Biography* | Francis James Cummiskey, 1882-1957: Francis was a first generation Irish-American. His father Philip emigrated Ireland in 1856. Francis' mother Margaret was first generation Irish-American herself. Philip came first to Philadelphia's 1st ward and then settled in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania where he worked on the railroad. In 1870, Philip lived in Millcreek township (Myerstown P.O.), was married with two children and had $200 of real estate and a personal estate valued at $100. In 1880, the family was living in Richland, Lebanon County and Philip was working as a repairman on the railroad. In March 1885, when Francis, the eighth of eleven, was three-years-old, the family moved to Shetek township, Murray County, Minnesota and commenced farming. Francis graduated from Saint Thomas College. He was a resident of Nobles County, Minnesota at the time of his 1909 marriage. When he registered for the WWI draft in 1918, Francis was a resident of Lismore, Minnesota and was employed as a banker at the Lismore Farm State Bank. He was described as being of medium height and build with light blue eyes and dark brown hair. In 1920, he and Margaret owned their home in Lismore free of mortgage and Francis was employed as a bank cashier. In 1925, they moved to Mankato where he became an insurance salesman with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company. In 1930, they were renting, for $40-per-month, at 925 North 8th Street in Mankato's 1st ward. And by 1940 they owned a $2,800 house at 104 South Fourth in the 3rd ward. Francis, 74, died on a Friday at Saint Joseph's hospital, Mankato. Cause of death was arteriosclerotic heart disease with cardiac decomposition (1-month), plus malignancy (type undetermined) of thoracic vertebrae with compression of spinal cord. An autopsy was performed. Franics was attended by physician John J. Custermann (MD) of Mankato. He was survived by his wife Margaret, four sons, two daughters, 18-grandchidlren and several nieces and nephews. The funeral was held on Monday at Saints Peter and Paul. Landkamer Funeral Home was in charge. |

Biography* | Ruth Clare Sullivan, 1912-1922: Ruth was the eldest of three children and the only daughter. She died at home, 717 North 3rd Avenuw West, on a Wednesday. She was nine-years-of-age. Cause of death was acute meningitis and bronchial pneumonia. The funeral was held on Saturday from Saint Patrick's officiated by the Rev. D. J. Lenihan. (Her death cert listed her burial date as Monday the 23rd) F. J. Manahan Funeral Home was in charge. |

Biography* | Robert William Sullivan, 1915-2001: Born and raised in Cedar Rapids, Robert was the middle child of three with an older sister and a younger brother. In 1937, he went to work as a clerk with the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad (Rock Island Road). In 1939, Robert worked 52-weeks and earned wages of $800. In 1940 he worked 44-hours the week-ending 30 March. Later that year he registered for the World War II draft. Robert was described as being 5-ft/5-in in height, weighing 145 pounds with hazel eyes, brown hair and a light complexion. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January of 1942 and was sent to the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. His father died in May of that year. And in July he married Josephine Scolaro at Cedar Rapids. While in the Navy, in addition to the Training Station, Robert was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Oak Harbor, Washington and the Naval Operating Base at Dutch Harbor in Alaska. He also spent over 19-months at sea aboard the USS Decker4. Robert was honorably discharged in September of 1945. In 1945, he and Josephine were living at 821 14th SE (SouthEast) in Cedar Rapids. In 1947, they were living 707 East Avenue NW (NorthWest) and in 1950 at 2321½ Mount Vernon Road SE. After his return from the Navy, Robert returned to work at the railroad until retiring in 1979. The following year he and Josephine moved to Hot Springs Village in Garland County, Arkansas. She died in 1998. Robert, 85, died on a Thursday. |

- USS Decker (DE-47) was an Evarts class destroyer escort constructed for the United States Navy during World War II. From 26 August 1943 – 26 April 1945, she gave vital support to operations in North Africa, Italy, and Southern France by guarding the passage of nine supply convoys to Casablanca, French Morocco; Bizerte, Tunisia; Palermo, Sicily; and Oran, Algeria. On 11 May 1944, at sea as part of the screen of UGS-40 bound for Tunisia, she aided in repelling a heavy torpedo attack by enemy planes. After overhaul at Charleston, South Carolina, Decker operated in the Florida Keys as a training vessel until the end of the war. Biography* | John Edward Sullivan, 1918-1995: John was the youngest of three and the second son. He was born in the family home at 717 North 3 Street West in Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa and delivered by Dr Gormen of Cedar Rapids. By 1930, his widowed father had bought a house at 1426 A Avenue West. John went to college at Iowa university, studied accounting and became a CPA (Certified Public Accountant). When his father died in May of 1942, John was living in Cedar Rapids. He enlisted in the U. S. Army on 17 November 1942 and served at - in order - M.P. detachment in Kansas City, Missouri; M.P. detachment in Saint Louis; 75th Station Hospital at Camp Ellis, Illinois and finally; the 9316 T S U Chicago org dist (don't know anything about this unit but his brother Robert described John's job as "closing out war contracts"). During this period, while John was in the Army and assigned to Chicago, he married Anastasia "Nancy" Werchovsky. John separated from the Army on 07 April 1946 as a Warrant Officer. He then attended night school at Loyola University and earned a law degree. John worked at the American Hospital Association and retired in 1980 as Vice President and Comptroller. While there he met Mildred Ryan, a second cousin, who was executive secretary to the AHA President. In 1949, he and Nancy lived at 4246 North Francisco Avenue. John was a model railroader. He and his wife Nancy raised Irish setters. John, 77, died on a Saturday. He was suvived by wife Anastasia "Nancy" and brother Robert W of Hot Springs, Arkansas. No services were held. The Rigdon-Ransom mortuary was in charge. Donations to the Humane Society were suggested. |
