Biography* | Mary McCabe Enright, 1830-1928: Born in New York, Mary came to McHenry County, Illinois with her parents in 1839 and on to Filllmore County, Minnesota in 1855 where she spent the rest of her life. We have little confidence in Mary's birth year recorded here. The records we have of Mary's birth are very inconsistent - ranging from 1827-to-1838. We have used the birth year from her death cert in this record but she was probably born four-or-five-years later, in 1834/5. The best data we have on her parent's birth years suggest they were both born ca1813, which would mean if Mary was born in 1830 her parents were about 17-years-old at the time. Also, Mary herself, if born in 1830 would have been 53 when her last child (that we know of) was born. Mary was married to Thomas Enright in 1858 in the Mulholland home. They had 14-children. They retired from farming in 1892 and moved into Fountain Village. Husband Thomas Enright died in 1916. She stayed in Fountain and sisters Mrs Annie Madden and Mrs Eliza O'Harra lived with her. About 1925 Mary went to live with her son John while her sisters moved to Saint Paul. Mary, 98, died on a Friday at the home of her son and daughter-in-law on the old Enright homestead west of Lanesboro in Carrolton township. She had been ill since Christmas and the cause of death was valvular heart disease. Son John was the informant on the death cert. She was survived by son John, four daughters Mrs T. W. Scanlan of Carrolton township, Mrs Timothy Lynch of Holt township, Mrs Frances Hellberg of Eureka, California and Anna Enright of Skagway, Alaska plus fifteen-grandchildren and sixteen-great-grandchildren. The funeral was held on Monday from Saint Patrick's Catholic Church in Lanesboro with the Rev. L. M. Devlin officiating. Relatives at the funeral from out-of-town were M/M M. McCabe of Boyden, Iowa; Mrs Ed Weir of Hull, Iowa; Katie Downs of Sheldon, Iowa; M. Delaney of Carimona; M. McCabe of Fountain; M/M P. H. Laivell, Mrs Ellen Laivell and son, and Frank Laivell all of Chatfield. |

Biography* | Ethel Cecelia McCabe Rudloff, 1889-1920: Ethel was the eighth of nine children and the eighth of eight daughters. She grew up on the family farm in Sheridan township, Sioux County, Iowa and recieved a grade school education in local schools. On Sunday 14 May 1911, Ethel went for a horse and buggy ride with her brother Matt, sister Kate and cousin Arthur Weir. They met an auto driven by Gerrit DeMots of Hull which frightened the team and caused it to bolt with the result that the four young people were thrown from the buggy. Dr. Maris was in the auto with Mr. DeMots and they immediately stopped the machine and took the injured people to Hull where Dr. Maris dressed the injuries. Ethel McCabe was unconscious for several hours and was very badly hurt. The doctor took several stitches in a big gash in her chin and lip. In 1916, Ethel was married to Erwin Rudloff by Rev. Father Murphy. Ethel wore a white dress of crepe de chine, Erwin a navy blue suit. Miss Eva Wier was bridesmaid. Matt McCabe supported the groom. A wedding dinner was served afterwards at the McCabe home. The couple spent a few days in Sioux City, before departing for their home in Primghar. Later they lived in Manson in Calhoun County. In 1920, they were living on Mill Street in Manson. Ethel, 30, died at home of pneumonia on a Wednesday. Her husband, parents, Mr. and Mrs. Matt McCabe Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Frank Buren, Matt McCabe, Jr., and Matt Wier of Matlock were at her deathbed. Ethel had attended a grain dealers' convention in Sioux City with her husband and while there contracted the flu, although her husband had only recently recovered from the flu so she probably got it from him. Pneumonia developed while she had the flu. Her body was brought to George then to her parent's home on Thursday. The funeral was held on Saturday from the Catholic church in Hull with Rev. Father Roeder conducting services. Because Ethel had had the flu, the body was left in the hearse during services. Relatives and friends from a distance in attendance were: Mr. and Mrs. Joe Putman of near Milbank, South Dakota, Miss Zeta Holey of Fountain, Minnesota, Misses Eva and Mary Weir of Bancroft, Miss Loretta Weir of Des Moines, John Weir and daughter, Mrs. Beacom of Sheldon. |

Biography* | Matthew Patrick McCabe jr, 1891-1967: The youngest of nine and the only son, Matthew was raised on a farm in Sheridan township, Sioux County, Iowa. With an 8th grade education, he continued to farm in the same township after he married. In 1917, when Matthew registered for the WWI draft, he was 25-years-old, single, had no dependents, was a self-employed farmer and resided in Boyden, Iowa. He was described as of medium height and build with blue eyes and dark brown hair. The registration form was signed Matthew Pat McCabe on the 5th of June. For the 1920 growing season, Matthew took on brother-in-law Erwin Rudloff as a partner on the McCabe farm. Erwin, who normally managed a lumber yard, was struggling to recover from the flu he endured during the 19/20 winter and was hoping that working outside would aid in returning to good health. In 1923, Matt married Elizabeth Lucey of Edgewood, Iowa. On Thursday the 12th of November 1924, Matthew almost lost his right arm in a corn husker. While driving the machine he reached to make an adjustment and his coat sleeve caught in the rollers. Matthew stopped the rig at once and was strong enough to keep his arm from entering the rollers. Only Matthew's hand was seriously injured and no bones were broken. He was not able to use that hand for some time. On Sunday the 11th of January 1925, Matthew was driving down the main street in Sheldon when his brand new Buick Six touring car - purchsed the previous August - was badly damaged by another party who was driving on the wrong side of the street. According to a report in the "Boyden Reporter" newspaper: Matthew "was forced to abandon his car and enter it in the hospital for repairs". In 1930, Matthew was living on a rented farm in Sheridan township with his wife, children and a hired-hand farm laborer. On 09 July 1938, Matthew suffered bruises and cuts on his left shoulder when he was attacked by a bull. The bull was in a barn. When Matthew entered to water the animal, the bull head butted him. hooked Matthew's feet with his horns and threw Matthew over a manger. He was renered unconscious for about a half hour. No one on the farm was aware of the incident until Matt came to and made his way into the house. In 1940, they owned their house on the farm valued at $800. The week ending the 31 March, Matthew worked 60-hours. In 1942 he registered for the World War II draft. Matthew was 5'-8.5'' tall, weighed 165 pounds, had blue etes, brown hair, and light brown complexion. He signed as Matthew P. McCabe on the 27th of April. Matthew signed a will on 16 November 1962. He continued to farm until poor health forced him into retirement in 1964. Then Matthew and Elizabeth moved to Edgewood, Iowa to be near her family. Matthew, 75, died on a Tuesday at Edgewood Convalescent Home where he had been a patient for several months. He was survived by wife Elizabeth; sons Matthew of Page, Nebraska, John of Brunswick, Georgia, and Charles of Sheldon, Iowa; daughters Lucille (Richard) O'Kane of Pocahontas, Iowa, Patricia (Robert) of Davenport, Iowa, and Kathryne (Peter) Lenoch of Cuba City, Wisconsin; 36-grandchildren and sister Mrs Kathryne Buren of Sheldon, Iowa. Matthew was preceded by his parents and several sisters. The funeral was held on Saturday at Saint Mark's church in Edgewood and officiated by Rev Nees. Three grandsons and three nephews served as pallbearers. Appleton Funeral Home of Edgewood was in charge. |
