He located near Hull, Iowa in 1877, the year before his marriage to Margaret Enright. In 1885, Thomas and his family were living and farming the North-Half of the SouthWest Quarter in Section 15 of Sheridan Township, Sioux County, Iowa. In 1900, they owned a mortgaged farm in Sheridan township (unknown if that's the same farm they occupied in 1885). In 1904, they moved to O'Brien County and by 1910, owned a farm free of mortgage in Carroll Township of O'Brien County. In 1912, he and Margaret retired to a house they bought at 715 Washington Avenue in the 2nd ward of Sheldon, O'Brien County. His wife Margaret died in that same year. Before he died, Thomas owned 240-acres of farmland in Sheridan township, Sioux County and another 160-acres in Carroll township, O'Brien County plus land in the Sunnyside addition to Sheldon, Iowa. Thomas could neither read nor write but family lore has it that he could figure faster in his head than most people with a pencil. Amd he never forgot his family back in Ireland. Each year when the crops were in and sold, a sum of money would be sent to Ireland. Thomas died on a Wednesday at age 83. He was survived by two sons; James W. of Calgary, Alberta Province, Canada and Thomas P. of Holman, Osceola County, Iowa and four daughters: Mrs Mary Barry of Center township, Wapello County, Iowa; Mrs Michael W. Sauer of Waterloo, Blackhawk County, Iowa; Sr Mary Agatha (OSM) of East Saint Louis, Illinois and Kathryn Downes who lived with her father. All were present during Thomas' last illness and death. The funeral was held from Saint Patrick's church in Sheldon, Iowa on Saturday. His nephew Msgr. J. A. Griffin of Fort Dodge, Iowa celebrated the mass. The Rev O'Connor of Worthington acted as deacon and gave the sermon. Rev. English of Sioux City acted as sub-deacon. Thomas left 80-acres of farm land to each of the four oldest children and land in Sheldon, Iowa to the youngest. In addition, he left $500 to his nephew Msgr. J. A. Griffin and a piano to an unnamed sister. Some of this biography came from a "History of the Downes family" by Carol Downes McCarty. |

Biography* | Michael Delaney, 1867-1940: There is only one direct source for a birth date for Michael, his death record. This source has the date as 02 January 1966. However, the birth record for his twin sister Mary is listed as 02 January 1867. Early census records - 1870 federal, 1875 state, 1880 federal, 1885 state and 1895 state - all suggest the twins were born in 1867. And that is the year we have listed for Michael's birth year. Michael grew up and lived his entire life on farms in Carimona township, Fillmore County, Minnesota. By 1900, with a sixth-grade education, he was renting a farm and his parents were living with him. In 1905, Michael's father Thomas died and in that same year his sister Margaret came to live with him and his mother Catherine. By 1920, Michael owned his farm. His mother and sister still lived with him. In 1930, Michael was boarding with Bernhard and Lucille Brown. He was listed as a widower with no occupation - he has always been listed as single and no marriage record for him has been found. In 1940, Michael, single again, lived by himself in a house on a farm. He owned the house which was valued at $900. Michael did not work but had other income. Michael, 73, died at his home on a Friday. He was found dead in bed by his guardian Charles Riddle who lived with him. Michael had been ill for several years and had recently been confined to the house. Cause of death was cardio renal disease (three-years), cirrhosis of liver (one-year) and, dropsy (one-year).
