Biography* Erwin Herbert Rudloff, 1890-1940:
Erwin was a first generation German-American. His parents immigrated circa 1870. George, the third of four children and the second of three sons, grew up and was educated in George, Iowa, the town of his birth. Erwin's mother Amelia died in 1894 and his father remarried. In 1916, Erwin, a resident of Primghar, Iowa, was married to Ethel McCabe and was working in a lumber yard for his father's company. When he registered for the WWI draft in 1917. Erwin was described as being of medium height and build with dark blue eyes and light brown hair. Erwin requested an exemption from the draft because he had rheumatism for the last year. He signed as Erwin Henry Herbert Rudloff on June 2nd. Erwin followed his father into the grain business: first, in Primghar, Iowa; then Manson, Iowa; then Steen, Rock County, Minnesota and finally Canton, South Dakota. In 1920, Erwin left a very lucrative position in Manson as manager of the Farmers' Elevator there, but since an attack of the flu the previous winter his health had been poor and he felt that work outside would help restore it. His first wife Ethel McCabe had contracted the flu shortly after himself and died from it. So Erwin partnered with Matt McCabe Jr to work on the McCabe farm for the season. Erwin planned to come up from Manson about March first. He also owned a farm near Ward, South Dakota which he leased out for the ensuing year for half of the crop. In 1924 Erwin married Ella Walton. By 1930, they were renting in Clinton Township, Rock County, Minnesota for $25/month and Erwin was manager of an elevator company. By 1935, the family had moved to Canton, Lincoln County, South Dakota

Erwin, 49, died on a Tuesday at his home in Canton after a lingering illness. He was survived by his second wife Ella, one son, one daughter, brothers A. H. of Lake Crystal, Minnesota and W. W. of Los Angeles, California, step-mother Etje Rudloff, half-bro C. L. and half-sister Louise (William) Kruse jr, all of George, Iowa. Services were held at Immanuel Lutheran church in George on Saturday with the Rev. J. G. Baumgartner officiating. The pulpit bible used was donated by Erwin and classmate Martha Garnmeister on their day of confirmation in 1907. From obit: "May his life be long remembered and his ashes rest in peace."

There is a large Rudloff stone in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Hull, Sioux County, Iowa under which rests the remains of Erwin's first wife Ethel McCabe. Erwin's name and birth date are inscribed on this stone but his death date is not. His obituary states that he is buried in Evergreen cemetery, George, Lyon County, Iowa (along with other members of the Rudloff family including Erwin's parents). And although there is no memorial in findagrave (a/o of today) for Erwin's burial in Evergrreen it seems likely that his obituary is correct.
