Biography* | Charles Irwin Haskins, 1900-1946: Charles was one of four children, and possibly the youngest, born to Ira Haskins and Elizabeth (Libby) Moss both born in Wisconsin. Charles was the only one of the four children who survived childhood. In 1900 Ira and Libby were renting at 119 Brown Street (a duplex) in the 1st ward of Steven's Point in Portage County, Wisconsin. Ira worked as a jewelry clerk. In 1910 they were farming in Cloburn township in Adams County where Charles was born. By 1921, they had moved to Long Beach in Los Angeles County, California and were living at 1821 East 19th Street. The father Ira was working as an oil worker. By 1927 the family had moved to 1912 Walnut Avenue. In that year Charles married Emma Jean Cole. This was the first of his four marriages. In 1930 Charles was operating a gas and oil service station. He and Emma were living with Charles' parents. The house was valued at $4,000 and the father Ira was working as a brick mason. The father Ira died that year and in 1931 Charles, while still living with his mother Elizabeth, was working as an oil worker. In 1932 Charles married Helen Kanthack, Then in 1934 he married Grace Peck. By 1936, Charles and his mother Elizabeth were living at 1411 East Esther. By 1939, he had married Irene (Ryan) Jones and they were living with Charles' mother Elizabeth. Charles Haskins was a violent man. In 1927 he was sentenced to 75-days for battery in Santa Ana, California. Then in 1939 he was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced from 0-to-10-years in San Quentin (California) State Prison. He entered San Quentin on the 18th of March. Charles was 5'-9¾" tall, had blue eyes, brown hair and a fair complexion. He was paroled on 20 May 1940 (after 14-months) and discharged from parole on 18 May 1943. After Charles was paroled in 1940 he registered for the World War II draft. He was living with Irene at 1415 Esther Street and was employed as a foreman by general contractor Bamber & Company in Long Beach. Charles signed the registration on the 16th of October. Charles' mother Elizabeth died in 1941. By 1946, he and Irene were living at 727 Arkansas in Bellflower, Los Angeles County (about 9-miles north from the Esther Street address). Helen became estranged from Charles and he then threatened to kill her if she did not return to him. Fearing for her life, Irene hired a bodyguard. A 24-year-old private detective named Kenneth Owens. On the 15th of November, a Friday, Charles entered the family home about 8pm and a gun battle ensued. The bodyguard shot and killed Charles. The following Thursday, the 21st, private detective Owens was cleared by a coroner's jury in the killing of Charles Haskins, husband of Owen's client Mrs Irene Haskins. |

Biography* | Vera Link Ryan Hastings Coger, 1908-1953: Vera was the second child of four born to farmer Herman Link. The mother of Vera and her older sister was Cortice Perry. Cortice died two-weeks before Vera celebrated her first birthday. In 1910, the widower Herman and his two daughters were liivng with his parents on their farm in Norwich township, Huron County, Ohio. Herman married Mabel Dellinger and together they produced his third daughter and lastly a son. In 1920, Herman and Mabel were renting a farm of their own. Vera completed an eighth grace education. In September 1926, the 18-year-old Vera, of Havana in Huron County, was married to 21-year-old James Ryan, of Willard in Huron County. The marriage was performed in Norwalk, Huron County by F. A. Powers (JP). Three months later their daughter was born. Vera and James were later divorced. On 01 April 1930, she was listed as Betty, and the wife of Ralph Hastings. Betty (Vera) and Ralph were renting half a duplex at 629 East Monroe Street, Sandusky in Erie County for $25/month. Ralph was manager of a confectionery. He and Vera were not actually married until the following 28th of May in Monroe, Michigan. On the marriage record his occupation is listed as the proprietor of a poolroom. The marriage was performed by Fred H. Schoepfer (JP). In 1932, they were renting rooms at 609 West Washington in Sandusky and were dealing in soft drinks at 715 West Market. In 1939, Vera was working as a book-binder in a city building. She worked 52-weeks in that year, earned wages of $492, and had other income. In 1940 Vera and three daughters were renting a half-duplex at 327 East Market Street in Sandusky for $26/month. Vera was listed as married, but Ralph was not living with the family7. On the 24th of November in 1947 Vera was married to Lloyd H. Coger in Sandusky by Lutheran Pastor Theo Stillborn Jr. Lloyd, 42, was a hotel manager in Toledo, Ohio and this was his first marriage. Vera, 39, was employed as a waitress in Sandusky and this was her third marriage. The following August they moved to Delphos in Allen and Van Wert counties, Ohio to managed the Beckman hotel and restaurant there. Lloyd died in March of 1952. Vera continued to managed the Beckman. Vera, 44, died in Lima, Allen County, Ohio at Saint Rita's hospital on a Thursday. She had been ill for five-years, the last year seriously. Vera was survived by three daughters, a brother Karl Link of Willard, two-sisters Mrs Cloyce Reed of Willard and Mrs James Jarrett of Sandusky. The funeral was held on Monday in Saint John's Caholic Church. Vera was buried with her husband Lloyd. Harter and Son Funeral Home of Delphos was in charge. |

Biography* | Robert Dudley Marshall. 1913-1998: Robert was the second of two sons born to first generation English-American Harry B. Marshall, born in Illinois, and Florence Ruger also born in Illinois. In 1920, the family was living in a house they owned with mortgage at 6146 Westminster Avenue in the 28th ward of Saintt Louis City, Missouri. On Tuesday, 26 May 1925, while on holiday in Michigan without their sons, both of Robert's parents were fatally injured when their automobile was struck by a Michigan Central passenger train at Hibbard's Crossing about 4-miles southeast of Owosso, Shiawassee County, Michigan. The train tracks in this area run alongside County Highway 71. Arrangements afterward for 11-year-old Robert and his brother are unknown but in 1928, Robert visited England. He traveled with Lucille Gallion, a first cousin of his mother Florence Ruger, Lucille's son Charles and May Marshall. May was married to Timothy Marshall who was 2nd cousin of Robert's father Harry. The party returned to the Port of New York on 13 August aboard the SS Minnesota. The ship had departed London 9-days earlier. In 1930, Robert was living with the widow Lucille Gallion in a $10,000 house, which she owned, at 601 South Busey Avenue in Urbana City, Champaign County, Illinois. Lucille was keeper of a lodging house. In 1935, Robert was living in Chicago, Illinois. His education included 4-years of college. In 1939 Robert married Mary Louise Howard in Lake Worth, Palm Beach County, Florida. In 1940 he, Mary and their child were renting at 61 Sixteenth in the 5th ward of Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia for $35/month. In 1939, Robert had worked 52-weeks as a sales-promoter for a citrus compnay and earned wages of $1,800. In October of 1940, Robert registered for the World War II draft. He was llisted as iving at 215 Middle Neck Road, Great Neck, Nassau County, New York. Robert was employed by Florida Citrus, Lakeland, Polk County, Florida. His contact was listed as wife at 869 East Rocks Springs Road, Atlanta, Georgia. Robert is 6' tall, weighs 205 lbs, with hazel eyes, black hair and a ruddy complexion. He has a scar on his chin and a gray streak in his hair. Robert signed the registration on October 31st. In the late 1950's the family is living in Lakeland, Florida at 2204 Kimg Avenue. In 1957 and 1959, Robert is listed as Vice-President of Lindner Industries (an industrial machinery company). In 1960 he is listed as sales manager of the same firm. In 1977, they are listed at the same King Avenue address and was living there upon his death. Robert, 84, died on a Thursday. |
