Biography* | William Henry Messick, 1875-1928: Born in Illinois, the youngest of eight, to parents both born in New York, William was single when he registered for the World War I draft on 12 September 1918. At that time he was living at 524 North Broadway, Billings, Montana and was a self employed merchant (Messick Dept Store). His nearest relative was his mother Mrs. H. Z. Messick of Ellis, Kansas. William was described as a man of medium height and build with blue eyes and dark brown hair. By 1920, he was married and lived with his wife at 1029 30th Street North, in the 2nd ward of Billings, Yellowstone County, Montana. They owned the house free of mortgage and William was part owner of a dry goods store. William, 53, died on a Tuesday. |

Biography* | Kathryn F. "Kate" Downes, 1882-1962: Born and raised on a farm in Sheridan township5, Sioux County, Iowa, Kathryn was the third of nine children and the second of six daughters. Kathryn received an eighth grade education. By 1905 the family had moved to a farm in Carroll township in O'Brien County (P. O. Sheldon, Iowa) but Kathryn was not living with them. In 1911, she was living with her brother James and his family in Calgary, Alberta Province, Canada. In 1912, Kathryn was living in Malden, Washington with her sister Mary and her husband John Barry. Their mother died in that year and Kathryn moved back to Iowa to take care of her father. By 1915 their father moved into a house at 715 Washington Avenue in Sheldon, Iowa's 2nd ward. Her sister Rose lived with them. The father died in 1925 and Kathryn was the informant on his death cert. Kate received 80-acres in section 4 of Carroll township, O'Brien County, Iowa from her father's estate (half of a 160-acre farm - her sister Rose inherited the other half). In 1928, Kathryn's maternal grandmother died. She traveled to Lanesboro, Minnesota to attend the funeral. Kathryn died in hospital on a Thursday of coronary failure at age 79. Survivors included a sister, Sr Mary Agatha of Gilmore, Iowa and several nieces and nephews. The funeral was held on Saturday at Saint Patrick Catholic church in Sheldon with the Rev John Lynch officiating. Kathryn was buried with her parents. Vander Ploeg Funeral Home was in charge. |

Biography* | Rose V. Downes Sauer, 1890-1947: Rose was the sixth of nine children and the fourth of six daughters. She grew up on farms in Sheridan township, Sioux County, Iowa and then Carroll township, O'Brien County. Rose completed two-years of high school. By 1912, her parents had retired from farming and moved into a house in Sheldon. Rose's mother died in that year of 1912 and Rose lived with her father until she married Michael Sauer in 1924. When Rose's father died in 19254, she and Michael were living in Waterloo, Black Hawk County, Iowa. In 1930, they were living at 1308 Bertch in Waterloo, Iowa's 1st ward with their two children. By 1936, the Sauers were back on the Downes farm east of Sheldon. In 1940, their house was valued at $1,500. Rose, 56, died in Saint Vincent's hospital in Sioux City, Woodbury County Iowa on a Friday. She had been in the hospital for 21-days. Cause of death was pneumonia (4-days) with contributing factors of nerve paralysis (2-months) and diabetes (10-years). Rose's birth date on the death cert is listed as 03 March 1891. R. T Rohwer (MD) of Sioux City was her physician. The funeral was held the following Tuesday. Some of this biography came from a "History of the Downes family" by Carol Downes McCarty. |

Biography* | Thomas Patrick Downes, 1888-1936: Thomas was born[CIT]:Thomas' 1911 O'Brien County Marriage record listed his birthplace as Hull in Sioux County. His obituary listed it as 'near' Sheldon. He was probably born on the home farm in Sheridan township, Sioux County.[:CIT] and raised on farms in Sioux and O'Brien Counties of Iowa. He was the fifth of nine children and the second of three sons. He married Eleanor Cashman in 1911. They lived for a year on the Downes farm East of Sheldon then moved to a farm near Bigelow, Nobles County, Minnesota. Later they moved to another farm in Lorain township, also in Nobles County. By 1925 they had moved back to Iowa and were living in Holman[CIT]:The 1925 Iowa State census is organized by township. There are two Holman townships, an East and a West. Which the Downes livid in is not discenable from the record.3 |

His father Thomas died later that year and left him 80-acres in section 16 of Sheridan township, Sioux County, Iowa in exchange for which young Thomas and Eleanor gave his mother $1,700. They then rented the house at 750 Washington Avenue in Sheldon, O'Brien County for $50/month. Later they bought the house and another plot of land in Sheldon from his father's estate. Thomas built an oil and gas station on the plot, which he then operated, plus he delivered fuel to farmers in the area.
Thomas died on a Sunday at age 48. He was working at a gravel pit near Ashton in Gilman township, Osceola County when he had a heart attack. Thomas was survived by his wife Eleanor and eight of their twelve children. The funeral was held on Monday from Saint Patrick's church. Pallbearers were Lyle McCarty, Vetus McCarty, Frank Dougherty, Charley Burns, Eugene Mulhern and Ed Bohan of Sanborn. Probate valued his estate at $750.00 with debts which greatly exceeded that amount. There was a $2000.00 mortgage on the home requiring an $18/mo payment. A judgement on 15 May 1936 for $300.00 in favor of Thomas was not collected before 28 February 1940.

Biography* | Michael Sauer, 1875-1963: The eleventh of at least twelve, Michael was a first generation German-American. He grew up on a farm in Oregon township, Ogle County, Illinois and was educated through the sixth grade. When he was married in 1924 to Rose Downes he was working in Waterloo as a truck gardener. By 1930 they had two children and owned a $4,000 house at 138 Bertch in the 1st ward of Waterloo, Black Hawk County, Iowa. Michael was a gardening laborer. By 1936, they had moved to an 80-acre farm in Carroll township, O'Brien County, east of Sheldon, Iowa, that Rose had inherited from her father. Michael, 87, died in an Ashton, Osceola County, Iowa nursing home on a Wednesday after a long illness. He was survied by a daughter, a son, a sister Katherine Sauer of Oregon, Illinois and nine grandchildren. The funeral was held on Saturday at Saint Patrick Catholic church with the Rev. J. J. Hyland officiating. Michael was buried with his wife Rose. Vander-Ploeg Funeral Home was in charge. |
