Biography* Samuel J. Bonino, 1915-1972:
Samuel, or Salvatore, was a first generation Italian-American. He was the third child of his parents and the first son. In addition to two older sisters, Sam had two younger sisters and two younger brothers. There is evidence that one of the older sisters was born in Texas so his parents may have lived in Texas after they immigrated circa 1911. In 1930, the family owned a duplex at 26 South Park Street in Madison's 9th ward. Sam's father Carlo repaired shoes in a shoe shop. Sam completed three-years of high school and got married when he was 16-years-of-age. About 1937, at age 22, Sam went to work as a janitor in the Gay Building in Madison where he worked for the next 35-years, except for a hitch in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Sam eventually rose to building superintendent. In 1939, he worked for 52-weeks and earned $720. In 1940, the family was renting a6 2811 Monroe Street in Madison's 20th ward for $30/month. After the war, Sam moved to Verona.

Sam, 57, died at home on a Friday of an apparent heart attack. He was survived by his wife Lola, one son, two sisters, one brother and three grandchildren. The funeral was held on Monday from St. Andrew's Catholic church with burial in Roselawn Memorial Park, Madison. Joyce Verona Funeral Home was in charge.
