Biography* | Ruth Sara Lyon Laivell, 1912-2001: In 1920, Ruth was the youngest of three and the only daughter. The family lived in Hennepin County, Minnesota. They moved into Minneapolis when Ruth was a young girl and lived at 3617 Pleasant Avenue in the 13th ward. In 1930 the house was valued at $8,000. Her father John was a physician and surgeon. Ruth attended high school in Minneapolis and later attended the University of Minnesota for three years. Her father died in 1933. In 1937, Ruth was married to William Laivell in Minneapolis4.The marriage took place in the bride's home. Ruth's brother Deter gave her away. Only immediate family members were present. Ruth wore the same gown that her older sister Mrs Myrle (Josiah) Hartzell was married in. And Myrle was the bride's only attendant. The gown was decorated with an antique gold brooch that had belonged to her great-great grandfather and worn by Ruth's mother at her wedding. The groom's bro John Laivell was best man. Ushers were Carlyle Tingale and Gene Gilbert. Helene G Hermand sang and was accompanied by Mrs George Green. Dr. Richard Campbell Raines read the service in the living room. A reception for friends and relatives was held at the home in the evening. The newlyweds are going to Chicago, Illinois for two weeks. They will live in Willmar, Minnesota afterwards. Guests were M/M George Wybrant of Dubuque, Iowa, M/M Bertram Burridge of Galina, Illinois, Dr Charles Sturdevant of Lincoln, Nebraska, P. H. Laivell and Miss Dolores of Chatfield, M/M George Muran of Mankato, M/M Millard Derrick of Willmar, and Mrs J. S. Morgan and son Jesse of Birmingham, Alabama By 1940, William. Ruth and two children were renting at 909 North Kenwood Avenue in the 1st ward of Austin Minnesota for $38/month, In 1941, they lived for a time in Algoma, Iowa. They also lived for a time in Martin County, Minnesota. By 1950, they were back in Austin, Minnesota living at 1317 Alleghany. Ruth Sara Laivell, 89, of 27 Brand Avenue, Faribault, Minnesota died on a Wednesday at Pleasant Manor Nursing Home in Faribault. A daughter was informant on the death cert. Cause of death was bladder cancer (2-months). She was attended by Dr. George Wagne (MD) of 924 NE 1st Street. Ruth was survived by two daughters, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband William in 1973, a brother and a sister. Ruth was cremated at Woodlawn Hills Crematory, Mankato, Minnesota. A private graveside service was held later. Parker Kohl Funeral Home of Faribault was in charge. |

Biography* | Elmer Eli Paavola, 1917-1997: Elmer was the second of seven children and the oldest son. He received an 8th grade education. His father Eli was a first generation Finnish-American. Elmer's mother Hulda was born in Finland. The family lived in Deer Creek township of Otter Tail County, Minnesota a predominately Finnish township. In 1930 census, on the sheet the family was enumerated, 97 of 100 people were born in Finland or were first generation. In 1935, Elmer was with the family but was still a resident of Ottertail County. In 1940, he lived in Park City, Stillwater County and was employed as a laborer repairing railroad track. The last week of March in 1940 Elmer worked 48-hours. In 1939, he worked 24-weeks and was paid $225 in wages. Later, Elmer was a forklift operator for Butler Manufacturing. He was a lifetime member of Star Spangled Banner VFW Post 1149 and a member of American Legion Post Number 1. Elmer, 80, of 2507 15th Avenue South, Minneapolis, died on a Tuesday at Abbott-Northwestern hosp, 800 East 28th Street, Minneapolis. His daughter was informant on the death cert. Cause of death was sepsis and aspiration pneumonia. He was attended by Dr. Edward T. L. Robson of Bloomington Lake Clinic in Minneapolis. Elmer was survived by one daughter, one son, sisters Nelmi Hentiata and Dolores Wormas, brother Alvin (Mary Lou) Paavola, many nieces and nephews and friends Larry Lillemoe and John & Mary Arouni. He was preceded by his wife Ethel, parents Hulda and Eli, brothers Marvin and Milton and sister Irja. The funeral was held on Friday at Bradshaw (McDivitt-Hauge), 3131 Minnehaha South. |

Biography* | Francille L. Bassett Scott, 1917-1994: Francille was one of ten children. Her parents were first generation American-French Canadians born in Minnesota. Francille grew up on a farm near Currie in Murray county, Minnesota and attended Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic grade school and Fulda high school where she recieved a 10th grade education. After her 1946 marriage, Francille and her husband farmed between Fulda and Iona for 12-years. They retired in 1958 and bought the general store in Wirock which they operated until 1973. They lived in Wirock until 1989, then moved to Slayton Manor Nursing Home. Later they moved to Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda. After Francille's husband died in 1991, she moved to Mala Strana Health Care Center in New Prague. Francille was a member of Saint Gabriel's Catholic church, the Fulda Council of Catholic Women, the Fulda American Legion Auxiliary, and the Murray County Extension Club. Francille, 77, of 1001 Columbus Avenue North, New Prague, Minnesota, died on a Monday at Mala Strana. A daughter was informant on the death cert. Cause of death was cancer of the colon and river metastasis. She was attended by Dr. Carl E. Burkland (MD) of the Parkview Medical Clinic in New Prague. Francille was survived by four-daughters, a sister Ursula Daly of Denver, Colorado, three-brothers Raymond and Gerald of Currie and Colbert of Rushmore and 9-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Vance on 23 Oct 1991, one sister and 4-brothers. The funeral was held on Thursday at Saint Gabriel's, Fulda with the Rev Eugene Egan officiating. Totzke Funeral Home of Fulda was in charge. |
