Biography* | Margaret L Harrington Thornhill, 1918-1998: Margaret was the third of three children and the second daughter. Her father John was born in Iowa. Her mother Anna was a first generation Irish-American born in Minnesota. In 1920, the family lived in a mortgaged home on Hubbard Street in the 2nd ward of Carthage, Miner County, South Dakota. Margaret's father John died in 1921 and by 1928 the family had left Carthage and was renting a duplex apartment at 502 West 7th Street in the 11th ward of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In 1935 the family was living at 415 North Walts Avenue and Margaret was a student. The following year, they were living at 623 Minnesota Avenue and Margaret was working as a stenographer at Koplow Bros, Inc a wholesale liquor dealer at 243 East 8th Street. In 1940, listed as Peggy, Margaret was living with her mother Anna in a duplex-aprtment at 113½ North Main Avenue in the 1st ward and still working as a stenographer at the Koplow Bros. She worked 45-hours the week-ending 30 March. In 1939, Margaret worked 52-weeks and earned wages of $840. In August of 1940, Margaret was married to Karl Kolaas at Sioux Falls by Catholic priest P. C. Conway. Margaret's mother Anne had moved to Los Anfgeles earlier in the year. Karl died one-week after their 5th wedding anniversary in 1945. After her husband died, Margaret moved to Alaska with Karl's sister Joy Kolaas. There she met and married William Thornhill. Margaret and William had three children together. The first two were born in California. In 1954, the family moved to Washington where the third child was born. Margaret and William were divorced in 1957. Margaret, 79, a resident of Seattle, Kings County, Washington, died on a Monday. Biography* | James Harold Ely, 1911-1960: James was the middle child of three and the second of two sons. His father William a laborer and house painter was born in Iowa. His mother Anna was born in Kansas. James was born in Missouri and by 1920 the family was living in San Diego, California and renting at 2055 Franklin. By 1930 the family had moved to Los Angeles and was renting at 1802 West Jefferson Blvd for $25/month. In 1933, James, a bank clerk of 3112 South Hobart Blvd in Los Angeles, was married to Alice Ely, of 425½ West 53rd Street in Los Angeles, by Justice of the Peace Kenneth E Morrison before witnesses Virgil E Turnour of Walnut Park and Vivian B Kohler of Huntington Park. By 1937, James and Alice were living at 143 West 66th and James, with a high school education, was working as an accountant. In 1939, he worked for 52-weeks as a bookkeeper at the State Controllers office and earned $1,450 in wages. In 1940, they were renting at 605 West 49th Place for $25/month. By 1942, when James registered for the World War II draft, they were living at 629 West 69th. He was 5-feet/11½-inches tall, weighed 165-pounds, had blue eyes, blond hair, a light complexion and a slight scar across his nose. James listed his mother Mrs Anna Ely of 3106 South Hobart in Los Angeles as his contact. James, 49, died on a Wednesday. |
