Biography* | Margaret E. Watts Laivell Newbern Merling, 1913-2009: Margaret was an only child. She was born in Minneapolis to a father Robert born in Pennsylvania and a mother Neva born in Wisconsin. In 1920, they lived in a mortgaged home at 4837 Garfield Avenue in the 13th ward of Minneapolis. Her father was a manager of wholesale hides. In 1930 the family was renting, for $85/month, at 805 Seward Street in the 4th ward of Evanston, Illinois. Her father was a sales agent of toys. Margaret attended the University of Minnesota for two-years. In 1937 she married John Laivell on a Saturday evening in the ballroom of the Leamington Hotel in Minneapolis. The Rev Morris C. Robinson, Pastor of Grace Presbyterian church, officiated. Mrs Ruth (W. K.) Laivell, sister-in-law of the groom, was matron of honor. Other attendants were Mrs Bess (A. N.) Justus and Misses Ardene Berg and Carolyn Gogsdell. The groom's brother William Laivell was best man and ushers were Andrew N Jusrus, Henry P Albrecht and Rober B Pelton. A reception followed. Music was provided by harpist Miss Hope Hausel and singer Mrs Harold L Schaefer. After a trip to Los Angeles the newly weds will be at 2552 Garfield Avenue (the groom's parent's home) by 25 October. The following year they were living with her brother-in-law William Laivell and mother-in-law Stella Laivell in apartment 203 at 2554 Garfield Avenue. In 1940, Margaret and John were renting, for $40/month, at 2003 Sheridan Street South in the 4th ward. By 1942, they had moved to San Bernadino, California and were living at 2305 Arrowhead Avenue. By 1947 they had moved to Pasadena and were living at 82 W Claveras. In 1949, her husband John and her father Robert Watts formed a partnership, Watt-Laivell General Insurance, at 3695 Market Street in Riverside. By 1951 they had moved to 4705 Westmoreland Court and Margaret was working as an office secretary at Smith-McMahan. By 1952, she was also working at Watts-Laivell. By 1955, she and John and moved to 4705 Rosewood Place. After husband John Laivell died in 1965, Margaret married twice more, outliving both of them as well. She continued to operate the Watts-Laivell Insurance Company. Margaret was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity for over 65 years. She loved to travel and was a member of the WBCCI Airstream Travel Club for many years. Margaret Merling, 95, died at home on a Friday. She was survived by three daughters, five-stepdaughters, seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held on February 21, 2009 at Harvest Christian Fellowship, 6115 Arlington Avenue, Riverside. |

Biography* | Phyllis L. Yelocan Jones, 1920-1989: Phyllis, a first generation Candian-American, was the middle child of three daughters. Her father Adolph, a carpenter, was a first generation Austrian-American born in Minnesota. When he was a child German was spoken in the home. Phyllis's mother Alice was born in Canada. When Phyllis was born the family lived at 1521 7 Avenue North in Great Falls. She was raised and educated in Great Falls graduating from Great Falls High School. In 1940, the family owned their house worth $2,000. It was a located on Route 1 outside of Great Falls on a farm. After her 1941 marriage, Phyllis and her husband farmed on the Dupuyer area in Pondera County retiring in 1982 to Great Falls. Phyllis, 68, of 26-20th Street SW of Great Falls, died on a Sunday at a Great Falls hospital after an extended illness. She was survived by her husband, daughters Linda Knapp of Spokane, Washington and Julie Stokes of Shelby, Montana, sons Ron of Dupuyer, Montana and Jerry of Conrad, Montana, sister Shirley Yelocan Lawlor of Great Falls, ten-grandchildren, four-step-grandchildren, five-great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild. O'Connor's Funeral Home was in charge. |
