| Biography* | Richard Thomas "Dick" O'Kane, 1925-2004: Richard was the third of four sons born to James and Lucy (Burns) O'Kane. He grew up on a farm near Hospers, Floyd township, Sioux County, Iowa and graduated from Sheldon High School. Richard farmed with his father for a few years prior to his marriage to Lucille McCabe in 1948. Following their marriage the couple farmed in South Dakota and Iowa before moving to Le Mars in 1968. There Richard was employed with Wells' Blue Bunny as a semi-truck driver. Richard retired in 1990. He was a member of Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, where he had served on the parish council and as a Eucharistic Minister. Richard was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Trinity Council #1466 in Le Mars. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching spectator sports, especially if his grandchildren were involved. Richard, 78, of Le Mars died at home on a Tuesday following a lengthy illness. Survivors include his wife Lucille, six children, 15 grandchildren, a brother John O'Kane and his wife Dolly of New Ulm, Minnesota, a sister-in-law Frances O'Kane of Le Mars, and his faithful dog Bailey. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Bob O'Kane and his wife Lois, and Ray O'Kane. The funeral was be held on Saturday at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars with son Rev. Patrick O'Kane celebrating the Mass. Feuerstein Funeral Home of Le Mars was in charge. |
