Biography* Lillie White Laivell, 1890-1983:
Born in Chatfield, Minnesota, Lillie was the first child of a father Charles, born in the same place, and a mother Mae born in Wisconsin. In 1895, her father was working as a butcher. In 1900, the family owned their home, free of mortgage, on Winona Avenue, Chatfield, Elmira township, Olmsted County. The father Charles had left the family and was boarding in Seatle, Washington and working as a conductor on a street car. By 1902, Charles had returned and was living with the family again in Chatfield. Two more children, a daughter and a son, were born into the family. In 1910, the couple were operating a dry goods and grocery store in which both worked. In 1911, Lillie married James Laivell and after the marriage they continued to live in Chatfield. About 1915, Lillie's parents, Charles and Mae, were divorced. Charles remarried and moved to California where he died in 1923. In 1950 James and Lillie owned and operated the Crystal Cafe where they both worked. They operated the cafe for 12-years. James died in 1954.

Lillie Laivell, 93, of 512 Fillmore Street SE, Chatfield, died on a Saturday at Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield where she had been for two-weeks. Her son John Laivell of 1309 13th Avenue NE, Rochester, Minnesota was informant on the death cert. Cause of death was bronchopneumonia (1-week), generalized osclerosis (more-than-10-years). Lillie was attended by physician Fred D. Banfield (MD) of Chatfield. In addition to the one son, she was survived by a daughter Joan of Chatfield, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The funeral was hekd Monday at Saint Mary's Catholic church in Chatfield with the Rev Donald Leary officiating. Riley Funeral Home of Chatfield was in charge.

Biography* John Joseph Laivell, 1924-2011:
John was christened on 07 September 1924 at Saint Mary's Catholic church, Chatfield by the Rev J. K. Ryan with sponsors Robert and Mary Lynch. He attended Chatfield Public Schools, graduating from Chatfield High School in 1943. After graduation John enlisted in the US Marine Corps where he served as a Mortar Crewman in the Pacific Theater and was wounded during combat on the island of Guam. John married Mary May York in 1946. He and Mary later moved to Rochester, where he began his career with the Rochester Police Department in 1958. John retired in 1985 as a Lieutenant after 26 years of service. He was a longstanding member of the VFW, American Legion, Eagles Club, and the Marine Corps League. John was also a lifetime member of the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers. He was a champion trap-shooter, avid hunter and fisherman. During retirement John spent many hours reading and studying American military history.

John Joseph Laivell, 86, of Rochester, died on a Tuesday at Saint Mary's Hospital in Rochester. He was survived by three daughters and one son, a sister, Joan Laivell of Chatfield, and five grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his wife Mary and a sister Helen Hasskamp. The funeral was held on Monday, 28 March, at Saint Francis of Assisi Church with the Rev Timothy T. Reker officiating. Military honors were provided by American Legion Post 92 of Rochester. Burial was made at a later date. Memorials were preferred to the US Marine Corps Toys for Tots Program.

Biography* Helen Virginia Laivell Hasskamp, 1920-1974:
The oldest of three children and the only daughter, Helen gew up in Chatfield City, Fillmore county, Minnesota. Her father Frank was a life insurance agent and later owned and operated a tavern. By 1940, Helen had completed two-years of college. By 1950, she was living in an apartment building at 810 East 12th in Denver, Colorado and was teaching English and Social Studies in a Junior High School. In 1953, Helen married Kenneth Hasskamp of Crosby, Minnasota at Saint Mary's Catholic church in Chatfield. The Right Reverend William F. Coleman offciated. Miss Joan Laivell of Chatfield attended her sister as Maid of Honor. Faye Mary Laivell daughter of M/M John Laivell of Chatfield was flower girl. John Laivell of Chatfield, brother of the bride and Fred Hasskamp of Crosby, brother of the groom, were ushers [the Best man was not mentioned]. Miss Hazel Heydon of Chatfield was the organist and Edne Thorson of Chatfield sang. A reception for 150 guests was held in church parlors followed by dinner at Hotel Chatfield. The new M/M Hasskamp took a road trip along the shores of Lake Michigan and then resided in Crosby. Helen was employed as a school teacher in the Crosby-Ironton Public School System. She was a member of Saint Joseph's Catholic church, the Cuyuna Women's Club, the Parent-Teacher's Association and Saint Joseph's Altar Society.

Helen Virginia Hasskamp, 53, of 15 1st Street NW in Crosby, died at Cuyuna Range District Hospital on a Saturday. Her eldest son was informant on the death cert. Cause of death was inanition cachexia (2-months), carcinoma of colon (2-weeks) with generalized metastisis to abdominal organs (8-months), Helen was attended by physician C. M. Marshall (MD) of the Cuyuna Range Clinic in Crosby. Helen was survived by two sons and two daughters, her mother Mrs Lillie Laivell and sister Joan Laivell of Chatfield and brother John Laivell of Rochester. She was preceded by her husband Kenneth and father Frank Laivell. The funeral was held at Saint Joseph's on Wednesday with the Rev. F. John Nicholson officiating. Koop Funeral Home of 32 East Main Street in Crosby was in charge. All public schools and Saint Joseph's Parochial School in Crosby were closed on Wednesday in respect of Helen's memory.
