| Biography* | Katherine H. "Kitty" Ryan, 1873-1956: In her obituary and death record, Kitty's birthplace is listed as the Village of Lanesboro in Fillmore County, Minnesota. Although her birth is not recorded in Fillmore County records - and neither is that of any of her siblings - she probably was born on the Ryan farm in Carrolton Township [Lanesboro is in, at least partly, Carrolton township]. About 1878, when Kitty was five-years-old, the family moved to Grant township in Sioux County, Iowa. By 1895, she had become a teacher and at her 1900 marriage was employed as a "school marm" in Sheldon, Sioux County, Iowa. After her marriage, she and Dan took a honeymoon trip to Sioux City, Omaha, and other places "out west" and then returned to live in Rock Rapids, Lyon County, Iowa. (Lyon County is the next county north of Sioux County.) About 1914, Kitty and family moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota where she lived the rest of her life. Kitty transferred the house at 109 South Walts, Sioux Falls, South Dakota to her three sons in July 1942. The boys sold it in Jun 1956 two months after Kitty's death. Kitty died at home unexpectedly of mesenteric thrombosis and coronary heart disease. She was 82. Kitty was survived by: three sons; Waldo of Sioux Falls, John of San Francisco and Duane of Memphis, four sisters; Mrs. Ed Maher and Nell Ryan both of Plankinton, Mrs. W. F. Walker of Minneapolis and Mrs. Ed McHugh of Watertown, South Dakota and nine grandchildren. Funeral services were held at St.Joseph's Cathedral on Tuesday. She was buried in lot 75/section 3/grave 1 next to her husband. |
