Biography* | Eleanor F. Cashman Downes, 1887-1963: Eleanor's 1963 death cert and obituary list her birth year as 1885. Eleanor's obituary lists her birth place as Freeport, Illinois. Eleanor was not born in Freeport although her mother Della Sullivan was. Eleanor's delayed birth record issued by the State of Iowa in 1954, lists her birth year as 1887 and her birth place as Forest City, Winnebago County, Iowa. In 1891, the family was living in Goodell, Hancock County, Iowa. The father William was working as a stock buyer. In December of 1891 the mother Della died of tuberculosis. After a year of trying to raise two daughters by himself, William brought the girls to Sheldon to live with two aunts and uncles. Eleanor lived with her mother's brother and wife who ran the hotel in Matlock, Iowa northwest of Sheldon and Maude lived with Eleanor and Pete Baadte, her mother's sister and husband who farmed northwest of Sheldon. The father William then left for Spokane, Washington and lived the rest of his life on a ranch. He married the woman who owned the ranch, died of cancer in 1922 and is burried in the cemetery in Spokane. Eleanor completed one year of high school and in 1910 was a live-in servant with bank president William Smith and his wife Adelaid at 604 Fourth Avenue in Sheldon, Iowa. The following year she married Thomas Downes. Eleanor and Thomas lived for a year on the Downes farm east of Sheldon then moved to a farm in Nobles County, Minnesota. They then rented a different farm also in Nobles County. By 1925 they had returned to Iowa. In 1930, they were renting the Downes' house at 750 Washington Avenue in Sheldon which they later bought from the Thomas Downes estate. Then, in 1936, Thomas died suddenly at age 48. In 1940, five of Eleanor's 12-children were still living at home. The house was valued at $5,000. Eleanor had a difficult time after the death of her husband in 1936 as the country was just coming out of a great depression. She worked at any job she could find usually taking care of children or helping young mothers. The last nine years of her life she lived with a daughter where once again she was on a farm and loved it. Four of their children died as babies ranging from a few months to three years old. Three are buried in Worthington, Minnesota at the Catholic Cemetery across the road from where they farmed. One is buried in Sheldon. A grandson bought a marker for the three graves in Worthington. Eleanor died at home on a Thursday of pneumonia at age 75. She was survived by six daughters and two sons. Eleanor was predeceased by her husband and the four children. The funeral was held on Saturday at Saint Patrick's Catholic church in Sheldon. The Rev. J. J. Hyland officiated. Vander Ploeg Funeral Home was in charge. Some of this biography came from a "History of the Downes family" by Carol Downes McCarty. |
