Biography* | William Thomas Walker, 1889-1959: William grew up on a farm in Lynn township, Sioux County, Iowa. He received an 8th grade education. Circa 1908, the family moved to a farm in Great Bend township, Cottonwood County, Minnesota. William registered for the WWI draft in 1917. He was described as a self-employed farmer with a wife and child. William was a short man of medium build with blue eyes and dark brown hair. In 1920, he was renting a farm in Great Bend township. Circa 1923, William began working as an insurance agent for Woodman Accident Insrance Company in Lincoln, Nebraska. His assigned territory included Cottonwood, Jackson, Noble & Murray Counties. By 1930, William and Phoebe owned their $3,000 house at 1548 Second Avenue, Windom, Cottonwood County. In 1940, they owned a $2,200 house at 1535 3rd Avenue in the 2nd ward of Windom. In 1939, William worked 52-weeks and earned wages of $1,500. By 1942, they lived at 209 16th Street in Windom. In that year he registered for the World War II draft at age.52. William was 5ft-7in tall, weighed 182 pounds, had hazel eyes, gray hair and ruddy complxion. William was a charter member of the local Knights-of-Columbus and an active member of Saint Francis Xavier Catholic church and its Holy Name Society. William, 71, died at home on a Tuesday. Wife Phoebe was informant on the death cert. Cause of death was embolism (1-day) and thrombophlitis of femeral artery. He was survived by wife Phoebe, one son, his mother Mrs Anna Walker of Saint Louis Park, Minnesota, seven-grandchidlren, four-great-grandchildren, three sisters Mrs F. J. Cummiskey (Margaret) of Mankato, Mrs Gil Bugh (Evalyn) of Kalamazoo, Michigan and Mrs Ben (Kathryn) Koch of Saint Louis Park. William was preceded in death by his father and a brother Ray. The funeral was held on Friday at Saint Francis Xavier with the Rev Daly officiating. Pallbearers were Daniel Driscoll, William Bunkers, Howard Schwalbach, Bernard Kohler, Leonard Olson and Lloyd Jones. Out-of-town attnedees included M/M Alex Gonring of Milwaukee, Ernest Gratton of West Bend, Wisconsin, Mrs Floyd Benjamin of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, Mrs. F. J. Cummiskey of Mankato and M/M Ben Koch of Saint Louis Park. Hanson Funeral Chapel was in charge. |

Biography* | Margaret Ellen "Nell" Walker Cummiskey, 1888-1973: Margaret was the eldest of seven with three younger sisters. Called Nell as a child, she was usually referred to as Margaret by the time she married. Circa 1908, she moved, in company with her parents and siblings, from a farm in Sioux County, Iowa to a farm in Great Bend Township, Cottonwood County, Minnesota. Margaret was married in Windom at the Catholic Church by the Rev. Anthony Hennekes with William T. Walker, her brother, and Margaret E Cummiskey (groom's relation?), as witnesses. After their marriage Margaret and Francis rented in Lismore Village in Nobles County, Minnesota. By 1920, they owned a house there free of mortgage. By 1926, when her father died, they were living in Mankato, Blue Earth County. In 1930, they were renting at 925 North 8th Street in Mankato's 1st ward for $40/month. And by 1940 they owned a $2,800 house at 104 South Fourth in the 3rd ward. Margaret, 85, died on a Wednesday at the Saint Joseph's Home in Saint Cloud, Minnesota. She was survived by two daughters, three sons, sisters Mrs Kathryn Koch of Minneapolis and Mrs Evelyn Bugh of Kalmazoo, Michigan, 26 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Francis and two sons. The funeral was held on Saturday at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic church in Mankato. Landkamer Funeral Home was in charge. |
