Biography* | Ann Conley Boyd Fritz, 1901-1976: Ann was a first generation Irish American. She was the sixth of ten chidlren born to James Connolly and Mary McArdle. James immigrated in 1884, Mary in 1888. They were both literate. Family member's surnames were inconsistently recorded as either Connolly or Conley. Conley was chosen for Ann primarily because that spelling is in all her records found since 1920. When Ann was born in 1901, as Connolly, the family was living on East 39th Street in New York City. Father James was working as a laborer. By 1905 the family was living on Harth Street in Madison, Lake County, South Dakota. And in 1910, they were renting a farm in Orland township. By 1915, they were back in Madison and owned their own home at 400 Fourth Street South. James was still farming. By 1920 he was driving a coal wagon. Ann was married in 1923 and after 1925 she, husband Raymond Boyd and their daughter moved to California spending several years in Colorado on the way. In 1928 and 29 they were living at 1832 North Royer in Colorado Springs. By 1930, they were renting, for $45/month, at 133 West 84th Place in Los Angeles. Ann's brother Patrick Conley was living with them. Husband Raymond died in 1954. In 1964 Ann married Ray Fritz in Los Angeles County. Ann, 75, died on a Sunday, the day after Christmas in 1976. |

Biography* | Irene M. Ryan Jones Haskins Huffaker, 1909-1984: Irene was the third of four children born to Edward Ryan and Ethel Miller and the only one to survive childhood. She spent her early years on the family farm in Farmington township, Lake County, South Dakota. By 1916, the family had moved to Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Colorado and were living at 621 North Wahsatch Avenue. The following year they were renting at 555 East Platte Avenue. In 1923, Irene's parents divorced and in 1924 she lived with her father Edward at 618 North Weber. In 1925 Irene lived with her mother Ethel at 1321 West Colorado Avenue. Her mother married again that year and in 1926 Irene lived with her mother and step-father at 237 North Institute. In May of that year, Irene married William R. Jones, age 21. The marriage took place in Limon, Lincoln County and was performed by Minister Thomas P Carey of Colorado Springs. Irene, who was 16 years old at her marriage, was listed as 19 in the record. In 1927 Irene and William lived at 115 N Prospect, In 1928 at 215 Custer Avenue amd 1929 at 836 East Kiowa. In 1930 they rented at 243 North Institute for $22/month. Irene worked as a clerk in a grocery store that husband William managed. About 1931 they had a son and in 1933 were living at 501 Swope Avenue. In 1936, Irene and William were divorced and by 1938, Irene and her son had moved to Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California and was living at 239c Ximeno Avenue with her mother. Later that year, Irene married Charles Haskins and they lived at 1415 East Esther Avenue in a house they owned. In 1939, Irene worked 17-weeks as a waitress in a restaurant and earned wages of $160. In 1940, Irene, her son and her mother Ethel were living at the Esther Avenue house which was valued at $3,000. Her husband Charles was in prison. He was released later in 1940 and was out on parole. By 1946 they had moved to 727 Arkansas in Belflower also in Los Angeles County about nine-miles north of the Esther Avenue house. Irene and Charles became estranged and he threatened to kill her if she did not return to him. In fear of her life, Irene hired a bodyguard. Later Charles came to the house, a gun battle ensued and the bodyguard shot and killed Charles. In 1948, Irene was living in Long Beach and working as a saleswoman for insurance agency Boggs Flying Brokers, Inc in Bellflower. By 1952, she had returned to Colorado Springs and was living at 128 South Wahsatch Avenue. In January 1958, Irene's mother Ethel died in California. In December of that year, Irene was married to Jesse Huffaker, also of Colorado Springs, in Hawthorne7, Los Angeles County, Califrnia. Irene and Jack lived at the Washatch address until at least 1960. In 1963 they lived at 302 East Saint Elmo Avenue. Irene, 75, died at her home on a Thursday. She was survived by her husband Jack, one son, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Services were held on Monday at Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home, 1730 E. Fountain Blvd., with the Rev. Gerald MacDonald officiating. |

Biography* | Jesse ''Jack'' Leland Huffaker, 1918-1999: Jesse was the fourth of six children and the third of four sons. His father John and his mother Mary Ella were both born in Colorado. In 1920 the family was renting in Cositlla County, Colorado. In 1930 they were renting, for $42/month, in Romeo, Conejos County and were farming. Costiila and Conejos are adjacent counties on the Colorado border with New Mexico. In 1939 Jesse, of Romeo, with an 11th grade education, married Margaret Schofield, of Tres Piedras, Rio Arriba County, New Mexico with a 10th grade education. Tres Piedras is about 40-miles south of Romeo. In 1940, Jesse and Margaret were renting half a duplex on a farm in Vallectios, Rio Arriba County, New Mexico for $3.00/month. Jesse who had no wages or other income in 1939 was working as an edger at the M. A. Goodge & Co sawmill in Tres Piedras. Later in 1940, Jesse registered for the World War II draft. He was 5'10½'' tall, weighed 160 pounds, had blue eyes, brown hair a light complexion and identifing marks or scares. The registration was signed Jesse L Huffaker on October 16th. His mailing address was amended to 315 South Hancock, Colorado Springs, Colorado. In 1943, Jesse and Margaret were living at 2733 East Boilder in Colorado Springs. On 17 July 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Army at Denver, Colorado. Jesse's civil occupation was listed as skilled cranemen, derrickmen, hoistmen, and shovelmen. He was assigned service number 37710180. Jesse was discharged on 13 November 1948 and was living with Margaret at 914 Alexander Highway in Colorado Springs. He worked as a building contractor and later as a carpenter. By 1957, Jesse had separated from Margaret and was living at 128 South Wahsatch Avenue. In 1058 he married Irene Ryna who lived at the same address. In 1963, Jesse and Irene lived at 702 East Saint Elmo Avenue. Jesse ''Jack'' Huffaker, 80, died on a Sunday in Shenandoah, Virginia. Jesse died at the home of his daughter-in-law K. Virginia Anthony with whom he lived. Jesse was survived by a son, five daughters, a brother, Arthur D; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Inurnment will be at a later date. Biography* | Frances Anelma Ryan, 1919-1966: Born in Michigan to a Minnsota born father and a Finland born mother, Frances grew up in Michigan and Wisconsin. In 1930, the family was renting at 138 South Webster Street in Green Bay. In 1939, Frances worked as a stenographer for a college professor. She worked 12-weeks and earned wages of $166. Frances was unemployed for 9-weeks in the year-ending 30 March 1940. She worked 38-hours that last week. Frances completed two-years of college. In 1945, when her father died, she was living in Chicago, Illinois. In 1966, Frances was living on Berkley Place in Smithtown, Suffolk County, New York. She was empoloyed in a public relations group for an advertising agency. Miss Frances Anelma Ryan, 46, of Berkley Place, Smithtown, Long Island, New York died suddenly at Good Samaritan hospital, West Palm Beach, Florida on a Thursday. Her funeral was held the following Wednesday at Saint Patrick's, Smithtown. Frances was survived by her mother, Mrs James H Ryan of Smithtown, one brother and sister-in-law M/M James W (sic) Ryan, a niece and nephew, all of Smithtown. The O. R. Davis Funeral Home, Landing Ave, Smithtown was in charge of arrangements. |

In 1942 when he registered for the World War II draft, James V was living at 219 North Brooks Street in Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin. He listed his contact as E. C. O'Connor of 514 South Quincy Street in Green Bay, Wisconsin and his employer as contractor Patrick Warren at the U. S. Airport in Madison, Wisconsin (summer work only, he was a student at the Univiverstiy of Wiscosin). James was listed as 6'-0" in height, 160 pounds in weight with blue eyes, brown hair and light complexion. He signed the registration James V. Ryan on 30 June. In 1945 when his father died he was listed as Lieut. James V Ryan, Army Air Corps, Detroit, Michigan. In 1951 while working as a test pilot for Piasecki Corp. at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River (also known as NAS Pax River) he met his future wife Vera Hammond. They married in 1951 and moved to Port Jefferson, Suffolk County, New York. After the birth of their two children, they moved to Smithtown, New York also in Suffolk County. In 1961 James won the Grand Prix at Paris International Air Show for best presentation in flight. In 1963 he tested the first remote controlled anti-sub and one man helicopter. James was featured in Life and Fortune magazines as first to do a loop in a helicopter. He was the founder of the Twirly-Birds. And was an experimental helicopter test pilot for 22-years. Sometime after 1966, James was proprietor of Ryan's Hotel4 in Bohemia and the Berkley Place in Smithtown. He was president of the Brook-Slip League Soft Ball Team and a member of Bohemia American Legion Post. On 25 Febraury 1971, James was transported to hospital by ambulance from his home at 895 Church Street in Bohemia, Suffolk County, New York. James, 47, died in early March 1971. He was survived by his widow the former Vera Hammond of Maryland; two-children of Smithtown; and his mother Mrs Anelma Ryan of Bohemia. Services were held on Wednesday the 10th of March at the O. R. Davis Funeral Home. |

Biography* | Vera L. Hammond Ryan, 1929-2014: Vera was the second of two children and the only daughter. She was born in Maryland as were her parents and grandparents. Vera's father Walter was a house carpenter. In 1930 they lived in a $1,500 house which they owned in Salisbury, Wicomico County, Maryland. Vera's father Walter died in 1933 when she was three-years-old. In 1940 the mother Nellie was renting half a duplex at 503 E Williams Street for $15/month. In 1939, Nellie worked 50-weeks in a shirt factory and earned $750 in wages. In 1948 Vera and her mother were living at 306 East Baker Street. The brother Earl was not listed in Salisbury. Vera was working as a stenographer for the L. W. Gunby Company. Then she was a secretary for Piasecki Corp. at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River (also known as NAS Pax River), Saint Mary's County, Maryland where she met her future husband, James Ryan who was a test pilot there. Vera and James were married in 1951 and moved to Port Jefferson, Suffolk County, New York. After the birth of their two children, they moved to Smithtown, New York also in Suffolk County. Vera went back to work and became the secretary for Walter Kissinger, the brother of Henry, at Tempo Industries for many years. Her husband James died in 1971. Later she worked for the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre in New York City as a fundraising manage. Vera Lived in Ronkonkoma, New York for a number of years and in 1993 moved back to Maryland. There she lived at 7504 Jones Hastings Road and then 7511 Madeline Circle (a four-minute walk) both in Parsonsburg outside Salisbury. There she worked for the Rev. Michael Moyer as his secretary at the Episcopal Church in Berlin until 2005. Vera, 84, died on a Tuesday at John Knox Village Medical Center in Tampa. She was survived by two children, two grandchildren and a great grandchild. In addition to her parents and husband, Vera was also predeceased by a brother, Walter Earl Hammond, Jr. A funeral service was held on Saturday with Rev. Moyer officiating. Holloway Funeral Home of Salisbury was in charge. |
