Biography* Minnie A. Hartman Ryan, 1877-1962:
Minnie was the third child of eight and the second of five daughters. Her father Levi was a first generation Bavarian-American born in Ohio. Her mother Sarah was born in Ohio also. Minnie grew up on a mortgaged farm that her parents owned in Orange township, Ashland Couny, Ohio. Minnie taught school at the Savannah Academy before her marriage to John Franklin (a.k.a. Frank J.) Ryan, also a teacher, in 1904. The marriage was solemnized at the Presbyterian church in Savannah by the Rev H. Franklin Kerr. In 1910 she and husband Frank Ryan owned a mortgaged home in Mount Gilead Village in Morrow County, Ohio. By 1915, they had moved to East Palestine in Columbiana County. And in 1920, they lived in a house they owned on Market Street Extension, Unity township also in Columbiana County. By 1930, they owned a $5,000 house at 518 Cottage Avenue in the 1st ward of Ashland, Montgomery township, Ashland County. Minnie was a member of the Methodist Church, Anti Can't Class, Women's Missionary Society, Sandusky Street Circle, D.A.R., Monday Night Club, Garden Club, Friday Club, and the Bible Club.

Minnie, 85, of 533 Sandusky Street in Ashland, died unexpectedly at the family summer cottage at 220 Oak Street in Lakeside, Ottawa County, on a Sunday. She was survived by two daughters, Mrs. Geraldine Mink of Cleveland and Mrs. Frances Stewart of Waterford, Michigan; three sisters, Mrs. Mae Gibson of Savannah, Mrs. Bertha Livingston of Savannah, and Mrs. Olive Shriver of Ashland; and one brother, Ray Hartman of Dayton. Her husband Frank preceded her in 1949. Funeral services were held on Thursday at the Gilbert Funeral Home and Chapel with Dr. Joseph E. Henderson officiating. Assisting the pastor was Dr. George C. Beebe.

Biography* Frances E. Ryan Stewart, 1914-2000:
Frances was the second of two daughters born to Frank Ryan and Minnie Hartman. Her father Frank was a teacher in public schools. In 1920 they lived on the Market Street Extension in Unity township of Columbiana County, Ohio. In 1930 at 518 Cottage Avenue in Ashaland, Ohio. By 1935, Frances was a nurse and was working at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. In 1939, she worked 40-weeks and earned $1,224 in wages. In 1940, Frances and another nurse were sharing an apartment at 1300 Bethune Avenue in the 6th ward of Detroit. They paid rent of $50/month. Frances worked 44-hours the week-ending 30 March. Soon after, she went to California where she acquired a Social Security number and a husband - Robert Stewart. Frances and Robert applied for and received a Los Angeles County marriage license. They were married on the 1st of December 1944 in Santa Monica, California by Andrew K Craig a U.S.Army chaplain and Minister of the Congregational church. Robert died in 1964. In 1995, Frances was living in Waterford, Oakland County, Michigan. In 2000, in Clarkston, Oakland County.

Frances, 86, died on a Saturday.

Biography* Geraldine A. Ryan Mink, 1910-1995:
Geraldine was the first of two daughters born to John Franklin Ryan and Minnie Aurora Hartman. They lived in Mount Gilead, Morrow County, Ohio and her father John was a public school teacher. In 1920, they lived on Market Street Extension in Unity township, Columbiana County. In 1930, they owned a house at 518 Cottage Avenue in the first ward of Ashland in Ashland County. Geraldine received undergraduate degrees from Ashland College and Western Reserve University and a graduate degree from Ohio State University. By 1935, Geraldine had left home and was living in Loudonville, Ashland County where she spent several years in the public school system and held several teaching positions. In 1939, with 5-years of college education she worked 36-weeks as a teacher and earned wages of $1,600. In 1940, Geraldine and two others were lodging with Samuel & Lena Kyle on East Wooster Avenue in Loudonville. In 1942 she was living in Ashland, Ohio and was married to Arthur Mink by the Rev. George C Beebe, Minister of the First Methodist-Episcopal church in Shelby, Ohio. Geraldine was a teacher of Latin, English and speech, dean of girls and chairwoman of the department of language and communication. She served as head of the department of serials at Ohio State University library. In 1946, she was appointed librarian at the school of nursing at the former Western Reserve University. At the new Case Western Reserve University, she was appointed assistant professor of nursing in library methodology and head of reference, which were positions she held until her retirement in 1976. The Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing Alumni Association of CWRU presented Mrs. Mink with a special award when she retired. In 1963, she was named to the honor roll for the Council and League for Nursing of Cleveland. Mrs. Mink belonged to the national and local chapter of the League for Nursing and the Medical Library Association. After retiring, Mrs. Mink volunteered at CWRU school of nursing, museums in the University Circle area and the University Circle chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons. She was a member of Epworth-Euclid United Methodist Church.

Geraldine, 84, died on a Monday at the Judson Park retirement community in Cleveland. She was survived by sister Frances E Stewart of Waterford, Michigan, a nephew and several cousins.A private service was held on Wednesday. Memorials to Case-Western Reserve University Library Fund, 10900 Euclid Avenue were suggested. Howard E Edwards Funeral Home of South Euclid was in charge.

Biography* Ida A. Barrick Ryan, 1885-1925:
Ida was the second of three daughters born to Ohio-born parents. Her paternal grandparents were born in Pennsylvania, her maternal grandparents were born in Scotland and Ireland. In 1900, the family owned their home in Jackson township, Ashland County, Ohio. Her father worked as a railroad foreman. Ida was married to James Ryan in 1902 at the age of 17 with her parent's consent. The marriage was solemnized by the Rev J. W. Geier Pastor of the Reformed church in Germano, Ohio. Germano is more than 90-miles from Polk. The place of the marriage is not listed in the marriage record so Polk, since the bride lived there, has been assumed. In 1910, married and with two sons, Ida, husband James and sons were renting on Main Street in Council Grove, Morris County, Kansas. James was a brakeman on the railroad. By 1918, they were back in Ohio and living at 503 South Main in Willard Village, Huron County. In 1920 they owned a mortgaged duplex in the 400-block of Tiffin Street in Willard.

Ida, age 40, of 503 South Main Street, Willard, died in New London, Ohio on a Wednesday. Cause of death was infectious ulcer of stomach, taxemia and dead feotus (10-days). Contributory cause was pregnancy and possible diptheria, Suspicious organsims were found in the throat. No operation preceded death and no autopsy was performed. Ida was attended by Doctor Jacoby, New London. Undertaker J. B. Wyker of New London was in charge.

Biography* Arthur DeWitt Mink, 1909-1994:
Arthur, the first of two sons, was born to a father, also Arthur, born in New York and a mother Bertha born in Maryland. In 1910, the family was renting at 417 Jackson Street in the 4th ward of East Liverpool, Columbiana County, Ohio. Arthur's father was a Methodist minister. In 1920, they rented at 407 North Gay Street in the 2nd ward of Mount Vernon, Knox County, Ohio. The family then moved to Martins Ferry, Belmont County, Ohio where Arhur Jr graduated from high school in 1827. That fall they moved to Orrville in Wayne County. Arthur Jr.'s father died in 1928, and in 1930 Arthur Jr. was living with his widowed mother, who was renting for $25/month, at 401 North Vine Street in Orville Village, Wayne County, Ohio. Arthur was a student at Mount Union College, a Methodist institution, in Alliance, Ohio. He earned a bachelor of arts degree there and went on to earn bachelor of science and master's degrees in library science at Western Reserve University. Arthur worked as assistant librarian of the Orrville Public Library from 1938. In 1939, he worked 52-weeks and earned $720 in wages. In 1940 his mother was paying $20/month in rent. Also in 1940, Arthur, age 31, registered for the World War II draft. He had moved to 2088 Neil Avenue in Columbus, Ohio while his mother continued to live on North Vine Street. The Columbus address is on the campus of Ohio State University. Arthur must have been living there to go to school. He was described as being 5"-10" in height, weighing 135 ponds with brown eyes and hair and a light complexion. The registration was signed on the 16th of October. When Arthur and Geraldine Ryan made application for a marriage license, almost two years later, on 29 August 1942, he was still living in Columbus. Arthur joined the Case Western Reserve University Library in 1946 and held several positions there, retiring in 1972. He also worked at the Ohio State Archaeological & Historical Society, and as chief of the Cleveland Regional Union Catalog. Arthur was the archivist and and a 30-year member of the Men's Club of Cleveland. He was a member of the Epworth-Euclid United Methodist Church. In 1983, Arthur and Geraldine lived at 1884 Forest Hills Blvd in Cleveland and by 1993 had moved to Apt 306 at 2455 Lee Blvd.

Arthur, 85, died on a Thursday of heart disease at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals in Cleveland. He was survived by his wife, Geraldine; and a nephew. A private family service was held on Monday at Lake View Cemetery. Memorials to Case Western Reserve University Library Fund, 10900 Euclid Avene were suggested. Howard W. Edwards Huneral Home of South Euclid was in charge.

Robert was the fourth of five children and the youngest of three sons. His father Nelson was born in Ohio and his mother Margaret in Kentucky. In 1910 the family was renting on Keyser Avenue in Deshler Village, Henry County, Ohio. The father Nelson was an engineer (a locomotive operator) on a railroad. In 1920, the family lived in a house owned free of motgage on Lind Street in Deschler Village. Robert was not listed with the family in 1930. By 1935, he was renting an apartment at 665 West Hancock in the 4th ward of Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. In 1940, the rent for the apartment was $30/month. With four years of college, Robert was employed as an engineer in refrigeraton parts and supplies. He worked 42-hours the week-ending 30 March. In 1939, Robert worked 52-weeks and earned wages of $1,500. He registered for the World War II draft on 16 October 1940. Robert was 5ft-10in tall, weighed 243 pounds, had blue eyes, blond hair and light complexion. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the Seabees, the Navy's Construction Battalion (CBs). At the time he lived at 79 Burlingame in Detroit. Frances Ryan travelled to Los Angeles in 1944 where she and Robert obtained a Los Angeles County license to be married. The marriage took place in Santa Monica, California on the 1st of December and was officiated by Andrew K Craig a U.S. Army chaplain and Minister of the Congregational Church. There was a Seabee base in Port Hueneme about 50-miles north of Santa Monica. Robert was probably stationed there. Later, after discharge, he worked in real estate.

Robert, 56, died on a Wednesday5. He was survived bu his wife Frances. Services were held on Saturday at the Lewis E. Wint Funeal Home in Clarkston, Oaklamd County.

  5. Robert's obit states that he was fprmerly of Corunna Road in Waterford. Do not know where this place is. The only Corunna Road in Michigan listed on Google Maps is in Flint. Waterford is a township in Oakland County.

We know very little about this child. Most of what we know - everything but the years - comes from her record on findagrave.com. We can surmise that Alice was born between late 1903 and early 1904 in Willard, Huron County, Ohio. From her undated bio in the findagrave record, Alice died on a Tuesday at the home of her maternal grandparents in Polk, Ashland County, Ohio at the age of four-months and ten-days and was buried in Polk Cemetery on Thursday. Dr. Cummings conducted the funeral service and a large number of friends were present. Cause of death was cholera infantum.

In 1910, James was living with his parents and brother in a rented house on Main Street in Council Grove, Morris County, Kansas. By 1918, the family had moved back to Ohio and were living at 503 South Main Street in Willard Village, Huron County, Ohio. In September 1926, James was married to Vera Link at Norwalk, Huron County by F. A. Powers (JP). Three months later their daughter was born. James and Vera were divorced before 1930. In 1930, James was working for a house painting company and living with his widowed father at the Main Street house. In June of that year, James married Susanna Smith at Norwalk in Huron County. It was the second marriage for both. That marriage did not last very long and in the last half of the decade, James married Dorothy Jane (maiden name unknown). In 1935, James was living in Saundusky, Erie County. In 1939, he was working in a building as a painter and maintainer. James, with a sixth grade education, worked 22-weeks in that year and earned wages of $384. In 1940, he and Dorothy were living in Washington township outside of Mansfield in Richland County. They were renting on a farm for $18/month. James was unemployed in 1940 to the week-ending 30 March and was seeking work. He registered for the World War II draft in October, still unemployed. James was 5ft-8½in tall, weighed 155 pounds, had blue eyes, brown hair and a ruddy complexion. He was missing the index finger of his left hand. They moved to Florida in 1950. James was a member of the Masons.

James, 52, died at his home at 765 West Oakland Park Boulevard, Oakland Park, Broward County, Florida on a Thursday. He was survived by his wife Dorothy, a daughter, sister Mrs Merle Moore of Fort Lauderdale and two brothers. The funeral was held on Saturday at the Blackburn Chapel.

Born in Ohio of parents born in Iowa and Ohio, the family was renting on Main Street in Council Grove, Morris County, Kansas in 1910. The father James was a brakeman on the railroad. By 1918, they were back in Ohio and living at 503 South Main in Willard, Huron County. By 1928, Ross had left home, was working as a bus operator in Akron, Summit County and living at 684 Madison Avenue. In 1929, Ross and Phyllis Harding took out a Summit County license to get married. Ross lied about his age on the application and listed he would be 24 on the 2nd of July when he would have been 20. He and Phyllis were married by Minister of the Gospel Rev. C. L. Johnson of Akron. In 1930, Ross and wife Phyllis were renting an apartment (in a triplex) at 91 Wells Avenue in Akron's 3rd ward. Ross was working as a salesman in a shoe store. By 1933, they had moved to Brooklyn, New York where they lived until at least 1936 before moving back to Akron. In May of 1939, Ross joined the Akron Fire Department and worked 36-weeks that year as a truck driver and earned wages of $1,100. He also had non-wage income. In 1940, they owned a $3,300 house at 1068 Pitkin Avenue in the 1st ward. Ross worked 72-hours the week ending 30 March. He also registered for the World War II draft in 1940. Ross was 5ft-10in tall, weighed 160 pounds, had brown eyes and hair and a ruddy complexion. He signed Ross Raymod Ryan on the 16th of October. Ross was injured in an auto accident near Saint Louis, Missouri in May of 1960. He returned to active duty on the 1st of July and was assigned to Station No. 7 in North Hill as a fire dispatcher. Ross collapsed at work on September 26th. Subsequently lung cancer was discovered.

He was survived by his wife Phyllis, a son, a daughter, three grandchildren, brother Ervin of Ravenna, Ohio and sister Mrs Annabelle Moore of Florida. Services were held on Thursday at Adams Funeral Home in Akron with the Rev Ralph H. Richardson officiating.

Biography* Ervin John Ryan, 1912-1997:
Ervin was the third child of four and the last of three sons. In 1918, the family was living at 503 South Main in Willard, Huron County, Ohio. Ervin's father James was a conductor on the Baltimore & Ohio railroad. Ervin received a 12th grade education and by 1930 was working as an air-bleeder on the railroad. In October of that year, he was married to Mrs. Florence M. Laser Parr in Shelby, Richland County, Ohio by Lutheran Minister D. Bruce Young. Shelby is about 15 miles south of Willard. In the marriage license application Ervin reported his age as 21 - he was actually 18. Mrs Parr reported her age as 22. It was her second marriage and she was divorced from her first husband. In 1935, Ervin was living in Kent, Portage County, Ohio. Agnes Hudgins, who was to become his wife, was there also. In 1938, when they married, Ervin was still in Kent working as a machinist. Agnes was working as a nurse in Cleveland. The marriage took place at the Baptist Church in East Cleveland officieated by the Rev George Bigelow. In 1940, Ervin and Agnes were renting, for $30/month, at 2756 Bailey Road in the 4th ward of Cuyahoga Falls, Summit County, Ohio. Ervin was selling insurance. In 1939, he earned wages of $1,500. On 15 October 1940, Ervin enlisted in the U.S. Army at Camp McCoy in Sparta, Wisconsin. He had the rank of Staff Sgt in the Quartermaster Corps, Regular Army, Hawaiian Department. Ervin spent 20-years in the U.S. Army, retiring on 31 October 1960. In 1948, Ervin and Agnes divorced. The divorce was granted in Saint Clair County, Michigan. The couple had no children. He married Helen Holt circa 1948. They lived in Honolulu, Hawaii where a son was born. After Ervin's relaese from the Army, they lived at 884 Jones Avenue in Ravenna, Ohio. He later worked in public service with the police department in miscellaneous entertainment and recreation services.

Ervin, 85, died of natural causes on a Wednesday.

We do not know a lot about Annabelle. In 1940 she is not listed with the family and is presumably married and living under a different surname than Ryan. According to family lore Annabelle married several times and died circa 1985. In 1960, when her brother Ross died, she was living in Florida as Mrs Moore.

Biography* Phyllis Harding Ryan Campbell, 1910-2002:
Phyllis was the elder of two daughters. Both parents were born in Ohio. Her mother Olive's mother was born in Germany. Her father Grover was a train driver (engineer) on a railroad. In 1920, the family owned a mortgaged house at 88 East Tallmadge Avenue in Akron's 1st ward. Phyllis graduated from North High School at 985 Gorge Blvd in Akron. In 1929, Phyllis, 18, and Ross Ryan applied for a license to marry. Her parents consented to the marriage. Phyllis was living at home with her parents at 903 Dan Street in Akron. She was working as a stenographer at the Ostrov Shoe Company. The wedding took place on a Saturday at the North Hill Church of Christ, 897 Columbus Avenue, with Minister C. L. Johnson officiating. In 1930, Phyllis and Ross rented an apartment in a triplex at 91 Wells Avenue in the 3rd ward of Akron, Summit County, Ohio for $65/month. She and Ross spent a few years in Brooklyn, New York and then returned to Akron. By 1940 they owned a $3,300 house at 1068 Pitkin Avenue in the 1st ward. Phyllis worked as a stenographer at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. She worked 45-hours the week-ending 30 March. In 1939, Phyllis worked 28-weeks and earned $480 in wages. She eventually retired from Goodyear as secretary to the General Credit Manager. In 1954, she and Ross moved to Tallmadge. Husband Ross died in 1960 and in 1962 Phyllis was married for a second time to Dick Campbell. He died in 1982. Phyllis was a member of the First Congregational Church of Tallmadge, where she was active in the church choir and women's fellowship, Amaranth, Ne-Hta Chapter O.E.S., Tallmadge AARP, and Wingfoot Girls Club.

Phyllis, 92, died on a Sunday. She was preceded in death by husbands, Ross Ryan and Dick Campbell; a son and a son-in-law. Phyllis was survived by a daughter, four-grandchildren and ten-great-grandchildren. The funeral was held on Saturday at the chapel at Greenlawn Memorial Park with Rev. C. Edward Carter officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions were requested to the Pastors Discretionary Fund at First Congregational Church of Tallmadge. Hennessy-Bagnoli Funeral Home of Tallmadge was in charge.

Agnes, the middle child of three daughters, was raised in Yale City, Saint Clair County, Michigan. Her father William was a first generation English Canadian-Irish-American born in Michigan. Her mother Laura was also born in Michigan. In 1920, the family owned their house in the 3rd ward of Yale City free of motgage. The father William was owner operator of a Cigar and Pool Store. In 1930 the family owned a $4,000 house on North Street and the father William was secretary for a fire insurance company. By 1935, Agnes had left home and was living in Kent, Portage County, Ohio. In 1938, a resident of 1867 East 93rd Street in Cleveland, Ohio and working as a nurse, she was married to Ervin Ryan by the Rev Gordon E. Bigelow of the Baptist church in East Cleveland. It was the first marriage for both. The Cuyahoga County, Ohio marriage record listed Agnes's mother as Pearl Hollister. Agnes's mother Laura died in 1928 and her father had married Pearl so, Pearl was actually Agnes's step-mother. In 1940, Agnes and Ervin were renting at 2756 Bailey Road in the 4th ward of Cuyahoga Falls in Summit County. Agnes was working as a nurse in a city hospital. In 1939, she worked 52-weeks and earned wages of $1,000. Almost ten-years later, in 1948, Agnes and Ervin were divorced. They had no children. Agnes was married for a second time in 1949 to Archie Douglas Lince. She was a resident of Port Huron in Saint Clair County, Michigan. This marriage took place in Indiana.

Agnes, age 53, died on a Friday. She is buried with her second husband Archie and in the same cemetery as her parents.

Biography* Helen A. Holt Ryan, 1915-1999:
Helen was an only child. Her father Roland was born in Indiana. His own parents were born in Pennsylvania. Helen's mother was born in Ohio as was Helen herself. In 1920 the family was renting at 151½ North Front in Cuyahoga Falls Village, Summit County, Ohio. Helen's father Roland was working as an interior decorator, using paint and wallpaper. In 1930, they were living with Helen's maternal grandfather Fred Jacobs. Fred, a widower and first generation German American, was renting, for $22/month, at 228 Water Street in the 2nd ward of Kent City in Portage County, Ohio. He was proprietor of a wallpaper business. Roland was still working as an interior decorator and Helen's mother Belle was working as a seamstress in a dress factory. Helen completed a high school education. In 1940, she was not listed with her parents who were living at 1069 Jones Avenue in Ravenna, Ohio. Helen married Ervin Ryan probably in the late 1940s. He had joined the U.S.Army in October of 1940 and was stationed in Hawaii. Helen spent some, if not all, of her time in Hawaii and their son was born there in 1950. By 1951, Helen and Ervin also had a house at 884 Jones Avenue in Ravenna. Ervin retired from the Army in 1960 and they returned to Ravenna.

Helen, 84, died in Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna on a Monday. She was buried with her husband Ervin.
