Biography* | Raymond Edward Castelberg, 1904-1990: One of nine, Raymond was a first generation German-American. In 1910, he was the six child and third son of the eight children living (one child of unknown sex and birth order had died by 1900). His father Jacob was a farmer and first generation Swiss-American born in Minnesota, Raymond's mother Caroline was born in Germany and immigrated circa 1868. Raymond received an 8th grade education. He left home in the mid-1920s and by 1927 was living at 4207 Minnehaha Avenue in Minneapolis, Minnesota and working as a barber for Gust Anderson at 2805 East 42nd. By 1932, Raymond had opened his own barber shop at 3226 East 42nd Street and was living at 4052 22nd Avenue South - a 20-minute walk. In 1937 he married Anna Ryan, both residents of Minneapolis, in a civil ceremony in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota. By 1939, Raymond had taken on a partner, Mrs Frank Broderick, and expanded the business, at the same address, to include a beauty parlor. He and Anna were renting at 631 East 17th Street (a duplex 4-miles from the barber shop) in Minneapolis's 5th ward for $25/month. In 1940, Raymond's mother-in-law Anna Ryan was living with them. He worked 60-hours in the last week in March. Raymond worked 52-weeks in 1939, had no wages and had no other income. By 1941, Raymond and Anna had moved to 3329 47th Avenue South which was 2-miles closer to the shop. In 1942 he registered for the World War II draft. Raymond was 5-feet/8-inches tall, weighed 205 paounds, with blue eyes, brown hair and ruddy complexion. He retired in 1969. Anna died in 1977. In 1987, Raymond was living at 3300 Minnehaha Avene, Apt.111. In 1989 he moved to the Mount Olivet Careview Home at 5517 Lyndale Avenue South, Apt.209. Raymond E Castelberg, 86, died on 14 September 1900 at Fairview Southdale hospital in Edina. Special niece JoAnn O'Neil of 219 W 47th Stret, Minneapolis was informant on the death cert. Cause of death was coronary ischemia (sudden), arteriosclerosis and cancer of the prostate. Raymond was attended, since 01 January 1985, by physician Jan H. Tanghe (MD) of 6545 France Avenue, Edina, Minnesota. He was survived by a brother Allen, a sister Wilma Breutzman both of Wisconsin, nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Anna Ryan. The funeral was held on Monday 17 September at Saint Albert the Great Catholic church, 2900 E 29th Street. White Funeral Home of 2730 Hennepin Avenue was in charge. NOTE: Raymond's parents spelled their surname Castleberg. About the time Raymond left home in the mid1920s, he began spelling his surname Castelberg. In the 1942 draft registration his name is listed as Castleberg but he signed as Castelberg. Two brothers changed the spelling of their surname also. |

Biography* | Charles Edward O'Neil, 1884-1971: Usually listed as Edward until about 1930 with one exception: his WWI draft registration in 1917/18. His father Charles was a first generation Irish-American born in New York. His mother, Sarah McDonald, was a first generation Irish-American born in Wisconsin. In 1880, the parents were living in Winfield township, Sauk County, Wisconsin. In 1900, Sarah was living in Orlan township, Lake County, South Dakota with four sons. The other three of her seven children were deceased. The father was not listed with the family. The oldest son was born in Wisconsin. Edward, the next in age, was born in South Dakota as were the remaining two. Edward received a 4th grade education. In 1910, the mother Sarah was listed as divorced. Edward is also living in Orlan township and is married to Martha a first generation Norwegian-American. When Edward registers in the WWI draft as Charles Edward O'Neil, the couple was living in Madison, Lake County and he was self employed buying junk. He was described as being of medium height and build with blue eyes and brown hair. By 1920, Edward and Martha have two daughters. Edward was a merchant of soft drinks. He and Martha are divorced shortly thereafter and Edward married Estella Ryan circa 1923 . Shortly after this married they moved to Minneapolis. By 1930, now listed as Charles, and Estelle, were renting for $35/month, at 3733 24th Avenue, Minneapolis and he was working as a self-employed painter. His first wife Martha was still living in Madison, South Dakota with the two daughters. By 1934 they were living at 4231 33rd Avenue S and Charles was working at (or operating) a restaurant at 629 Washington Avenue. By 1940, Charles owned and operated a tavern in Minneapolis. He was renting at 110 East 25th Street in the 5th ward for $38/month. He and Stella now had two children of their own and they also had two lodgers. In 1942, Charles registered for the World War 11 draft. The family lived at 4011 Stevens South in Minneapolis and he worked at the Irish Tavern, 114 South Washington. Charles was 5-ft/9½in tall, weighed 176-pounds with blue eyes, gray hair and light complexion. He had a scar on his upper left lip. In 1946, Charles worked at the Marquette Bar, 205 Marquette and the family lived at 4008 Wentworth Avenue. Charles E, 86, of 219 West 47th Street, Minneapolis, died on a Monday at t he Willows, 625 East 16th Street, Minneapolis. His wife Estella, of the same residence, was informant on the death cert. Cause of death was cardiac mechanism death (minutes), ASHP (years), surgery for prostate cancer (longstanding), hypermephionis (several years ago). He was attended, since January 1970, by physician John W Laurance? (MD). Charles was survived by wife Estella, one son and one daughter, three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The two daughters by his first wife were not mentioned. The funeral was held on Thursday at the Church of the Visitation. White Funeral Home of 2730 Hennepin Avenue, Minneapolis was in charge. |
