Biography* | Anastasia "Nancy" Werchovsky Sullivan, 1925-2006: Nancy was a first generation Russian-American, the middle child of three with an older brother and younger sister. The brother was born in Russia and immigrated with the parents in 1925. Nancy's father Gleb was a priest in the Ukranian church. In 1930 the family was renting an apartment, for $38/month, in an owner-occupied duplex at 2437 Rice Street in the 34th ward of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. The father Gleb died in 1935 and in 1940 the widow Natalie and the three children were renting at 2309 South Cortez in the 31st ward for $35/month. The mother Natalie was working as a forelady in a laundry. In 1939, she earned $1,296 in wages. After high school Nancy attended Chicago Art Institute and became a kitchen designer for Marshall Fields. In the early 1960's she changed careers and became a realtor in Lake Forest, Illinois. Nancy raised pure bred Irish setters and won many awards at Westminster. She also was an excellent miniaturist and made porcelain dolls. In 1981 Nancy and husband John Sullivan moved to Salem, Oegon. He died in 1995. Nancy, of 1549 Kenard Street NW, died on a Tuesday, two-days before her 81st birthday. She was survived by sister Andronica Swanson of Banning, California; niece Karen Winterburn of Glenview, Illinois; niece Janet Bridge of Yonkers, New York; six-great nieces and nephews and best friend Bettye Gill of Dallas, Oregon. City View Funeral Home was in charge. |
