Biography* | | George Matthew Coskey, 1897-1967: A first-generation Lithuanian/German-American George was the middle child of three and the oldest of two sons. His father Matthew immigrated circa 1880 and his mother Martha circa 1888. In 1900, the family was renting an apartment in a duplex at 84 Orange Street in Worcester. The father Mathew was working as a waiter. The mother Martha had died by 1910. The family was farming and living in a house owned with mortgage on Main Street in Holden. George, 21, registered for the World War I draft in 1918. He was described as being of medium height and build with blue eyes and brown hair. George was working for his farmer father and listed his father's birthplace as Poland. He signed the registration on June 5th as George Matthew Coskey. With an 8th grade education, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, with the rank of Private, on September 3rd, 1918 and served in the Medical Department until he was discharged on June 24th, 1919. George married Mary Leonard circa 1923 and by 1930 they were renting, for $12/month, on South Main Street in Holden. They had a radio. George was working as a meter reader for the gas company. In 1939, he worked 52-weeks for the gas company as a meter installer and earned wages of $1,092. In 1940, the family lived on Wachusett Street in Holden for $25/month. George, 44, registered for the World War II draft in 1842. He was 5'-9'' tall, weighed 140 pounds, had blue eyes, brown hair and a light complexion. He signed the registration on February 14th as George M. Coskey. Circa 1960, George and Mary moved to 373 Walter Avenue in Frostproof, Polk County, Florida. George, 70, died in Avon Park, Highlands County, Florida on a Monday. Surved by widow Mrs Mary Coskey, daughter Miss Barbara Coskey of Miami and sister Mrs Anthony Zolloli of Holden, Massachusetts.
