Biography* | Mary Ryan Lynch, 1870-1900: Mary, the second of twelve and the second of seven daughters, moved from Fountain township in Fillmore County, Minnesota to Chicago, Illinois with her parents and siblings about 1886. In 1890 she was a sponsor at the christening of her nephew William Hayes at Saint Pius V Catholic church in Chicago. In 1895 Mary married Edward Lynch, also from Fillmore County, in the same church. Edward was ten-years older than Mary and lived in a different township but it seems likely that they knew each other in Minnesota. The marriage was performed by the Rev. J. W. Melody. Witnesses were Mary's sister Katherine Ryan and the man Katherine would later marry Patrick Fitzgerald. When Edward and Mary's first child Evelyn was born in 1896 they were living at 4356 Emerald Avenue. In 1898 when the second child Elizabeth was born they were living at 4539 Emerald Avenue. When their third child Edward was born they were living at 4440 Emerald Avenue. Mary, 29, died at home on a Saturday, 46-days after her third child Edward was born. A burial permit was issued by the health department on January 22nd. On 25 March 1900, the widower Edward Lynch bought lot 25, block 37, section Y in Calvary cemetery. Mary was buried in that lot on the 7th of April. Presumably Mary was buried soon after death and then reinterred on April 7th. |

Biography* | Katherine Ryan McDonald, 1874-1966: Born in Fillmore County, Minnesota, Katherine's family moved to Chicago, Cook County, Illinois in 1886. In 1900, she was living with her widowed father at 860 South Ashland in the 9th ward of Chicago and working as a bookkeeper. In 1903, Katherine married Patrick McDonald from New York at Pius V Catholic Church, 1919 South Ashland, Chicago. By 1910, Katherine was widowed, childless and living with her sister Josephine and husband Herbert Howard. On 4 September 1940, Katherine did a curious thing. She signed an affidavit for a delayed birth record in the presence of a Chicago Registrar, 179 North La Vergue Avenue, Chicago, attesting that she, Katherine Ryan, was born in Fountain, Minnesota on 16 May 1886! This is the same date and month of her actual birth but 12-years-later. Everything else in the affidavit is correct (or reasonably so), her parents ages (at the time of birth in 1874), her mother's given and maiden names, and which number child she was (the 3rd). Katherine's birth record still existed in Fillmore County so why did she need a delayed record? Was this just to make herself 12-years-younger? Katherine R. McDonald, 92, died at Lakeland, Florida. She was survived by her sisters Mrs John Moloney and Mrs Herbert Howard and predeceased by her husband Patrick J. McDonald. The Funeral was held on Friday at Saint Giles Catholic church. Katherine was buried in the Lynch family plot in Calvary with her father and other family members. Williams Funeral Home, 12 Lake Street, Oak Park was in charge. |

William's parents both immigrated from Ireland to Canada and were married there. Seven children were born to this union in Canada. In 1861 they were living in a log house in Ops township on Victoria County in Ontario, Canada. The following year the family immigrated to the state of Iowa in the USA. William spent his early years in McGregor, Clayton County, Iowa. In 1870 they were living on a farm in Fairview township in Allamakee County. The farm was valued at $3,000. In 1878 they moved to Sioux County to a farm in Sheridan township. In 1885 the family lived in Lynn township. In 1887, William married Anna Ryan in Sheldon, Iowa. Afterwards they farmed in Capel township and by 1900 in Lynn township on a farm they owned with mortgage. In 1908, they moved to Cottonwood County, Minnesota where they bought a farm in Great Bend township. Circa 1914, they retired from farming and moved into Windom Village into a house on Eighth Street. William went to work as a salesman for the Singer Sewing Machine Company. William, 61, died suddenly while sitting on the porch of the Emil Schopper farm house In Amboy township. He had left home about 4 p.m. in the company of W. F. Plaman, a salesman for Singer Sewing Machine Co of Mankato, for a short trip in the country. When they arrived at the Schopper farm, William sat on the porch while Mr Schopper and Mr Plaman conducted their business. In a few moments, almost unnoticed by those around him, William quietly passed away. The informant on the death cert was William's son Ray F. Walker6 of Tracy, Minnesota. Cause of death was acute heart failure (minutes) and chronic dilated cardiomyopathy (10yrs). He was attended by physician J. H. Dudley of Windom. William had been in failing health the last few years and about 3-years ago suffered a slight stroke. The previous winter a spot in his mouth became cancerous. William spent four months in Dr Seamen's Sanitorium at Cherokee, Iowa where he was successfully treated. William was survived by wife Anna, daughter Mrs F. J. Cummiskey, who was unable to attend the funeral due to illness, sons W. T. of Windom, Ray F. of Tracy, daughters Katheryn and Evalyn at home, one sister Sr. M. Magdalen of Bismarck, North Dakota and 7-grandchildren. A funeral service was held at Saint Francis Xavier in Windom with Rev. Hiltner officiating. Other relatives and friends from out-of-town who attended the funeral at Windom were: Mrs D. W. McCarthy and son D. W. jr of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Mr Will Ryan of Mitchell, South Dakota; Mrs Ed McHugh of Watertown, South Dakota; Mr F. J. Cummiskey and sons F. The remains were then transported to Sheldon, Iowa. The procession was met in route at Sanborn, Iowa by the Rev. McCormack and many relatives and friends from Sheldon who were unable to get to Windom because of washouts on the Omaha Rail Road. Graveside services at St. Patrick's were conducted by Rev McCormack. William was laid to rest beside his mother and father. Undertaker J. A. Crane of Windom was in charge of arrangements. |

- William invariably listed his birthplace as Iowa. After the children left home they all invariably listed their father's birthplace as Wisconsiin. Son Ray listed it as Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin on his father's death cert. That and two obits are the only sources that list Prairie Du Chien as William's place of birth. All of the many other sources for William list his birthplace as Iowa and several of those list McGregor, Iowa. It is curious that Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin is only about five miles from McGregor, Iowa just across the Mississippi River!

- No evidence of Edward's birth has been discovered in available Canadian records by either surname McHugh or McCue and no evidence has been discovered in the USA with those surnames until 1895
- According to family lore (source: Edward's daughter Margaret) the family owned and operated a hotel and saloon in this time period in Ocheyedan in Osceola County, about 30-miles from Sheldon.
- Had Edward's father died? And J. McGrath was his step-father? Had Edward changed his surname? Or was ths just a recording error? Reseach into the McGrath surname possibility has not proved fruitful. Interestingly one of his sister Ella's sons listed his mother as a McGrath. The puzzle persists.
- It is strange that Edward was buried in Sheldon. He lived in that area less than 20-years and the only known relatives buried there were his sister Ella's first husband Thomas Donlan and one of their sons. Later Edward's wife and their two sons were buried in Watertown.

Second, Iowa county birth records are available on-line beginning in 1880 and his sister Anna's (Johanna) birth is listed as 24 December 1880. There is no record in Iowa for [an Edward Maher having been born in either 1880 or 1881[:CIT]. In 1880, the family was farming in Clay township, Shelby County, Iowa. In 1895, Edward having completed his 8th grade education, this Maher family was farming in Oakland township, Audubon County, Iowa. Then they moved to Nebraska where Edward's father Bernard died in 1897 and is buried. In 1900, the widow Johanna was operating a rented farm in Martin township, Hall County, Nebraska. Edward, an older brother and two younger sisters were with her. In 1902 this family of five moved to South Dakota and in 1905 were farming in Edgerton township, Hanson County. An older son had joined them the previous year. NOTE: We do not know why Johanna came to this place in South Dakota. There were no Kearneys or Mahers in the area that might have been an attraction. But it was a fortuitous choice nonetheless since son Edward undoubtedly met his future wife Nonie Ryan there. She lived in Jasper township which adjoins Edgerton. Edward was already resident in Plankinton, Aurora County, South Dakota at the time of his 1910 marriage having moved there in 1907. He and wife Nonie were listed as owners of a mortgaged farm in Firesteel township in Aurora County later that year. When Edward registered for the WWI draft in 1918, he was described as being short in height and of stout build with blue eyes, and black hair. He was a self-employed farmer residing at RFD-3, Plankinton. Edward, 46, died in a Mitchell, South Dakota hospital on a Monday. He had not been in good health for several years. Edward was brought to Mitchell for Appendicitis and an operation was performed on Saturday. On Sunday his stomach became paralyzed and he died the following day. Edward was survived by wife Nonie, brothers Daniel and Thomas of Dell Rapids, Minnehaha County, South Dakota, William of Woonsocket, Sanborn County, South Dakota, Henry of Aurora County and sisters Anna Maher, Mrs Mary (Arthur) Anderson and Mrs Nellie (Arthur) Brannigan also of Aurora County. Edward's mother Johanna, a resident of Plankinton, had died a little over 6-months previously. The funeral was held on Wednesday at the Catholic church in Plankinton. The Rev Slattery officiated assisted by Rev Kelley of Woonsocket and Rev Mahoney of Watertown, Coddington County, South Dakota. Funeral attendees from afar were M/M Thomas and Daniel Maher and families of Dell Rapids, M/M William Maher of Woonsocket, M/M William Ryan of Mitchell, Mrs Ed McHugh of Sioux Falls5, South Dakota and Mrs W. F. Walker of Windom, Minnesota. |
