Biography* | Thomas Delaney, 18226-1905: Thomas immigrated to the United States in the early 1850s and was naturalized by 1857. He was living in Carimona township, Fillmore County, Minnesota in 1857 and farmed there the remainder of his life. By 1870, Thomas had acquired real property of $1,500 and personal property of $1,200. He marked a last will and testament on 26 August 1898, appointing his wife Catherine as executrix. The mark was witnessed by John T. Healy and Patrick Flynn, both of Carimona. Thomas, 83, died at home on a Saturday. He been ill for a year. Cause of death was heart trouble. He was attended by Dr. G. A. Lane (MD) of Preston. Thomas was survived by his wife, two-daughters and one-son. The funeral was held on Tuesday at Saint John's with the Rev O'Connor of Wykoff officiating. Fully sixty teams were in the funeral procession to the gravesite. Undertaker A. Healy of Preston was in charge. Thomas' will was approved for probate on 8 Nov 1916. |

The first footprint of his found in the U.S. was in 1860 when he was living in a hotel in Independence, Buchanan County, Iowa and working there as a cook. Michael enlisted in the U. S. Army on 29 March 1862 with the rank of Private. He was mustered into Company A of the 21st Regiment of the Iowa Infantry on the 12th of June. The regiment moved to Saint Louis, Missouri on September 16th |

Biography* | John Joseph Laivell, 1851-1924: John was the only known child of Mike Laivell and Mary Judge. The father Mike died when John was still an infant and Mary then married James Walsh. Two Walsh children were born before the family emigrated Ireland for Canada in 1864. Eleven years later, in 1875, John Laivell moved to Fillmore County, Minnesota, U.S.A. and settled on a farm in Fountain township. The Walsh family, which now included three more children born in Canada, moved to Minnesota as well and settled in Olmsted and Fillmore Counties. In 1876 John married Ellen McCabe and they produced five children on their own. In 1887, John gave up farming and moved for the last time to Chatfield City where he operated a saloon. By 1900, they owned their home free of mortgage at the corner of 5th and Main Streets. By 1910, John was retired. John died at home on a Thursday at age 73. Cause of death was an acute general infection of nine days. He was attended by Dr C. W. Woodruff. John was survived by wife Ellen, sons William of Minneapolis, Patrick Henry and Frank and daughter Mrs E. P. Crowley of Chatfield; seven grandchildren plus half-siblings Thomas, James and Patrick Walsh, Mrs Bessie Gilchrist and Mrs Callan. The funeral was held on Saturday at Saint Mary's Catholic church with the Rev Kelly of Winona officiating. John's estate was approved for probate on 18 September 1924 at Preston, Fillmore County. |

Biography* | Peter O'Hara, 1825-1889: We don't know when Peter came to the United States but in 1860 he and his family are farming in Fox township, Elk County, Pennsylvania. Peter has $2,500 of real estate and $600 of personal property. In 1870, Peter was living in Preston Village, Fillmore county, Minnesota. By 1880, he had moved to Lanesboro. Peter's first wife Bridget Trainor died in 1869. In 1882, he married Eliza Madden 25-years younger. Peter signed a will on 10 Mar 1887, listing his second wife Elizabeth McCabe and grandson Peter O'Hara Jr. as heirs. Thomas Scanlan, of Carrolton, was named executor and the signing was witnessed by W. B. Anderson and Robt Donald. A codicil to the will was signed on 16 Apr 1889, adding son Owen (Peter Jr.'s father) and daughter Mary Toomey as heirs. This signing was witnessed by M. Scanlon and O. G. Wall, both of Lanesboro. Peter died on a Monday at about age 64. His will was approved for probate on 10 September 1889. We're not sure of his exact death date. His tombstone lists 26 June 1889. Probate records list 24 June 1889. Note: Another grandson Edwin V. O'Hara (1881-1956) - brother to the Peter O'Hara Jr listed as an heir - became a Bishop in the Catholic Church. |

Harry was survived by his 2nd wife Bridget, sons Bernard and Henry of Eyota, John of Columbus, William of Canada, Garrett of Winona and daughter Mary of Rochester. The funeral was held on Monday from Holy Redeemer Catholic church in Eyota. Undertaker T. R. Lawler of Rochester was in charge. |

Biography* | William Thomas Laivell, 1879-1933: Born on a farm in Fountain township, Fillmore County, Minnesota, William moved with his parents to Chatfield City in 1887. In 1898, at age 19, he joined International Harvester Company and by 1900 was a machine salesman. In 1906, William married Stella Kirtley. In 1910, they, with a son William, were living with Stella's mother at 928 Alabama Steet, in the 9th ward of Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama. William continued to work as a salesman for IH. In 1920, his mother-in-law and two brothers-in-law were living with them. William and Stella owned the house free of mortgage and William had been promoted to manager. By 1924, after periods spent as assistant general manager in Charlotte, North Carolina and as district manager in Chicago, he had moved to Minneapolis, Hennepin County and had become manager of IH's motor truck branch. In 1930, he owned a $11,000 house at 4936 Newton Ave So in the 13th ward. William, 54, resident of 4936 Newton Ave South, Minneapolis, died on a Sunday at St Mary's hospital in Rochester after a stay of 26-days. He had apparently been on the way to recovery following an operation 2-weeks previously. Informant on the death cert was his son William of Minneapolis. Cause of death was epithelioma pelvis r. kidney (6+months), paralytic ileus (10-days), bronchopneumonia (2-days). He was attended by Dr. J. W. Kernohan (MD) of Mayo Clinic. William was survived by his mother Ellen, wife Stella, two sons William and John of Minneapolis, sister Mrs Edward Crowley on a farm near Chatfield, two brothers P. H. and Frank Laivell of Chatfield. The funeral was held on Tuesday from Saint Mary's Catholic church with the Rev William F. Coleman officiating. International Harvester headquarters office in Minneapolis was closed the day of the funeral. Chatfield businesses were also closed during the funeral. 40-members of Minneapolis staff and district office attended. Others friends and relatives outside of Chatfield who attended were Mrs J. S. Biography* | James Francis Laivell, 1889-1954: James, often listed as Frank, was the last of five. The third child was the only daughter. James grew up in Chatfield and was schooled through the 8th grade. Then he went to work as a salesman in his brother Patrick's clothing store. In 1911 he was married to Lillie White. In 1924 he left the clothing store and started selling life insurance. In 1930, they owned a house valued at $4,500. In 1940, the house was now valued at $3,000 and he was proprietor of a tavern. During the following year they opened a restaurant called the Crystal Cafe. James and Lillie both worked there and later so did their daughter Joan. James, 64, died on a Sunday. The informant on the death cert was his son John. Cause of death was strangulation by hanging (suicide). He was attended by physician J. E. Wesbury (MD) of Lanesboro, Minnesota. James was survived by wife Lillie, daughters Mrs Kenneth Hasskamp of Crosby, Minnesota and Joan at home, son John, two grandchildren, brother P. H., and sister Mrs E. P. Crowley of Chatfield. He was predeceased by one brother. The funeral was held on Wednesday at Saint Mary's Catholic church with the Right Rev. William F. Coleman officiating. Pallbearers were Harry Sisson, Kenneth McRae, Edward Hass, Paul Lynch, Dr O. W. Hauck and Leonard Dietz. Undertaker D. W. Boetzer of Chatfield was in charge. |

Biography* | Ellen V. "Nellie" Laivell Crowley, 1881-1957: Born on a farm in Fountain township, Fillmore County, Minnesota, Nellie moved into Chatfield City with her family in 1887. She was the third of five children and the only daughter. Nellie received a high school education. After her 1911 marriage to Edward Crowley, Nellie moved onto her husband's farm in Chatfield township. They had three children of their own. After Edward died in 1936, Nellie continued to operate the farm. Eventually her son Paul took over. Nellie died on a Thursday at age 76. Her son was informant on the death cert. Cause of death was coronary thrombosis (30-min), arteriosclerosis and hypertensive heart disease, her attendant physician was not listed on the death cert. Nellie was survived by son Paul, two daughters Catherine Crowley of Chatfield and Mrs Phyllis(sic) Jackson of Washington, DC (her given name Mary Evelyn, husband's given name Phillip). There was one grandchild. The funeral was held on Monday at Saint Mary's Catholic Church Rev Monsignor William F Coleman officiating. Palbearers were Rex Crowley, Wm Laivell, John Laivell, Charles Clemens, Harold Lynch and Joe Lawson. Undertaker D. W. Boetzer of Chatfield was in charge. |

Biography* | Edward Patrick Crowley, 1874-1936: A first generation Irish-American, Edward was the fifth of seven children and the second son. His father, also Edward, immigrated from Ireland in the 1850s and by 1860 was farming in Chatfield township. This farm would be operated by the Crowley family for over 100-years. Little Edward was born in Chatfield Village, and lived in the township for most of his life. In 1920, Edward was operating the family farm and owned a mortgaged home in Chatfield township. By 1930, the farm was free of mortgage. Edward, 62, died on a Friday at Worrall hospital in Rochester, Olmsted County, Minnesota. Cause of death was agranulocytosis (4-days) and bronchopneumonia (2-days). He was attended by Dr. J. C. Hawthorne of the Mayo Clinic. Edward was survived by his widow Ellen, son Paul, daughters Catherine and Mary Evelyn, brother Cornelius and sisters Mrs Pat Healy and Mrs Tom Healy, all of Chatfield. The funeral was held on Monday at Saint Mary's Catholic church with the Rev Wm F Coleman officiating. She later taught in Kellogg, Preston, Plainview, Austin, Rochester and Washington. In 1950, Catherine and another teacher were lodging with M/M Franz Peters in Plainview Village, Wabasha County. She taught for 50-yrs before retiring in 1985. Catherine was a member of a teacher sorority, the Southeast Minnesota Reading Council (of which she was a past president), the Minnesota Reading Association and the International Reading Association. Catherine never married. Catherine, 76, of 6400 Barrie Road, Edina, Hennepin County, Minnesota, died on a Monday at Fairview Southdale hospital in Edina. Cause of death was a stroke (24-hours) and acute myocardial infarction. She was attended by Dr. Thomas K. Slack, 6363 France Ave South, Edina. Most of the remainder of Mary's career was spent in Medical Administration in teaching hospitals at the University of California in San Diego and Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. After retirement, Mary moved back to Minnesota and worked in the Transcription Deptartment at Fairview Southdale hospital in Edina. In 1993, she was living at 6400 Barrie Road, #1203, Edina Towers, Edina, Minnesota. Both of her siblings were living in the same building. Mary, 86, died on a Sunday at an unknown location. She was survived by a son. Mary was preceded by a sister Catherine Crowley and a brother Paul Crowley. Her husband was not mentioned. The funeral was held on Wednesday at Saint Richard's Catholic church, 6th & Lyndale Ave South, Richfield, Hennepin County, Minnesota. A private burial took place in the spring at Saint Mary's cemetery in Chatfield. Washburn-McReavy, Edina chapel, was in charge. |

Born and raised on a farm in Carrolton township, Fillmore County, Minnesota, Margaret was the second of fourteen children and the second of ten daughters. A first generation Irish-American, her father was born in Ireland, her mother in New York. After Margaret's 1878 marriage to Thomas Downes, they took up residence on his farm in Sheridan township, Sioux County, Iowa. Margaret and Thomas had nine children, six of whom grew to adulthood. They farmed near Hull in Sioux County for some years and circa 1902 moved to a farm near Sheldon in O'Brien County. They later retired and moved into Sheldon. Margaret, 51, died at home in the east part of Sheldon on a Sunday after a short illness. She was survived by her husband, her parents and six children: Kate Downes and Mrs J. Barry of Malden, Washington; James Downes of Calgary, Canada; and Thomas, Rose and Bess of Sheldon, five siblings: Mrs L. Hubbard of Texas, Mrs T. W. Scanlan, Mrs T. Lynch, John J. Enright all of Laneseboro, Minnesota and Anna Enright. The funeral was held on Saturday at Saint Patrick's Catholic church in Sheldon. The Rev. Griffith of Salix, Iowa officiated with Rev. Biography* | Johanna "Josie" Enright Scanlan, 1867-1951: Born and raised on a farm in Carrolton Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota, Johanna spent a number of years around 1885 with her aunt Eliza (McCabe) O'Hara in the village of Lanesboro, also in Fillmore County. Johanna's education included one-year of high school. After her 1897 marriage to Thomas Scanlan, Johanna continued to live in Carrolton township on her husband's farm. She and Thomas had four children. They retired circa 1931 and moved into Lanesboro village. In 1940, they were living with their daughter Madalyn and her husband Howard Ellingson. Johanna and her husband Thomas celebrated their Golden anniversary in 1947 and he died in October of that year. Johanna died at her home in Lanesboro on a Saturday at age 84. She had suffered a heart attack three-months before and never fully recovered. Johanna was survived by two sons John A. of Saint Paul, Minnesota and Leon of Lanesboro; two daughters Mrs Howard Ellingson of Lanesboro and Mrs W. R. Winner of Madison, Wisconsin; two sisters Mrs Frances Ryan of Eureka, California and Mrs Timothy Lynch of Lanesboro; ten-grandchildren and eight-great-grandchildren. Her son Leon was the informant on her death cert. Cause of death was chronic myocardial degeneration (several years), arteriosclerosis, diabetes mellitus and senility. She was attended by J. E. Westrup (MD) of Lanesboro. The funeral was held on Wednesday at Saint Patrick Catholic church in Lanesboro with the Rev. A. J. Quillin officiating. Undertaker Stanley L. Johnson of Lanesboro was in charge. |

Biography* | John Joseph "J. J." Enright, 1869-1943: John was a twin, the sixth of fourteen children and the second of four sons. He was born, raised, lived and died in Carrolton township, Fillmore County, Minnesota, John was a farmer all of his life. He took over the family homestead farm in 1900. John was married twice and fathered five children. His first wife Johanna Scanlan died in 1915 and in 1923 he married Nellie Towey. John took a keen interest in civic, church and school matters, accepting offices and appointments of trust and responsibility. He signed a last will and testament on 3 Dec 1931 appointing Edward Scanlon, Preston, executor. Witnesses were Verna Wedmer and state senator Henry A.Larson, both of Preston. A codicil to the will was signed on 6 May 1936 replacing executor Edward Scanlon with his own son Thomas J. Enright. The codicil was witnessed by Philip B. Gartner & Henry A. Larson, both of Preston. John died at his home on a Friday at age 73. He had not been in the best of health for the past year and had several heart attacks. Informant on the death cert was his son Thomas Joseph. Cause of death was chronic myocarditus w/auricular fibrillation and cardiac hypertrophy (indef). John was attended by physician Ralph B Johnson of Lanesboro. John was survived by his second wife Nellie and children Sr Redempta (Margaret) of Lake City, Minnesota and Thomas Joseph, Grace, Raymond and Vincent at home. Also two sisters Mrs T.W.Scanlan and Mrs Tim Lynch of Lanesboro. The funeral was held at Saint Patrick's Catholic church in Lanesboro on Monday with Rev. McVeigh officiating assisted by Rev. Biography* | Anna Enright, 1869-1941: Anna was a frist generation Irsh-American who was born and raised on a farm in Carrolton township, Fillmore County, Minnesota. She was a twin and the seventh child of fourteen born to Thomas Enright and Mary McCabe and was the fifth of ten daughters. In 1899, single and aged 30, Anna left the home farm and journeyed to Canada where she would become a citizen and live for most of the rest of her life. She stayed in touch with some members of her family and is known to have traveled back to the home farm for her father's funeral in 1916. In 1901, Anna was living in a hotel in Rossland, British Columbia Province, about 1,600 miles (2,560km) from Carrolton, and working in the hotel as a waitress. She had worked four-months by 31 March and earned $120 (Canadian dollars) in wages. In 1911, Anna was living in Sulphur Creek, Yukon Province, 1,916 miles (3,065km) north of Rossland, BC. There were nine people in the dwelling - the employer and eight employees. Anna was the only female. Occupations were not listed. Her sister Margaret Downes died in 1912. Anna was the only sibling not mentioned in Margaret's obit. In about 1915. Anna joined the White Pass and Yukon Route, a narrow guage railroad connecting Skagway, Alaska with Whitehorse in Yukon Province, a distance of 110-miles. In 1921, Anna was living with seven other male emplyees of the railroad in Cowley, Yukon Province. Cowley is about 20-miles south of Whitehorse the northern terminus. Anna was cook and domestic for her housemates. By 1928, when her mother died, Anna was living in Skagway, Alaska at the southern terminus of the railroad. By 1941, Anna was living at Mount Saint Mary's Hospital, an annex to Saint Joseph's Hospital in Victoria that operated as a home for the aged and incurables. Anna, 72, died in Saint Joseph's hospital on a Saturday. Cause of death was peritonitis due to gastric ulcer perforation. There was no operation. There was an autopsy. Anna's occupation was listed as practical nurse at which she had worked for one month. Anna's physician was F. W. Bryant. Besdies many friends in the north, Anna was survived by two sisters Mrs Thomas Scanlan and Mrs Timothy Lynch of Lanesboro, Minnesota. She was also survived by a third sister Frances Ryan of California and a brother John Enright of Minnesota who were not mentioned in the obits. The funeral was held on Tuesday at Saint Andrew’s Cathedral. The Rev Miles of Vancouver sang the requiem mass. Pallbearers were C. O’Leary, M. J. Haley, C. P. Kelpin and E. Constable. Hayward's B.C. Funeral Co, Ltd, 734 Broughton Street, Victoria, B.C. was in charge. |

We have chosen to use the info in her obituary which is 22 May 1974 in Carrolton township. Katherine was schooled through the sixth grade. She married Timothy Lynch in 1902 and went to live on his farm in Holt township. Katherine and Timothy had eight children. The third and fourth children were twin sons who died in infancy. The seventh and eighth were twins also. In July 1952, Katherine and Timothy moved into Saint Joseph's Home in Fairmont, Martin County, Minnesota. Husband Timothy died eight months later in 1953. Katherine, 79, died on a Saturday at Saint Joseph's Home. She had been in ill health for nine-months. Sr. M. Lucille Hammond was informant on the death cert. Cause of death was arteriosclerosis and coronary sclerosis. Dr. V. H. Gardner (MD) of Fairmont had been her physician since she moved into Saint Joseph's. Katherine was survived by four-sons: Leo of Austin, Minnesota, John of Chicago, Illinois, Vincent of Salinas, California and Thomas of Lanesboro, Minnesota; by two-daughters: Sr Mary Immacula of Sparta, Wisconisn and Mrs Paul Frank of Riverside, New Jersey and 13-grandchildren. The funeral was held on Tuesday at Saint Patrick's in Lanesboro with the Rev. William Gorman officiating. Undertaker George P. Stefanski, Fairmont was in charge. |

Biography* | Frances J. Enright Ryan, 1877-1957: No birth record exists for Frances and determing her birth year is difficult. The only records found of Frances with a birth date are her California death index entry and her obituary both of which list 08 April 1877. Howver, Frances had a sibling, for whom there IS a birth record, who was born in June 1877 (and died shortly thereafter). Born and raised on a farm in Carrolton township, Fillmore County, Minnesota, Frances had left the home farm after 1900 with a high school education. In 1905 she returned from Denver, Colorado to spend the winter with her parents. Married at least three times, Frances was in Texas in 1912 as Mrs. L. Hubbard. In 1916, when her father died, she was living in Sheldon, Vernon County, Missouri as Mrs. E. E. Helberg. In 1917 Frances Hellberg was residing at 2404 Harrison in Kansas City. In 1918 she was employed by the Sweeney School. In 1920, Frances owned a mortgaged home at the Harrison address and was employed as a waitress at Union Station. She was listed as married but her husband, born in Oklahoma, was not listed with her. In 1928, when her mother died, Frances was living in Eureka, Humboldt County, California as Mrs Frances Hellberg. In 1930, she was living on Third Street, Crescent City, Del Norte County, California, was renting at $25/month, was listed as Frances Hellberg, a widow, and was employed as the proprietress of a boarding house. By 1932, Frances was back in Eureka, California and was listed as Frances Hellberg through 1936 (per the Eureka, California City Directories). Then, in the 1937/38 city directory, she is listed as Frances Ryan, widow!6 In 1940, as Frances Ryan, a widow, she was renting at 103 Sixth Street in the 4th ward for $18/month and had two-lodgers. Frances had no occupation and in 1939 had no wages or other income. By 1957, she was still listed at the 6th Street address Frances, 79, died on a Friday in a local hospital. She was survived by a son, Thomas L. Ryan and wife Constance of Eureka, two grandchildren, neices, nephews and cousins. The funeral was held on Tuesday at Saint Bernard's Catholic church. Pallbearers were Erling Sampson, Benjamin Ballinger, Howard Cortie, Peter Procissi, William Harper, Leonard Wilson and William Ritchie. Pierce Mortuary Chapel was in charge. |
