Biography* | Raymond Sylvester Boyd, 1898-1954: Born and raised on farms in Herman township, Lake County, South Dakota, Raymond was the eldest of six children. With a 10th grade education, he enlisted in the U.S.Army on 30 April 1917 at Madison, South Dakota and was discharged on 25 February 1919 at Camp Dodge, Iowa. While in the service, Raymond was assigned to Company D, 116th Supply Train, 41st division and was discharged with the rank of Corporal. Upon discharge he returned to the home farm in Herman township. After Raymond's marriage to Ann Conley and the birth of their first child, he was admitted, on 29 April 1926, to Battle Mountain Sanitarium, Hot Springs, Fall River County, South Dakota - one of the National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. Raymond was admitted for observation of pulmonary tuberculosis. His occupation was listed as a waiter. Wife Ann and child remained in Madison, South Dakota. He was discharged on 19 May 1927 with a disabiliy pension of $95/month authorized by the U.S. Veterans Bureau. Raymond and family then spent sveral years in Colorado on their way to California. In 1928 and 29 they were living at 1832 North Royer in Colorado Springs. By 1930, they were renting, for $45/month, at 133 West 84th Place in Los Angeles. The family moved to Pasadena in Los Angeles County circa 1932. In 1940, they were renting at 71 North Greenwood in Pasadena for $33/month. In 1942, Raymond registered for the World War II draft! (A disabled veteran - interesting). The family was living at 278 South Allen Avenue in Pasadena. He was described as being 5 feet-8½ inches tall, weighing 145 pounds with blue eyes, grey hair and light complexion. He was a member of BPO Elks in Madison, South Dakota and East Pasadena Legion Post 280. Raymond, 55, of 2509 Galbreth Road, Pasadena, California died at home on a Friday. He was seriously ill for a month. Raymond was survived by his wife Ann, two daughters, two sisters: Mrs. Frances Nultemeir and Mrs. Veronica McKinnon; three brothers: H. O. Boyd, W. R. Boyd and Donald Boyd. The funeral was held on Monday at Our Lady of the Assumption. Wendell P. Cabot & Sons, 27 Chestnut was in charge. |

Biography* | Mary F. Boyd Nultemeier Stevenson, 1900-1987: Mary Frances was the second of six children and the oldest of two daughters. She was raised on farms in Herman township, Lake County, South Dakota and received a 6th grade education. In 1925, before she married, Mary Frances was working in Madison in Lake County as a clerk. By 1926, Mary and Edward were living at 181 Oak in Wyandotte, Wayne County, Michigan. She was working as a clerk at the Reno Drug Company. 1930, Mary and her husband Edward Nultemeier were renting at 840 Oak Street in Wyandotte, Michigan for $40/month. Her 1st cousin Regina Mulvihill was boarding with them. In 1933, they were liivng in apartment #5 at 3028 1st. Sometime after 1935 they moved to Solano County, California and lived at 450 5th Street in Richmond. By 1940 were renting a house at 327½ Kentucky, Vallejo, also in Solano County, for $30/month. By 1944, they lived at 14 Selfridge. In 1948, she worked as a clerk at the Naval Shipyard on Mare Island. Mary's husband Edward died in 1952. In 1953 and 54 she was employed at Benicia Arsenal. By 1977 she married a Mr. Stevenson and were living in Vallejo. Nothing has been learned about him. Mary, 87, died on a Tuesday. |

In 1939, he worked 52/weeks and earned wages of $1,680.00. By October 1940, the family had moved to California. They were living with his sister Mary Frances and her husband Edward Nultemeier at 450 5th Street in Richmond. Henry registered for the WW2 draft. He was 5ft-9in tall, weighed 144 pounds, had blue eyes, blond hair and ruddy complexion. He was employed at Pacific Grey Hound Lines in San Rafael. In 1977, They were living in Cerritos, Los Angeles County. Henry died on a Saturday, four-days before his 85th birthday. |

Biography* | Donald Andrew Boyd, 1909-1977: Donald, the fourth of six children and the third of four sons, was born and grew-up on a farm in Herman township, Lake County, South Dakota. Both of his parents were first generation Irish-Americans born in Minnesota. After his father died in 1921, his mother moved into Madison where the family lived as 803 North Egan Avenue in the 2nd ward. In 1930, Donald, having completed one year of college, was living at home with his mother Nell and two siblings and working as a driver for a taxicab company. He then worked for the South Dakota Highway Department as a surveyor and in 1935 was living in Clark City, South Dakota. During the Great Depression, Donald worked for the WPA as a time keeper on road work. In 1939, he worked 52-weeks and earned wages of $840. In 1940, Donald was living with his mother Nell at 505 Harth Avenue North in Madison's 1st ward. Here he probably met his future wife Lola Shipton who lived around the corner in a house 180-feet away. Donald registered for the World War II draft about this time. He was described as being 5ft-8in tall, weighing 136-pounds with blue eyes, blond hair and light complexion. Donald and Lola were married in October 1942 and the following month he was inducted into the U.S.Army. He was discharged three years later in 1945. While in the Army Donald was assigned to Battery A, 957th Field-Artillery Battalion. After his return, Donald resumed working at the state Highway Department as a surveyor. Later, he worked at Farmers Lumberyard. Then at Madison Wholesale Grocery Company and the East River Electric Power Cooperative. Born and raised a Cathoilc Donald became a member of Grace Episcopal Church. He served a term as Commander of the Disabled American Veterans and was a member of the American Legion McKibbon-Mosher Post 25. He also was a member of Lake Post 2638, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Lodge 1442, BPO Elks. Donald, age 67, died at his Madison home on a Wednesday. He was survived by his wife Lola; two brothers: William R. of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Orvin H of El Cerrito, California; two sisters: Mary Francis Stevenson and Margaret Veronice McKinnon, both of Vallejo, California; plus several nieces and nephews. Services were held on Saturday from Grace Episcopal with the Rev. Fieber of Brookings officiating. Hallenbeck Funeral Home was in charge. |

Margaret was working as a waitress in a restaurant and worked 60-hours the week ending 30 March. In 1939, she worked 52-weeks and earned wages of $520. By 1947, she had moved to Vallejo, Solano, California where she worked as a clerk on Mare Island, a Navy shipyard. Margaret met Paul McKinnon, a fellow clerk on Mare Island. They eventually married and lived in Vallejo. Her husband Paul died in 1974. Margaret's sister Mary Frances Stevenson lived there also. Margaret, 76, died on a Saturday |

Biography* | William Ronald "Bud" Boyd, 1917-1997: Born on the home farm in Herman township of Lake County, he was called by his middle name, Ronald, in his early years. Later he was called by his first name or, more familiarly, by his nickname - Bud. His father died before Bud's 3rd birthday and his widowed mother moved the family into Madison. In 1930 they were at 803 North Egan Avenue and Bud, at 13, was the head janitor at the Normal School. About 1940, Bud went to California for a spell and lived with his sister's Nultemeier family in Vallejo. In 1939, he worked 30 weeks as a salesman. He did not recieve a salary but did receive commissions. Then Bud moved to Oregon where he lived for a spell. Then finally ended up in Cheyenne, Wyoming where he was a retail driver for Plains Dairy and for Dairy Gold. In 1949, he married his childhood sweetheart, Dorothy Shipton, in Cheyenne and lived there the rest of his life without issue. Bud was raised a Catholic and later became a member of Saint Mark's Episcopal church. In 1959, Bud and Dorothy lived at 2558 Deming Blvd. By 1981 at 3810 Reed Avenue. Bud, age 80, died at Life Care Center in Cheyenne on a Wednesday. A memorial service was held in Cheyenne on Saturday at the Schrader Funeral Chapel in Cheyenne. The Rev Tim Solon officiated. He was buried in South Dakota. Ellsworth Funeral Home in Madison was in charge. Bud was survived by his wife Dorothy and several nieces and nephews in California and Texas. He was predeceased by his parents, three brothers, and two sisters. |

Biography* | Dorothy L. "Dot" Shipton Boyd, 1915-2007: By 1910, Dorothy's parents had moved from a mortgaged farm in Tilden township in Cherokee County, Iowa to a house they owned free of morgage at 1205 13th Street in the 1st ward of Madison, Lake County, South Dakota. Her father had changed occupations from farming to dealing real estate. Dorothy was the seventh and last child. By 1920, the family owned a house at 210 Eighth Street also in the 1st ward. Her father was now an insurance agent. By 1930, the family owned an $8,000 house at 202 Fourth Street NE also in the 1st ward. Dorothy attended Washinton State University where she graduated with a bachelors degree in physical education. After graduating Dot spent some years in Colorado before her 1949 marriage. She changed careers then and was a bookkeeper with Plains Dairy and Darigold Dairy for 35-years. She and her husband lived in Cheyenne, Wyoming. In 1959, they lived at 2558 Deming Blvd. In 1981 at 3810 Reed Avenue. Dot volunteered for Cheyenne Hospice and Meals on Wheels. Her husband died in 1997. Dot, age 92, died on a Sunday at Cheyenne Life Care Center in Cheyenne. She was precded by her husband William in 1997 and survived by three nephews, one niece and many great-nephews and nieces. A memorial ceremony was held on Saturday February 2nd at Cheyenne in Schrader's Funeral Home which was officiated by the Rev. David Stratton. Donations to Cheyenne Hospice or Cheyenne Meals on Wheels were requested in lieu of flowers. Dot was cremated and her remains later buried in Madison. |

Biography* | Paul Page McKinnon, 1912-1974: Paul was the 4th child of his father Alva and the first of Alva's second wife Edna. In 1915, the family was living in Scammon, Cherokee County, Kansas. By 1920 they had moved to Cherry township of Montgomery County, Kansas. There, the father Alva, born in Ohio, was a printer in a print shop and the mother Edna, born in Kansas, was a helper in the shop. Another son was born in 1921. By 1930 the family had moved to Osage township in Labette County and Alva was farming. They owned their $1,200 home on the farm and had a radio. Alva died in 1934 and the widow and her two sons moved to California. Following four years of college, Paul went to work for the Carter Oil Company in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was issued a social security number as a part of the hiring process. Paul then moved to 415 South 4th Street in Effingham, Illinois. He registered for the World War II draft while in Effingham. Paul listed mother Mrs Edna Opal McKinnon of Sonoma, California as his contact and his birthplace as Eskridge, Kansas. He was described as being 5 feet-7 inches in height, weighing 140 lbs with hazel eyes, brown hair and light complexion. Paul signed the registration on 16 October 1940. On 15 February 1943, he enlisted as a private in the U.S.Army at Sacramento, California. Paul was discharged on 08 November 1945. In 1947, he was living at 532 Brown Street in Napa, Claifornia and was employed as a clerk at the U.S.Navy shipyard at Mare Island, California. There Paul met his future wife Margaret Veronica Boyd who was also employed at the shipyard as a clerk. Margaret and Paul lived in Vallejo, California. Paul, 61, of 105 Webster Street, died on a Tuesday. The funeral was held Thursday in Wiggins Funeral Home. Rev Stanley Cornils pastor of the First Baptist church officiated. Pallbearers were H. Haffner, William B McFerris Jr, Edwin D and Larry McKinnon and James Christofins. |

Biography* | Lola G. Shipton Boyd, 1910-1984: Lola was the sixth child born to Frank and Ella Shipton. Four older children, three girls and a boy, were born in Iowa. The fifth, of unknown sex and birthplace, was deceased. The father Frank was born in Jo Davies County, Illinois. The mother Ella was born in Lafayette County, Wisconsin to an Ireland born father (Lola's grandfather) and an England born mother (Lola's grandmother). In 1900 the family was living in Tilden township of Cherokee County, Iowa and the father was operating a farm he owned with mortgage. By 1910, the family was living in a home free of mortgage at 1205 13th Street in Madison's 1st ward, Lake County, South Dakota. Her father Frank was working as a real estate dealer with his own office. In 1920 the family owned a home at 210 Eighth Street also in Madison's 1st ward. Lola's father Frank was working as an insurance agent. In 1930, the family owned an $8,000 house at 202 Fourth Street NE also in Madison's 1st ward. Lola graduated from Madison High School and attended Eastern Normal in Madison for 2-years. After her schooling, she worked as a bookkeeper at J. C. Penney's in Madison for more than 30-yrs. In 1939, Lola worked 52-weeks and earned wages of $660. In 1940 she worked 55-hours the week ending 30 March. About 1940, still living at home with her parents, Lola met her future husband, Donald Boyd, who lived around the corner on Fourth Street. She and Donald were married in October of 1940 and a month later Donald was inducted into the U.S.Army for three years. Lola was a member of Madison Community Hospital Auxiliary, Rebekah Lodge, where she was past noble grand, the Town & Country Garden Club and the Ten_Penney Club. She was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church where she was treasurer for many years. Lola, age 74, died on a Sunday in Sioux Valley Hospital. She was survived by a sister, Dorothy Boyd of Cheyenne, Wyoming and several nieces and nephews. Lola was predeceased by her husband Donald, parents Frank and Ella Mae, brother Wesley, and three sisters: Ethel, Alice and Eunice. Memorials were requested to Grace Episcopal Church in lieu of flowers. Services were held on Thursday at Grace Episcopal Church officiated by the Rev. Stephen Hall. Hallenbeck-Ellsworth Funeral Home was in charge. |

Biography* | Alberta Margaret Hecker Boyd, 1906-1992: Alberta was the fifth of six born to George Hecker and Eva Neff. George, born in Pennsylvania was a house carpenter. Eva was a first generation German American also born in Pennsylvania. In 1910, the family lived in a house free of mortgage on Saint Mary's Street in Carrolltown, Cambria County. Alberta had two older brothers and two older sisters all born in Pennsylvania. By 1920 another sister had been added. Alberta left home and moved to Wyandotte, Wayne County, Michigan. There she met Henry Orvin Boyd and in 1928 they got married. At that time Alberta was working as a clerk. The wedding was performed by the Rev. M. J. Mee before witnesses Winifred Owens and Edward Nultemeier, who was Henry's brother-in-law. In 1930, Orvin and Alberta were renting at 334 Sycamore in Wyandott for $38/month. They had a radio.In 1940 they were renting at 94 Walnut Street for $35/month. Later in 1940, Henry, Alberta and their two children moved to California and were living with the Nultemeier's in Richmond, Salano County. Alberta and Henry both claimed Social Scurity benfits on 03 February 1969. In 1977 they were living in Cerritos, Los Angeles, County. When Henry died in 1990, they had been married for 61-years. Alberta, 86, died on a Wednesday. |

Biography* | Edward Philip Nultemeier, 1899-1952: Edward was the oldest of six children born to first generation German-American parents. His farmer father William was born in Minnesota, his mother Emma in Wisconsin. In 1910, the family rented a farm in Riverside township, Brown County, South Dakota. They moved to North Dakota in 1906-or-7 and in 1910 owned a mortgaged farm in Township 133/Range 84 of Morton County. By 1917, the family had moved to Raleigh, Grant County, North Dakota. Edward registered for the WWI draft on 12 September 1917 and was described as being of medium height and build with gray eyes and light brown hair. He was living with his parents and was working on the family farm. In 1920, the parents were still in Grant County but Edward, with an 8th grade education, was not with them. At his 1925 marriage he was living in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. By 1926 Edward and wife Mary Frances Boyd were in Wyandotte, Michigan - south of Detroit but in the same county. They were living at 181 Oak. Edward was working as a welder. Mary was working as a clerk at Reno Drug Company. In 1928, they were living at 142 Sycamore and Edward was working as a driver. By 1930, they were renting at 840 Oak Street for $40/mo and Edward was working as a chauffeur for a taxicab company. His wife Mary's 1st cousin, Regina Mulvhill, a public school teacher, was livng with them. In 1933, while living in apartment #5 at 3028 1st Street, Edward was working for the DW&T Transit Company. By 1938, the family had moved to Richmond, Solano County, California and were living at 450 5th Street. Edward was employed as a sheet metal worker. By 1940, they had moved to Vallejo, also in Solano County, and were renting at 327½ Kentucky for $30/month. Edward was employed as a sheet metal worker at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. In 1939, he worked 52-weeks and earned wages of $1,000. Mary's brother Ronald Boyd was lodging with them. By 1944, the family had moved to 14 Selfridge in Vallejo. In 1948, Edward was still working at the shipyard but as a mechanic. Mary was employed as a clerk at the shipyard. In 1950, Edward as working as a mechanic at the Benicia Arsenal. Edward died on a Sunday at age 52. |
