Biography* Margaret McCabe Ryan, 1845-1906:
The fourth of nine children, Margaret was born while the family was living on a farm in Hartland Township, McHenry County, Illinois. Although there is no direct evidence that this is her place of birth, it is likely that it happened there. In the spring of 1856, the family moved to a farm in Fountain Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota. There she would pass her teenage years acquiring the knowledge and skills of a farm wife before her marriage to Thomas Ryan in 1868.

Some time after her father's estate was settled in August 1874, her only living brother, Matthew, moved to Sioux County, Iowa. Margaret, her husband Thomas, and their children followed. On 20 September 1877, Margaret purchased an 80 acre farm in Section 18 of Grant Township in Sioux County, Iowa from Isaac and Hannah Wolf for $600. Twenty-three years and four months later, on 14 January 1901, this farm, plus the adjoining 80 acre farm purchased by son William in 1894, were sold to B. H. Rensink for $6,800.

On 23 March 1901, Margaret purchased half of a 160 acre farm in Section 1 of Jasper Township in Hanson County, South Dakota from Amy and J. Renkin for $1,250. In addition, she assumed responsibilty for $400 of an existing $800 mortgage on the property. On the same date, her son William purchased the other half of the farm and assumed the other half of the mortgage. Margaret, Thomas, and the four children still at home - William, "Nell," Thomas, and "Nonie" - moved onto the farm in the same month.

A year or two after moving to South Dakota, Margaret developed heart disease. Two or three years later, two months after the death of her husband Thomas, Margaret, 60, died suddenly, at home, of heart disease and gastric catarrh. Most sources profess that Margaret bore eight children, seven of whom were living at the time of her death. There is evidence Margaret actually bore nine. A child was born in 1874 that lived less than a year. If this child, named Maggie, was really born to Thomas and Margaret, she was their fifth. Margaret was buried in Saint Peter's Cemetery alongside husband, Thomas.
