Biography* John Harry Rippie, 1884-????:
A first generation German-American born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, John was living in Freeborn County, Minnesota at his 1906 marriage to Josephine Ryan. In 1918, when he registered for the WWI draft, John was temporarily residing on Grand Lake Boulevard in West Chicago, Du Page County, Illinois. His permanent address was 1520 Washington Avenue, Minneapolis, Minnesota. John was employed as a switchman on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad (C&NWRR), Galena Division and his nearest relative was listed as Lillie Rippie of the Minneapolis address. John was described as a tall man, of medium build with brown eyes and dark hair. In 1930, John, a widower, was rooming at 521 West Lyndhurst Avenue in the 11th ward of Saint Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota with the widow Louisa O'Brien.

The Northern Pacific Railway Company archives contain an enormous Personnel file on John of 278 images covering his career with the company which spans a period from about 1903 to 1920. In a Job Application for a position at the Tacoma, Washington Station, dated 13 November 1917, John lists his address as 1520 Washington Avenue North in Minneapolis. His wife Emma and daughter Margaret, age 11, are listed as well. This is the only evidence we have of Margaret Rippie since her birth and the death of her mother in 1907. The Railway archives, held at the Minnesota Historical Society, have been digitized and are available on Ancestry.com.

Biography* Margaret C. McGuire Ryan, 1886-1963:
The oldest of seven, Margaret grew up on a farm in Nunda township, Freeborn County, Minnesota. Her parents were first generation Irish-Americans. Her father Martin was born in Illinois, her mother Margaret in Minnesota. In 1910, daughter Margaret, with a college degree, was a school teacher in a county school and was boarding on the farm of Henry and Marla Wood in Bancroft township. Her 1911 marriage to William Ryan was performed by Daniel Coleman with witnesses William Kennelly and her sister Rose McGuire. In 1924, when her father died, she was living in Albert Lea as Mrs William C. Ryan and was employed by the George E Brett Company, later Wallaces Store. Soon after her father died in 1924, Margaret, who was estranged from husband William Ryan, moved to San Francisco, California. By 1926, she was self-employed providing electrolytic treatment9 at 166 Geary Street. In 1927 Margaret was living at 556 Jones Street10, an eight-minute walk from 166 Geary. By 1930, she was renting in the Duncan Apartments at 605 Jones for $45/month and was listed as married. Margaret's sister Irene was renting in the same building. By 1931, Margaret had expanded her business and now listed it as a beauty shop. In 1932, she married Robert Farley Morris, a bachelor civil engineer with a house at 630 Palmetto. Robert Morris died at home on 17 February 1935 of a heart attack and was buried in Cypress Lawn Memorial Gardens. In 1940 the house on Palmetto was valued at $2,500 and she was listed as Margaret Morris widow. That listing is the only place found after 1935 where Margaret is listed as Morris. She is always listed as Ryan. By 1943, when Margaret's mother died, a sister, Mrs Tom (Irene) Ireland, was also living in San Franciso and another sister, Mrs Milton Sevier, was living across the bay in Oakland. She retired in 1951 or soon after. In 1956, as Margaret C Ryan of 630 Palmetto, she ordered and paid $463.44 for the funeral of her first husband William Ryan and his burial in Holy Cross cemetery masoleum where she herself was eventually interred. William died in Santa Rosa, Sonoma County 50-miles from Margaret's house. What relationship, if any, she and William had in 1956 is unknown but it is interesting that she knew of his death and paid for his funeral and burial.

Margaret C. Ryan, 77, died on a Wednesday at Notre Dame Hospital, Broadway at Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco. Frank Solomen of 2166 Hayes was listed as her physician on the funeral record. Margaret was survived by a brother, Bernard McGuire; and seven sisters. Mrs. John Keily, Mrs. Milton Sevier. Mrs. J. C. Smith, Mrs. J. B. Shapker, Mrs. Thomas (Irene) Ireland, Mrs. Agatha Tellegen and Mrs. John M. (Rose) Patten. Services were held on Saturday at Saint Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, Junipera Serra at Brotherhood Drive in San Francisco. Carew & English Funeral Home at Masonic Avenue and Golden Gate Avenue was in charge. William Ryan was listed as her spouse on the funeral record. The informant on that record was her sister Rose Patten.
