Biography* Johannah "Josie" Noonan Culver, 1886-1980:
In 1900, Johannah was living with her parents on the family farm in Springwater township, Rock County, Minnesota and going to school. In 1910, she was living with her mother in Luverne's North ward, Rock County, Minnesota and working as a dressmaker. At the end of 1919, Johannah, 33, was still single, living with her mother and a dressmaker. In 1930, she and husband David were renting a farm in Lake County, South Dakota.

When Johannah died in 1980 at age 94, she was living in Valrica, Florida.

Biography* Mary E. Noonan Scott, 1890-1976:
In 1900, Mary, a first generation Irish-American, was living with her parents on the family farm in Stillwater township, Rock County, Minnesota. She attended school in Luverne and later taught school there. In 1910, Mary was living with her widowed mother in Luverne's North ward. By the end of 1919, she was married and living with her husband Claude on a rented farm in Mound township, Rock County. By 1930, they owned a farm in Iona township, Murray County. Mary and Claude farmed near Luverne and Iona for 33 years. In 1946, they retired from farming and moved to Fulda. Claude died in 1960. Mary was a member of Saint Gabriel's Catholic Church and its Rosary group. Circa 1973, she became a resident of Maple Lawn Nursing Home at 400 7th Street NorthEast in Fulda.

Mary, 85, of Maple Lawn Nursing Home, died on a Tuesday at Murray County hospital. Informant on the death cert was son Vance Scott of rural Iona. Cause of death was hypostatic pneumonia (5-days) and influenza (12-days). Mary was attended by physician Dean D. Nywall (MD) of Slayton. She was survived by children Vance Scott of Iona; Ethel (Ben) Riesselman of Cottage Grove, Minnesota; Verna (Raymond) Klenken of Wilmont, Minnesota; and Walter Scott of Iona; one-sister Joanna Culver of Englewood, Florida. Mary was preceded by her husband Claude, an infant son and two sisters. The funeral was held on Friday at Saint Gabriel's with Rev Donald Olson officiating.Mrs Mary (Leo) Hogan was organist. Pallbearers were Charles Gerber, Vincent Crowley, Leonard Biren, Orville Jorgenson, Raymond Paulzine and Clarence Johlfs. Husted Funeral Home, Fulda was in charge.

Biography* Michael T. Bergin, 1882-1950:
Michael's parents were both first generation Irish-Americans born in Wisconsin. He recieved an 8th grade education. In 1900, the oldest of the nine living children (eleven had been born), Michael was working on his father's farm in Springwater township, Rock County, Minnesota. He had three-younger sisters and five-younger brothers all living on the home farm. By 1910, Michael was married to Nellie Noonan and they were renting a farm of their own in Palisades township, Minnehaha County, South Dakota. And by the end of 1919, they owned a farm with mortgage in the same township. Between 1935 and 1940, Michael and Nellie moved to Springwater township in Rock County, Minnesota. Their house there was valued at $1,500 in 1940 and was occupied by Michael, his wife Nellie and a hired-hand.

Michael, 68, died on a Sunday at the farm in Springwater township. Michael's son Russell was informant on the death cert. Michael had been outdoors doing chores and was stricken as he reached the house on his return. He collapsed and died shortly thereafter. Cause of death was coronary occlusion (sudden) and hypertension. He was attended by physician John M. Hermanson (MD) of Valley Springs, South Dakota. Michael was survived by his wife Nellie, son Russell near Sherman, two-daughters Lois (Merle) Bly of Garretson and Lucille (Ot) Rovek of Sioux Falls, seven-grandchildren, three-sisters Mrs Loyd Larson and Mrs Norm Locke both of Garretson and Mrs Maggie Mitchell of Jasper, four-brothers Tom, Will and Emmett of Jasper and John F of Pipestone. A daughter Mary preceded him. The funeral was held on Thursday at St Rose's in Garretson with burial in Luverne. Undertaker L. R. Hudgel of Garretson was in charge.

Biography* Mary Ellen Bergin, 1907-1933:
Mary was the eldest of four children with one younger brother. She was raised on a farm in Palisades township, Minnehaha County, South Dakota. Mary was a graduate of Garretson (South Dakota) High School and Nettleton College in Sioux Falls. Circa 1927 she became a bookkeeper at Beach Printing Company in Sioux Falls. By 1930 Mary was rooming at 501 North Minnesota in Sioux Falls with James and Nellie Corcoran. She resigned on 23 June 1932 due to poor health.

Mary, 25, died at Southwestern Minnesota Sanatorium3 in Worthington township, Nobles County, Minnesota on a Saturday, one week short of her 26th birthday. Cause of death was pulmonary tuberculosis (12-months) and tubercular enteritis (6-months). She was attended by physician W. P. Ross (MD) of Worthington. Mary was survived by her parents, brother Russell and sister Lois, both at home, and sister Mrs Ernest Reese of Sioux Falls. The funeral was held Monday at Saint Rose's Catholic Church in Garretson with Rev H. W. Wulf officiating. Pall bearers: Bernard and Vincent Locke, Paul Brennan, Homer Damman, Emil Suurmeyer(sic) and Glen Lyons. The F. C. C. Smith Funeral Home of Luverne, Minnesota was in charge.

Biography* Lois L. Bergin Bly, 1918-2011:
Lois was the fourth and last child born to Mike & Nellie (Noonan) Bergin and their third daughter. She was raised on a farm in Palisades township northeast of Garretson. Lois attended rural elementary schools and graduated from Garretson High School in 1936. She married Merle Bly in 1937 and they farmed in Red Rock Township until 1948. In 1954, Lois and Merle moved west of Garretson to a farm in rural Edison Township. They lived on that farm until moving to Palisade Manor in 2007. Lois was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Faith Circle.

Lois, 92, of Garretson, died on a Saturday at Palisade Manor in Garretson. She was survived by three sons, two daughters, ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Lois was preceded by her husband in 1997, her parents, one brother Russell and two sisters Mary & Lucille. The funeral was held on Thursday at Zion Lutheran church. Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson was in charge.

He was a member of Palisades Lutheran Church and Zion Lutheran Church, served on the church council, and was a member of the Mr. and Mrs. Club and the Moose Lodge.

Myrle, 81, died on a Tuesday at Sioux Falls Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He was survived by his wife Lois, three sons, two daughters, 10 grandchildren, a brother Sam of Valley Springs and a sister Rena Ideker of Garretson. In that census, David was living with his widowed mother and three siblings, Mabel, James and Orlin in Indian Creek township, Story County, Iowa. By 1910, David's mother Jennie had remarried to farmer William Oxley. David and Orlin were still with their mother and step-father living in Indian Creek. David probably married Johannah in Rock County, Minnesota but by 1930, they were renting and farming in Lake County, South Dakota. David was a veteran of WWI.

Biography* Claude Harold Scott, 1893-1960:
Born in Minnesota, the fifth of six children and the second son to parents born in Illinois, Claude was living with his parents on their rented farm in Luverne township, Rock County, Minnesota and going to school in 1900. By 1910 the family had moved to Clinton township in the same county to another rented farm. Claude recieved all of his education in Luverne schools. In 1917, when he registered for the WWI draft, Claude was married with wife and child, claimed no exemptions from the draft and was described as being of medium height and build with blue eyes and brown hair. He signed the registration on 05 June. By 1920, Claude was renting his own farm in Mound township. And by 1930, he and Mary owned a farm in Iona township of Murray County. In 1940, their home was valued at $2,000 and Claude worked 72-hours the last week of March. They farmed in the Luverne and Iona areas for 33-years. They then moved to Fulda where Claude was a real estate salesman.

Claude, age 67, died suddenly at home in Fulda on a Saturday. His son Vance was informant on the death cert. Cause of death was acute coronary thrombosis. Claude was attended by physician Fukkar(?) of Fulda. He was survived by wife Mary, four children Vance and Walter Sott both of Iona, Mrs Ben (Ethel) Riesselman of Glenwood, Mrs Raymond (Verna) Klenken of Wilmont, 17-grandchildren, two-great-grandchildren, siblings Russell Scott and Mrs Bertha Steen both of Bremerton, Washington, Mrs Goldye Trunnell of Luverne and Mrs Ione McDowell of Beaver Creek, Minnesota. His parents, one brother and an infant son preceded Claude in death.The funeral was held on Wednesday at Saint Gabriel's Catholic church with Rev Paul Hodapp officiating. Pallbearers were Charles Sauer, Clarence Johlfs, George Behr, Mark Biren, Conrad Schwab and Ed Jorgensen. Undertaker Richard R Rousse of Fulda was in charge.

Biography* Vance R. "Kelly" Scott, 1916-1991:
Vance was the second of five children and the second son. He grew up in the Lismore, Lake Wilson and Fulda areas. In 1920, the family was farming in Mound township of Rock County and by 1930 were living in Iona township in Murray County. He received an 8th grade education. Kelly served in the military during World War II, entering the U.S. Army on 22 March 1941 at age 25. He was discharged on 17 November 1945. After their 1946 marriage, Kelly and Francille bought a farm between Fulda and Iona and farmed for about 13-years. They then retired from farming and bought a General Store in Wirock which they operated until closing it in 1973. Kelly also owned and operated a feed grainder. After the store closing, he sold feed for 4X4 and Peets Feeds for several years. Also, over the years, he worked as mechanic out of his garage. Kelly was a member of Saint Gabriel's Catholic church. He also was a member of Fulda American Legion Post 318, of Iona VFW Post 9680 and of the Wirock Saddle Club. The family owned a cabin on Lake Shetek.

Vance Robert Scott, 75, of Route 3/Box 57D, Iona township, Murray County, suffered a heart attack on a Wednesday. He was rushed to Murray County Memoriall Hospital in Slayton but was d.o.a. (dead on arrival). A daughter was informant on the death cert. Cause of death was sudden cardiac death (minutes). Kelly was attended by physician Elton G. Wing (MD) of 2040 Juniper Avenue, Slayton. He was survived by his wife Francille, four-daughters, nine-grandchildren, siblings Ethel (Ben) Riesselman of Cottage Grove, Verna (Raymond) Klenken of Wilmont and Walter (Donna) Scott of Slayton. Kelly was perceded in death by his parents and an older brother. The funeral was held at Saint Gabriel's church on Saturday with the Rev Gregory Leif officiating. The organist was Mary Ann Boom and Sheila Crowley was the soloist. Pallbearers were Glenn Crowley, Bill Crowley, Ken Bassett, George Hemmingsen, Gary Klenken and Bernie Riesselman. Kelly was buried full military honors conducted by Iona VFW Post 9680. Hustad-Totzke Funeral Home of 602 North Saint Paul Avenue, Fulda was in charge.

Biography* Verna May Scott Klenken, 1921-2007:
Born the fourth of five and the second daughter, Verna was living with her parents and siblings in Iona township, Murray County in 1930 when she was 8-years-of-age. She attended rural schools near Lake Wilson and also in the Fulda area and by 1940 had finished high-school. After her 1943 marriage, Verna and husband Raymond operated a farm one-half-mile-south of Wilmont in Nobles County until November 1978 when they retired and moved into Wilmont. Verna was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic church and the WCCW. She also belonged to Wilmont Senior Citizens. Verna enjoyed quilting, playing cards, gardening and flowers. She also loved baking and canning.

Verna Klenken, 85, of Wilmont, died on a Sunday at Avera McKinnon hospital in Sioux Falls. She was survived by three children, seven-grandchildren, ten-great-grandchildren, one brother Wally (Donna) Scott of Slayton and one sister Ethel Riesselman of Cottage Grove. Verna was preceded in death by her parents, husband Raymond, two sons and one brother Kelly. The funeral was held on Wednesday at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Wilmont with the Rev Gerald Kosse officiating. Dingman and Sons Funeral Home was in charge. Blessed Be Her Memory.

Biography* Raymond F. "Tuffy" Klenken, 1916-2001:
Raymond was the younger of two sons born to Ben Klenken and Katherine Schaefer. His mother died in the 1920's and by 1930, his father had remarried and the family had moved to Bloom township. Raymond attended Our Lady of Good Counsel (OLGC) school in Wilmont and completed 8th grade. After his 1943 marriage, he and Verna farmed one-half-mile-south of Wilmont. In November 1978 they retired and moved into Wilmont. Tuffy was a member of OLGC church and the Catholic Order of Forresters for over 50-years. He served on the Wilmont Elevator Board for over 15-years. Tuffy enjoyed bowling, wrestling, boxing and watching Minnesota Twins Baseball.

Raymond F. "Tuffy" Klenken, 85, of Wilmont, died on a Sunday at Cross Roads Care Center in Worthington. He was survived by his wife Verna, three children, seven-grandchildren and six-great-grandchildren. Tuffy was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Annabel Klenken, two sons and a brother Joseph Klenken. The funeral was held on Wednesday at OLGC Catholic church in Wilmont with Rev Gerald Kosse officiating.
