aunt Anna Guthrie. At that time Catherine (Mrs Walter Smith) was living at 1463 Drayton Lane, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1948, was the informant listed on her father's death cert. At that time Catherine (Mrs. W. W. Smith) was living in Malverne, New York. |

Biography* | Challen M. White Cody, 1904-1987: At least until after her 1930 marriage, Challen was called Margaret. Her father John was born in Missouri to a father born in England and a mother born in Ohio. Challen's mother Eleanor was born in Missouri to a father born in New York and a mother born in Pennsylvania. In 1910, the family was renting at 3939a Labadie Avenue in St. Louis 21st ward. Challen's father was a traveling salesman. In 1920, the family owned a mortgaged home at 5780 DeGiverville Avenue in the 28th ward. Challen's father was a metalware salesman. In 1930, Challen was married to George Cody at (Most) Blessed Sacrament by the Rev Geo. A. Rider before witnesses Charles Gallaher and Genevieve White. Challen, 82, died on a Saturday. She was survived by one daughter, two sons, 13 grandchildren, one sister, and a sister-in-law. The funeral was held on Tuesday from Saint James at Tamm and Wade Avenues. Challen was buried with her husband's parents and grandparents. Jay B. Smith funeral home of 7456 Manchester Avenue was in charge. |

Biography* | Orlando F. Guthrie, 1841-1901: Born in Kentucky to parents also born in that state, Orlando fought on the side of the south during the uncivil war. He served as a lieutenant in the 1st Missouri Cavalry; in Company B, 3rd Battalion, Missouri volunteer Cavalry, and; in Company H of Gates' Regiment, Cockrells Brigade. Later, Orlando served in the Spanish-American war in Light Battery A of the 6th Regiment Missouri volunteer infantry. He was living in Saint Louis at the time of his 1894 marriage to Annie Cody. In 1900 they were living at 2648 Ann Avenue in the 12th ward. Orlando worked as a traveling salesman. Orlando, 59, died on a Monday. The Major strained himself two years ago during exercises at Ft. Leavenworth, never recovered, and that injury caused his death. The funeral was Wednesday from father-in-law's residence at 2648 Ann Avenue. There was a private service officiated by J. G. Givens, of Lexington, who was chaplain of 6th MO volunteers. After the service the Masons will take charge until borne to Jefferson Barracks and interred in the National Cemetery. |
