Biography* | Benjamin M. Cody, 1870-1948: Benjamin Cody was the first member of this Edward Cody family found with a connection to the Annsgrove Codys. He was witness to the marriage of Michael Cody and Johanna Broaders in 1898. Research into Benjamin's family led to the conclusion that Benjamin's father and Michael's father may have been brothers. This was later proven from church records when the family was found in Mullinahone parish, County Tipperary. In 1900, Benjamin was working as a bookkeeper and living with his parents at 2648 Ann Avenue in Saint Louis' 12th ward. By 1909, he and wife Margaret were living at 5240A Paulian Place with his in-laws the Fitzgeralds. By 1914, Benjamin Cody was vice-president of the Marcell Real Estate & Investment Company at 5373 Wells Avenue and was living at 5334 Wells. His wife Margaret died in that year. In 1916, he was working as a cashier and living at 2650 Ann Avenue. By 1918, he was employed as a bookkeeper and living with his sister at 3945 Castleman Avenue. He remained with his sister at the same address while in 1920 he was bookkeeper at a packing company. By 1930, he was employed as a cashier at a livestock company. Benjamin, age 76, died on a Sunday. He was survived by one daughter. The funeral was held on Wednesday. Lawrence Mullen & Sons funeral parlors, 5165 Delmar Blvd, was in charge of arrangements. Benjamin was buried with his wife in her parent's plot. |

Biography* | Edward Cody, 1829-1907: Had always wondered why Michael Cody, the first of the Annesgrove Codys to immigrate to the U.S.A., chose to settle in Missouri. Although somebody has to be the first, and maybe Michael was, why did he choose Missouri? The church record of Michael's 1898 marriage to Johanna Broaders provided a clue. In this record, one of the witnesses to the marriage was listed as Benjamin Cody. Who could this be? Had never uncovered a Benjamin Cody connected to this family, until now. Intrigued by this, some time was spent researching Benjamin Cody and his family. Eventually was able to confirm that Benjamin's father Edward Cody and Annesgrove Patrick were brothers. So - Michael Cody, son of Annesgrove Patrick, settled in the Saint Louis parish of his uncle Edward. Edward Cody, christened Edm'd Cody, immigrated to the U.S.A. circa 1849 eventually settling in Madison County, Illinois. There, circa 1855, he married Margaret McMahan. After their marriage, Edward and Margaret moved to Clark County, Missouri where three children were born - John, Anna, and Edward. Their fourth, James, was born in Saint Louis, their fifth, Benjamin, was born in Peoria, Illinois. After Benjamin was born, the family returned to Saint Louis in the early 1870s, where the sixth, and last that we know about, was born - Netta. The family remained in Saint Louis. Some members of this family are buried in Calvary Cemetery, including at least, Edward himself, wife Margaret and children Edward, Anna, Benjamin and Netta. In 1860, Edward was working as a laborer. By 1870, he had been naturalized (i.e., became a U.S. citizen) and was working as a mechanic for a boiler maker. The family was living in the 6th ward of Peoria, Illinois. In 1880, he was working as a watchman and living at 2206 Papin Street in St Louis. By 1900, Edward was retired and living in a mortgaged home at 2648 Ann Avenue in St. Louis' 12th ward. Edward died on a Thursday in his 79th year. He was survived by his wife and four of his children. The funeral was held on Saturday from the residence followed by services at Saint Kevin's church. Burial Calvary. Omit flowers. |
