Biography* | Francis James Mahon, 1881-1948: Francis was the fourth of eleven children and the second of four sons. He was the oldest of the six who survived childhood - two sons and four daughters. As far as we know he lived his entire life as a dairy farmer in Hartland township, McHenry County, Illinois. Francis, 66, died at home on a Saturday. He had been ill about one-year. Francis was survived by a sister Loretta who lived with him, sisters Mrs Andrew Steffensen and Mrs Adeline Quinlan both of Woodstock, and brother Paul of Freeport, Illinois. The funeral was held at Saint Patrick's Catholic church in Hartland. |

Biography* | Paul R. Mahon, 1882-1960: Paul was the fifth of eleven children and the third of four sons. By 1900 five of the eleven children had died. The family was renting a farm in Hartland township, McHenry County, Illinois. By 1910, Paul, with a fourth grade education, had left the home farm, was boarding in the second ward of Freeport, Stephenson County and working as a laboroer for a medical company. By 1918, when Paul registered for the WWI draft, he and Emma were farming in Orangeville, Stephenson County. They continued to live in that county for the rest of their lives. Paul was described as a man of medium height and build with light blue eyes and brown hair. By 1930 they owned their home in Lancaster township. In 1940, the house was valued at $3,000. Paul died in 1960 at about age 78. |

Biography* | Loretta A. Mahon, 1889-1970: There were 11-children in the family, seven daughters and four sons. In 1900, nine of the eleven were living but we don't know exactly where Loretta fits. Also, she may have been a twin. In 1900, Loretta was the seventh of nine children and the fourth of six daughters. The family was renting a farm in Hartland township, McHenry County, Illinois. Loretta lived in Hartland most if not all of her life. In 1930, she was living with her widowed mother and in 1940 with her brother Francis. Loretta taught in area rural schools for years. She was a member of Altar and Rosary Society at Saint Patrick's in Hartland, the Mariola Club and the Legion of Mary. Loretta, 81, of 510 Dean Street in Woodstock died on a Thursday at Memorial Hospital. She was survived by sisters Mrs Andrew (Helen) Steffensen and Mrs Adeline Quinlan both of Woodstock. And was preceded by her parents, four-brothers and four-sisters. The funeral was held on Saturday at Saint Mary's Catholic church in Woodstock. Schneider-Leucht-Merwin-Cooney funeral home was in charge. |

Biography* | Adaline Mahon Quinlan, 1891-1980: Adaline was one of eleven children born to first generaion Irish-American parents. Her father was born in New Jersey, her mother in Illinois.The Quinlan's were farmers who rented in Hartland township, McHenry County, Illinois. Adaline was married at Saint Patrick's in Hartland by Rev Thomas Kearney. The marriage was witnessed by Ray McGee and Adaline's sister Helen Mahon. In 1920, she and her husband were renting at 709 Dean Street ( a duplex), Woodstock, McHenry County, Illinois. The family moved to Chicago but after her husband died in 1929, the Adaline moved back to Woodstock. In 1930, she was renting for $10/month at 330 Dean Street (a duplex) and working as a house keeper for a private family. By 1935, she and her children were back at 709 Dean Street and renting for $12/month. Circa 1972, Adaline moved into Sunset Manor in Woodstock. Adaline, 89, died on a Monday. She was survived by a son, two daughters, 21 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren and was predeceased by her husband and an infant son. Her funeral was held on Thursday at Saint Mary's Catholic church. The Schneider, Leucht, Merwin and Cooney funeral home was in charge. |

Biography* | Helen A. Mahon Westerman Steffensen, 1893-1991: In 1920, Helen was lodging with the Alphonse & Adaline Quinlan at 709 Dean Street, a duplex in Woodstock's 4th ward, and working as a punch press operator at the typwewriter factory. Helen was married twice. First in 1923 by Rev. Thomas Kearney at St. Patrick's in Hartland to John Westerman. Her brother Frank and sister Loretta were witnesses. John Westerman died in 1944. Second, in 1947, to Andrew Steffensen. In 1930, she and her husband were living at 510 Dean Street in a $6,000 house which he owned. Helen, a resident of Marengo, died on a Monday at Saint Joseph hospital. She was 98. Helen was survived by several nieces and nephews. The funeral was held on Thursday from Saint Patrick's Catholic church in Hartland with burial in the church cemetery. Marengo-Union Funeral Home of Marengo was in charge of arrangements. |

Biography* | Elizabeth J. (Sr Mary Agatha) Downes, 1892-1969: Elizabeth was a first generation Irish-American. Her father was born in Ireland, her mother, a first generation Irish-American herself, was born in Minnesota. The seventh child of nine and the fifth of six daughters, she was born and raised on a farm in Sioux County, Iowa, Elizabeth entered the Order of Servants of Mary (OSM) in 1913 at age 20. She was given the religious name Sister Mary Agatha of the Mother of Sorrows. Elizabeth's first vows were made on 10 August 1915 and her final profession on 15 August 1921. Sister studied for a teaching career at Cherokee Junior College, Creighton University, Harris Teacher's College, and the University of Detroit. Her career took her to many places: Sacred Heart School, Massena, New York; Sacred Heart, East St. Louis, Illinois; St Rose and St Benedict, Omaha, Nebraska; Immaculate Conception, Cherokee, Iowa, St John's, Gilmore City; St Joseph's, Salix, Iowa and; Mount Carmel, Denver. Later, Sister Mary Agatha served as librarian at Holy Ghost School, Omaha. When Sister's father died in 1925, she inherited all of the Sunnyside Addition to Sheldon, Iowa from her father's estate. She was living in East Saint Louis, Illinois at the time. In 1936, in Denver, Colorado. Sister Mary Agatha died in her sleep on a Friday two days after her 77th birthday. She had undergone surgery four days previously on the 3rd of November. Sister was survived by nieces and nephews who came from California, Michigan and Iowa for the funeral. About thirty relatives attended and were served dinner afterwards by the nuns. Father Bohn of Holy Ghost parish was the celebrant. Biography* | Frank Raymond Buren, 1880-1948: Frank was a first generation Dutch-American, the oldest of four children and the only son. His father Rynder, who immigrated from the Netherlands in 1865, became a U.S. citizen by 1880 and the family was living in Washington township in Butler County, Iowa. Frank's mother Angeline was a first generation Dutch-American herself born in Indiana. Frank was educated through the 11th grade. By 1900 the family was living in a house they owned on First Street in LaPorte City (Big Creek township), Blackhawk County, Iowa. The father was now a lumber dealer. By 1910 the family had moved to Grant Street in Boyden (Sheridan township), Sioux County. Frank was not listed with the family and may have been working in Canada. His father was working as a bookeepper for a lumber yard. In late May of 1913, Frank came home to Lyon County from Saskatchewan, Canada to visit the home folks for a couple of days. While there he also married Kathryn McCabe. By August, Frank and Kathryn were living in Stettler, Alberta, Canada. In June of 1915, they returned for another visit and by that winter had left Canada and returned to Lyon County. They commenced farming on the Dan Hansmann farm and expected to move onto one of Dr. Brink's farms east of Granville in the spring of 1917. In 1918, Frank registered for the World War I draft at age 38. He was a self employed farmer living in George, Lyon County, Iowa. Frank was described as being tall and stout with blue eyes, brown hair and no scars. He signed the register Frank Raymond Buren on September 12th. In 1925, Frank and Kathryn were rentig in Plato township in Sioux County. By 1930, Frank and Kathryn were living with Kathryn's widowed mother Hannah McCabe at 601 Sixth Avenue in the 2nd ward of Sheldon in Floyd township. Frank was working as a farm laborer. In 1940, Frank and Katherine were living in a house they owned at 402 West Ninth Street in the 3rd ward of Sheldon. Frank was working as a salesman. He worked 40 weeks in 1939 and earned wages of $600. Frank had no other income. In 1942, at age 62, Frank registered for the World War II draft. He was 6'-4'' tall, weighed 180 pounds, had blue eyes, gray hair, a ruddy complexion and a scar on his chin. He signed as Frank Buren on April 27th. Frank, 68, of Sheldon, a retired farmer, passed away at the State University Hospital in Iowa City [Johnson County] on a Tuesday. He had been confined to the hospital for five weeks. His wife Kathryn was informant on the death cert. Cause of death was peritonitis with intar-abdominal abscesses due to intestinal obstruction. An operation to resection the small bowel was performed on 17 June by Phys. L. L. Zager (MD) on stafff at the hospital. Funeral Services were held in Saint Patrick's Catholic Church in Sheldon on Friday. Funeral director Charles Beckman of Iowa City was in charge. |
