Biography* Edward J. Lynch, 1862-1940:
Edward was a first generation Irish-American. His parents were farmers. Edward was the second of five with one older brother and one younger sister. We have conflicting evidence on the amount of Edward's schooling. One source lists his education level as eighth grade; the other that he finished two-years of high school. Sometime after 1885, Edward left the home farm in Minnesota and made his way to Chicago in Cook County, Illinois. There, in 1895, he was married to Mary Ryan who was also from Fillmore County, Minnesota. And even though Edward was nine-years older than Mary and they lived in different townships in Fillmore County it seems likely that they knew each other in Minnesota. The marriage took place in Saint Pius V church and was performed by the Rev. J. W. Melody. In 1896 when their first child Evelyn was born, the family lived at 4356 Emerald Avenue. In 1896, Edward was working as a salesman in the stock yards and the family lived at 4336 Emerald Avenue. In 1898, when their second daughter Elizabeth was born they were living at 4539 Emerald Avenue. The third child, Edward, a son, was born early in December of 1899. Wife Mary died 46-days later in January 1900. The family was living at 4440 Emerald Avenue. By 1910, Edward owned a house, free of mortgage, at 5634 South Green Street in the 31st ward and was working as a horse buyer. A live-in servant was with the family. By 1920, the house had been arranged into a duplex and one half was being rented out. Edward was working as a live stock broker. In 1930 Edward was retired and still living at the Green Street house now valued at $7,500. His daughter Evelyn, her husband Frank McAuliff and their four children were living with him. By 1935, he had bought a house across the street at 5637 and was living in it. His daughter Evelyn and three of her children were living with him. Although the daughter was listed as married, the husband Frank McAuliff was not with the family. The duplex apartments at 5634 were rented. Who owned them is not known. In 1940, Edward was listed twice. In addition to haed of household at the Green Street address, he was also listed with his daughter Elizabeth Delores and her husband Rueben Edgren and their three children at 171 West 9th (King) Street in the 2nd ward of Winona, Minnesota.

Edward, 80 died on a Sunday at Cook County Hospital. He was buried in Section Y/block 37/lot 25 with his wife and father-in-law.

NOTE: The source for Edward's death lists his mother's name as Mary J. Lynch and his spouse's name as Catherine. Although this source is almost certainly correct for other facts listed such as birth date and place, death date and place, burial date and place, father's name, for mother's and spouse's names it is not correct.
