Biography* Patrick Henry Laivell, 1877-1956:
Patrick's christening sponsors were Patrick Walsh, his father's half brother, and Bridget McCabe, his mother's sister. Variously known as P. H., Patrick, P. Henry and Henry throughout his life. Patrick was employed in farming in Fountain township, Fillmore County, Minnesota before his marriage. In 1887, Patrick moved to Chatfield City in Fillmore County and entered the clothing business where he was to remain for 60-years. He first clerked in the local store for 8-years before buying it. He owned and operated the Laivell Clothing Company on Main Street for half a century and was active in the business until his health failed early in 1956. When Patrick registered for the WWI draft in 1918 at age 41, he was described as a man of medium height and build with brown eyes and gray hair. In 1940, the house that Patrick and wife Nona owned was valued at $8,000. Very active in the community, Patrick was a charter member and past president of the Chatfield Commercial Club, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Chatfield Hotel, a charter member of the Rotary Club, a member of the Holy Name Society of Saint Mary's Catholic Church, and a charter member of the Northwestern Jobbers and Buyer's Association in Saint Paul.

Patrick, 79, died on a Tuesday at Saint Mary's hospital in Rochester after a eight-day stay. Cause of death was obstructive jaundice and carcinoma of stomach with metastasis. The illness lasted for several months. Patrick was attended by Dr. W. A. Bennett (MD) of the Mayo Clinic. The undertaker was Paul Cronin of Rochester. Patrick was survived by his wife Nona E. Brennan, a daughter, Miss Dolores Laivell, and a sister, Mrs. E. P. Crowley, both of Chatfield. The funeral was held on Tuesday at Saint Mary's Catholic church with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. William F. Coleman officiating. All stores in Chatfield were closed from 9-to-10 a.m. Pallbearers were Harry Sisson, William K Laivell, Charles Johnson, Dr John Norton, Paul Crowley and John Laivell. Boetzer Funeral Home was in charge.
