John was the first of five children born to Daniel Noonan and Nettie Johnson. In 1900, The family was living at 2226 19th Avenue South in Minneapolis 11the ward.

the following paragraph was excerpted from The Minneapolis Times, Minneapolis, Minnesota - 03 June 1903.

John Noonan, a ladderman on the company No. 3 was run over yesterday, while at a fire, by engine No. 5, and sustained injuries from which he died in the St. Mary's hospital yesterday afternoon. The truck company of which Noonan was a member was responding to a still alarm at the corner of Fourth Street and Fifteenth Avenue South. The truck was the first piece of apparatus on the scene and the captain had gone into the burning house. As Noonan came running up the steps, he called to him to go back and get a chemical extinguisher, which was on the truck. The fireman went back to the truck, which was drawn up on the other side of the street, got the fire extinguisher, and started to recross the street. He stepped directly in front of the leaders of No. 5 steamer, which was just pulling into position. Before the driver could slow down, the horses had trampled the unfortunate man, and the heavy engine had passed over his abdomen, inflicting deadly internal injuries. The injured man was hurried to the hospital, but died a few minutes after arrival. Noonan was but 22 years of age, and joined the Department April 3rd. He was married.

John's funeral was held on Friday at Holy Rosary church. Attendees included his aunt and uncle, M/M Mart Williams, of Luverne. John was buried with fire department honors.
