Mary was the eldest of nine and had three brothers. She was born and raised on a farm in Sheridan township of Sioux County, Iowa. In 1900, Mary was living in Wayne, Nebraska and working as a house servant for a 53-year-old German-born physician and his family. When Mary married John Barry in 1907 she was living in Iowa. When her mother died in 1912, Mary and John were living in Malden, Washington. Her sister Kathryn was living with them. In 1925, Mary received 80-acres in section 16 of Sheridan township, Sioux county, Iowa from her father's estate. Mary and John were living in Center township, Wapello County, Iowa at the time and had a daughter, born in Montana, believed to have been adopted. In 1929, when her grandmother's estate was probated, Mary was living in Montana. When her brother died in 1936, Mary was also in Montana.
