Biography* | Joan Florence Laivell, 1927- 2023: Joan was the third and last child and the only daughter. She never married and lived in the family house most of her life. Joan Florence was christened at Saint Mary's Catholic church in Chatfield by the Rev. William F. Coleman. She was sponsored by Katherine and Paul Crowley5. In 1930, Joan's father Frank was working as a life insurance agent. In 1940 he was operating a tavern. By the following year he opened a restaurant, the Crystal Cafe. Joan graduated from Chatfield High School in 1945. And afterward she worked in the cafe. The cafe closed in 1954 when her father died and Joan then waitressed in the Green Parrot Cafe in Rochester until 1973. She then became caregiver for her mother Lillie until Lillie died in 1983. Joan waitressed at Jonathan's from 1984 until retirement. She was an avid and accomplished ice skater and loved to walk or ride her bicycle around town. Joan was a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church. Joan, 95, a life-long resident of Chatfield, died at Chosen Valley Care Center on a Sunday. She preceded in death by her parents; sister Helen Virginia Hasskamp; brother, John Laivell; and two nieces. Joan was survived by many nephews, nieces, grand-nephews and grand-nieces. The funeral was held at Saint Mary's on Friday with the Rev. Edward McGrath officiating. Riley Funeral Home was in charge. |

Biography* | Josephine T. Ellingson Scanlan, 1900-1969: Josephine was the second born of six children and the oldest of three daughters. Her obituary lists her birthplace as Lanesboro but it is more likely she was born on the family farm in Section 34 of Carrolton Township a few miles southwest of Lanesboro. Her parents, Gustave Ellingson and Anna Gunderson, were first generation Norwegian-Americans both born in Minnesota. Josephine was baptised into the Lutheran religion on December 1st, 1900 at the Union Prairie Lutheran church in Lanesboro. In 1915, she was confirmed in the same faith. Josephine grew up on the home farm in Carrolton and achieved an 8th grade education. In 1925 she married Leon Scanlon and in 1930, they were renting in Lanesboro for $15/month and had a son. At sometime during her adult life, Josephine converted to Catholicism. In 1939, Josephine did not work for wages but had other income. Josephine, 68, died on a Tuesday at Harmony (Fillmore County, Minnesota) hospital where she had been a patient for several months. Cause of death was a brain tumor (astrocytoma) (about one year). Josephine was attended by Dr. J. E. Westrup of Lanesboro. She had undergone brain surgery the previous December. Josephine was survived by her husband Leon, her son, and two sisters Mrs. A. J. (Edith) Hennessy of Portland, Oregon and Mrs. Byron (Dorothy) Strum of Fountain, Minnesota. The funeral was held on Friday from Saint Patrick's Catholic church with the Rev. Wendelyn Spindler officiating. Johnson funeral home was in charge. |

Biography* | Nellie B. Towey Enright, 1885-1962: Nellie was a first generation Irish-American-Norwegian born in a log cabin on the home farm on Irish Ridge between Lanesboro and the Village of Fountain. She was the sixth of eight children born to her Irsh father John Towey. The youngest of the eight was the only son. Nellie's mother, Andrena Paulson, had been married before and had three children by her Norewgian first husband whose surname might have been Elword. Andrena immigrated circa 1870 with her son John. Nothing is known about the other two children although both died before 1880. Nellie attended Wadden Valley School for eight-years and Lanesboro High School graduating in 1906. She attended Winona State Teachers College for one-year then taught in Whalan Public School in the fall of 1907. After three-years Nellie taught at Rushford for four-years and then taught 8th grade for eight-years at Lanesboro. She married widower John J. Enright in June of 1923. They farmed on Irish Ridge until John died in 1943. In the fall of 1945, Nellie resumed teaching in rural schools in the York, Whalan, Spring Valley and Lanesboro areas retiring in 1956. Nellie was a member of Saint Patrick's Altar Society, the Ladies Auxiliary of Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Saint Delores' Unit of Saint Patrick's church. Nellie, 76, died at home in Lanesboro on a Wednesday. Cause of death was chronic myocarditis and endocarditis (indef) and arteriosclerosis. Step-son Joseph Enright was informant on her death cert. Nellie was attended by Ralph(?) B. Johnson(?) (MD) of Lanesboro. She was survived by sons Raymond of Faribault and Vincent of Austin; 3-step-children Sr Redempta (Margaret) of Iona, Minnesota, Grace of Rochester. Minnesota and Joseph of Lanesboro; 2-sisters Mrs Nicholas (Mary) Connelly and Mrs John (Margaret) Connelly both of Lanesboro; and 6-grandchildren. Nellie was preceded by husband John, two-brothers and four-sisters. The Rosary was led on Saturday by the Rev Robert A Kulas, a brother of daughter-in-law Mrs Vincent Enright. The funeral folowed from Saint Patrick's in Lanesboro with Rev Joseph Frisch of Hammond, former Saint Patrick's pastor, officiating. The organ was played by Mrs Karl Doffing. Pallbearers were John N. Connelly, Daniel Hennessy, John Quinn, William Horihan and Leon Scanlan of Lanesboro and Edward Redmond of La Crosse, Wisconsin. Undertaker Stanley L. Johnson of Lanesboro was in charge. |
