Biography* Patrick Francis McDonald, 1875-1904:
Not much is known about Patrick. Born in Ireland, he came to Chicago from New York City (Manhattan) by the mid 1890s and became friends with Edward Lynch. They may have met through work. Patrick was a horse buyer and Edward Lynch was a salesman at the Chicago stock Yards. In 1898, Patrick was a sponsor at the christening of the Lynch's second child and Patrick and the Lynchs were living at the same address 4539 Emerald Avenue. By 1900, Patrick was boarding with them at 4440 Emerald. In 1903 Patrick married Katherine Ryan, a sister of Edward Lynch's wife, at Saint Pius Catholic church. The marriage was officiated by the Rev. R. C. Conway, a Catholic priest, before witnesses Edward Lynch and Mamie McDonald (a relative?).

Patrick, 29, of 4942 Forrstville Avenue, died on a Saturday less than a year after his wedding. He was survived by his wife Katherine. The funeral was held at Corpus Christi Catholic church on Monday and then the remians were transported to the Lake Shore Depot, Van Buren Street. McInerney Bros undertakers were in charge. His remains were shipped to West Troy (now known as Watervliet) in Albany County, New York and buried in the Catholic cemetery there. In his Findgrave memorial, Patrick's mother was listed as Mrs James McDonald.

NOTE: Attempts to connect Patrick with Ireland born McDonalds living in Watervleit from 1892 until Patrick's death in 1904 have been unsuccessful. There are no memorials in Findagrave for any McDonalds living in the area during that period that are buried in that cemetery including a James McDonald and spouse.

In 1898, the Home was built at 56th Street and Ellis Avenue—the location of the Young Memorial Building today—to care for individuals in Cook County with conditions that were then deemed "incurable," including tuberculosis, rheumatism, paralysis, and locomotor ataxia (known today as tabes dorsalis). The Home accommodated 125 patients, who had access to lawns with shade trees and swinging hammocks, reading rooms, and a parlor on every floor. Patients were provided with wheelchairs, and male patients could go to a smoking room to "indulge to their hearts' content in the use of their favorite brands."(Excerpted from https://givetomedicine.uchicago.edu/donor-stories/…
