Biography* | Stella Kirtley Laivell, 1880-1944: Stella and her twin sister Estelle were the fourth and fifth of six children and the two youngest of three daughters. Both parents were born in Kentucky. In 1880, the family was farming in Edmonson County. In 1900, they were renting in Russellville, Logan County about 60-miles southwest. Stella was educated at Logan College in Kentucky. The father Paschal was working as a machine servicing agent. He died early in the 1900s and the mother and the chidlren moved to Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama about 1902. In 1906, Stella, living with her mother at 928 Alabama Street, was married to William T. Laivell by the Rev Jas E. Coyle, Pastor of Saint Paul's Catholic church. The couple left the following day for Montgomery, Alabama to live where Thomas was a represenatative of International Harvester Company. By 1909 they returned to Birmingham and lived with Stella's mother at the Alabama Street address. By 1920, William and Stella had bought the home and her mother continued to live with them. Stella's mother died in 1924. By 1930 they were living in a $11,000 house in Minneapolis at 4936 Newton Avenue South which they owned. Stella's husband William died in 1933. In 1937 she was living with son John in Apartment 203 at 2554 Garfield Avenue. In 1938, Stella moved to Long Beach, Los Angeles, California and lived at 1162 East Second. The following year she was living with her twin sister Estelle Morgan at 1014 East 1st Street. They continued to live together for the rest of Stella's life. Next at 3800 East Ocean Blvd and finally at 172 Nieto Avenue, Stella, 64, died at Seaside Memorial hospital in Long Beach on a Saturday after a nine-day stay. Her son John of 3025 E Street in San Bernadino, California was informant on the death cert. Stella was attended in her hospital stay by Dr Burn Chafee from the Professional Building in Long Beach. Cause of death was mesenteric thrombosis causing gangrene of portion of small intestines (24-hours), carcinoma of transverse colon; findings of operation performed on November 4th: partial obstruction of transverse colon due to carcinoma. Remains were cremated 14 Nov 1944 at Long Beach Crematory, embalmer was Ray Stricklin of Mottell's Mortuary, Long Beach. Certifier Frank W Stewart (MD). Stella's sister Estelle was buried with her in 1959. NOTE: Information in the death cert does not agree with another source. Biography* | William Kirtley Laivell, 1908-1973: The eldest of two sons, William and family were living with his widowed maternal grandmother at 1028 Alabama Street in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama's 9th ward in 1910. In 1920, they were living at 928 Alabama Street. By 1930, the family had moved to 4936 Newton Avenue South in the 13th ward of Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. William completed two-years of college. In 1936, William was working as a salesman at International Harvester Company. The following year he was living in Willmar, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota. William married Ruth Lyon in Minneapolis in 1937. In 1939 he earned $2,100 and had other income. In 1940, William, Ruth and two children were renting, for $38/month, at 909 Kenwood Avenue in the 1st ward of Austin in Mower County, Minnesota. Later that year he registered for the World War II draft. William was 5'-7'' tall, weighed 140 pounds, had hazel eyes, gray hair and a light complexion. On the registration form his next of kin is listed as International Harvester Company, 23 6th Avenue, Mason City, Iowa. William signed as W. K. Laivell on 16 Oct 1940. On 05 March 1941 his residence listed on the registration form was changed to 220 N. McPherson, Algona, Iowa. In 1949, they wee living in Martin County, Minnesota. In 1950, they were living at 1317 Alleghany in Austin, Minnesota. William was managing a retail implement firm which he owned. He had worked 60-hours in the past week. Later he became a salesman at automobile dealership Fordtown. William, 64, of 311 Oakland Avenue West, Austin, died at Saint Olaf hospital in Austin on a Monday. Wife Ruth was the informant on the death cert. In addition to his widow, William was survived by two daughters, and four grandchildren. Cause of death was ventricular fibrillation (45-minutes), arteriosclerotic heart disease (years) and arteriosclerosis. William was attended by physician John Hagen (MD) of Austin Clinic, 101-14th Street NW. Services were held Thursday at the mortuary chapel with Rev Warren Nyberg officiating. Memorials were preferred. Jordan Mortuary of 209 Second Avenue NW, Austin was in charge. |

Biography* | John Paschal Laivell, 1912-1965: John was the younger of two sons, both of whom were born in Alabama. John's middle name was the given name of his mother Stella's father. In 1920, the family was living at 928 Alabama Street, Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama. By 1930, they had moved to Minneapolis and were living at 4936 Newton Avenue South in the 13th ward. John completed three-years of college. In 1936, still living at home with his brother and their widowed mother, John was working in advertising for International Harvester Company. In 1937, he was renting Apartment 203 at 2554 Garfield Avenue and working in sales. John's mother was living with him. By the following year, he had married Margaret Watts and they were living in the apartment on Garfield. His mother had moved to Los Angeles. In 1940, John and Margaret were renting, for $40/month, at 2003 Sheridan Street South in the 4th ward. He worked 48-hours the week-ending 30 March. In 1939, John worked 52-weeks, earned $1,600 in wages and had other income. By 1942, they had moved to San Bernadino, Calfornia and were living at 2305 Arrowhead Avenue. John continued to work as a salesman but by 1947 was working as an insurance agent. The family had moved to Altadena and were living at 82 West Claveras. In 1949, John entered into partnership with his father-in-law Robert G Watts doing business as Watts-Laivell General Insurance. The business was located at 3695 Market Street in Riverside. In 1951, John and Margaret were living at 4705 Westmoreland Court in Riverside and in 1955 at 4705 Rosewood Place. John, 53, of 801 University Drive, Riverside, died on a Friday. He was survived by his wife Margaret, three-daughters, three-grandchildren, his father-in-law Robert Watts of Riverside and brother William Laivell of Minneapolis. Acheson & Graham Funeral Directors, of 4th & Main, were in charge. |
