Biography* | Sr Redempta (Margaret) Enright, 1904-1978: The eldest of six children, Margaret was raised on a farm in Carrolton township in Fillmore County, Minnesota. In 1930, she was a student at the College of Saint Teresa in Winona, Minnesota. There were 25 other students at the college plus faculty and staff of 44. That same year Margaret entered the postulancy of the Rochester Franciscans (the sisters of Saint Francis). The following year she professed vows and was assigned housekeeping duty in convents in Minnesota, Ohio and South Dakota. She served for 35-years retiring to Assisi Heights, Rochester in 1969. Sr Redempta, 74, died on a Tuesday at Saint Mary's hospital in Rochester after a brief illness. Death cert information provided from Mayo Clinic records. Cause of death was cerebro-spinal meninggitis (actue & chronic), epidural abscess (3rd lumbar vertebrae), staphylococcus aureus, diabetes mellitus, acute pyelonephritis and adenocarcinoma left kidney. An autopsy was performed. Sr Redempta was attended by Dr. K. E. Holley (MD) of Mayo Clinic. She was survived by a sister Grace Enright of Rochester, three-brothers: Joseph of Lanesboro, Vincent of Fort Worth, Texas and Raymond of Faribault, Minnesota. The funeral was held at Assisi Heights on Thursday with the Right Rev Monsignor Frank Galles officiating. Members of the Knighs of Columus acted as pallbearers and six sisters were honorary pallbearers. Those attending from out-of-town included Grace Enright, M/M Joseph Enright, Vincent Enright, M/M Angelo Connelly, M/M Dan Hennessey, Rose Bell, M/M Bill Horihan, Kathleen Kraling from Fridley, Minnesota and Warren Enright of Saint Paul, Minnesota. Macken Funeral Home of Rochester was in charge. |

Biography* | John Raymond Enright, 1926-2001: Born John Raymond he was always known by his middle name. Raymond was the fifth child and second son born to his father John and the first child of his father's second wife Nellie Towey. Raymond grew up on a farm in Carrolton township in Fillmore County, Minnesota. He suffered from Down's syndrome and never recieved a formal education. Raymond lived in Carrolton until 1945. In 1962, when his mother died, Raymond was living in Fairbault, Minnesota. He returned to Fillmore County in 1985 and was living at 110 Fillmore Place SE in Preston. He never married. Raymond, 75, died on a Saturday at Saint Mary's hospital in Rochester, Olmsted County, Minnesota. Cause of death was peritonitis, perforation of viscus, percutaneous enterogastrostomy tube and recurrent aspiration pneumonia. He was survived by a younger brother and a sister Grace Enright of Rochester. The funeral was held on Thursday at Johnson-Riley Funeral Home in Lanesboro with the Rev Francis Galles officiating. |

Biography* | Madalyn Mary Scanlan Ellingson Dybevik, 1903-1988: Madalyn6, the youngest child of four and the second daughter, grew up on a farm in Carrolton township, Fillmore County, Minnesota. By 1930, she had left the home farm with one-year of high school and was rooming with Martin & Mary Evans at 207 South Seventh Street in Lacrosse, Wisconsin. Madalyn was working as a checker in a laundry. By 1935, she was back in Fillmore County and was married to Howard Ellingson in that year. In 1939, Madeline worked 35-weeks as a candler7. at a produce company and earned $455 ($13/week). In 1940, Madalyn and her husband were living in a house that they owned, valued at $2,500, in Lanesboro. Her parents were living with them. Madalyn's father Thomas died in 1947 and her husband Howard died in 1948. She ordered a flat granite grave marker for Howard from the U. S. Military and signed the application Mary Madalyn Ellingson. In 1950, Madalyn was an egg grader for the produce company. Her mother Johanna was living with her and died the following year. Madalyn married George Bybevik in 1963 and by 1971 was living in Stoughton, Dane County, Wisconsin. Madalyn, 96, resident of 801 Braxton Place in Madison, died on a Tuesday at Manor Care Health Services in Madison. Cause of death was congestive heart failure. Madalyn was attended by Dr. Susan J. Carson of Verona. Genevieve Means of Cherokee, Arkansas was the informant on the death cert. Private family services were held later. Joyce-Ryan Funeral Home, 5701 Odana Road, Madison assisted. |

- We have found no birth record for Madalyn but there is ample secondary evidence that Madalyn was her middle name and that her first name was Mary. She is listed as Mary in Social Security records, her own death certificate and obituary and on her tombstone. And although her name appears most often in various forms closer to Madeline, she herself preferred the spelling Madalyn.

Biography* | Leota H. Stuerman Gossen, 1911-1979: Leota was the second of two children and the only daughter born to her mother Ella Schmidt, a first generation German-American. In 1910, before Leota was born, here parents were renting a farm in Allison township in Lyon County. Leota's mother Ella died 20-days after Leota's birth in 1911. Leota's father Peter, also a first generation German-American, left the two babies in the care of Ella's mother Engeburg Schmidt in Rock Rapids and circa 1918 married Maude Gossman. He had three children by his second wife, two-sons and one-daughter. Leota was raised by her grandmother. In 1930, at the age of 18, Leota was working as an office assistant to the School Superintendant at the high school. Later she worked for the County Superintendant. In 1940, she and her grandmother were living at 201 South Adams Street. On a Saturday in 1942, Leota was married to Michael Gossen at the First Lutheran Church parsonage in South Sioux City, Nebraska by Pastor Rev. Ernest N. Haugse. Leota and Michael had both attended Rock Rapids schools enrolling in kindergarten the same year and graduating together in 1929. The bride wore a navy blue dress with touches of white and a corsage of talisman roses and sweet peas. Witnesses were Mrs Bess Buckey and George Dunn of Sheldon. The following Tuesday the new groom Michael left to join the U.S.Army and Leota continued to live with her grandmother. After Michael returned from the war, she and Michael operated a motel in Rock Rapids until 1957 when they moved to Brookings, South Dakota, where they bought a motel which they operated until 1964. Michael died in 1974. Leota, 68, of Brookings, died on a Saturday at Brookview Manor nursing home. Surviving were two half-brothers, Howard Stuerman of Gary, South Dakota, and Albert Stuerman of Enid, Oklahoma; a half-sister, Mrs Robert Dela, Lakewood, California, and several nieces and nephews. Services were held Thursday morning at the Rudes Funeral Home in Brookings and in the afternoon at Rock Rapids. |

Biography* | John H. Rahilly, 1876-1952: John H. was a first generation Irish-American farmer. His father John Rahilly was from County Clare and first settled in Sesquehana County, Pennsylvania with his own parents. John H.'s mother Ellen Twohey was from County Cork and first settled in Canada with her parents before moving to Iowa and then Olmsted County. In 1880, the family farmed in High Forest township of Olmsted County, Minnesota. In 1900, John H.s widowed mother Ellen owned a mortgaged farm of 640-acres in section 31 of Grand Meadow township in Mower County. John, completed two-years of college and had nine siblings, five of whom were living in 1900. In 1911, John operated the family farm which by this time had grown to 1,000-acres. On this farm were kept about fifty head of horses, 200 head of cattle and about 200 head of hogs. John was chairman of Grand Meadow township, one of the directors of the Mower County Fair Association, secretary and director of the Mower County Farmers’ Telephone Company, and an officer of his school district. He also took an active part in the affairs of the church at Grand Meadow and was one of its trustees. By 1918, he had retired from farming and was working as a farm inspector. In 1920, John and Beatrice owned a mortage- free home at 404 Mankato Street in Austin's 2nd ward. By 1930, they owned an $18,000 house at 1025 Postland Avenue in the 7th ward of Saint Paul, Ramsey County. John was proprietor of an industrial products company. In 1940, they were renting, for $55/month, at 623 Grand Ave also in the 7th ward of Saint Paul. John was working as a real estate salesman. Later he worked as a guard at a transfer Company. He was examined by Dr. C. A. Ingerson (Coroner). John was survived by his wife Beatrice, daughter Mrs Genevieve (Jerry) Gearin, sons John J and Foch J of Santa Monica, sisters Mrs Hannah Webber and Mrs Susan McGreavey and brother Richard all of Austin and 8 grandchildren. The funeral was held on Saturday at Saint Luke's. Charles A Godbout, 360 W 7th Street, Saint Paul, was in charge. |

In 1939, Genevieve earned wages of $980 working as a saleswoman in a retail clothing store. In 1940, the family was living at 623 Grand Ave also in Saint Paul. In August of that year she married Edward Gearin. Edward died eleven years later in 1951. In 1953, Genevieve went to work for the Chicago & North Western RailRoad as a stenographer. Thirty years after her husband Edward died, Genevieve was married for a second time to James Healy in 1981 Genevieve, 94, died on a Wednesday. She was survived by four daughters, one son, five grandchildren and 11-great grandchildren. She was preceded by her parents, an infant sister, two husbands, and brothers John and Foch Rahilly. A memorial was held on Saturday at Assumption Catholic church. Memorials to Presbyterian Homes or Health East Hospice were preferred. Roseville Memorial Chapel was in charge. |

After the war he worked as a land surveyor. John, 72, of 2259 Rockwood in Saint Paul, died on a Saturday at Regina Residence Nursing Home in Hastings. The informant on the death cert was his sister Genevieve Healy of 1180 West Skillman in Roseville. Cause of death was acute pulmonary edema. John was attended by Dr. Robert H. Nelson, MD of 1320 Fontage Road South in Hastings. John was survived by his wife Dorothy (she died six-days later), one son and sister Genevieve (Mrs James M.) Healy. A Memorial service was held on Tuesday the 24th at the Regina Residence. Memorials were preferred to Regina Residence or Saint Joseph's Hospice. Godbout & Sons, 560 W 7th, St. Paul was in charge. |

In 1939, he earned wages of $960. During World War II, Foch was a Y1C (Yeoman 1st class) in the U.S.Navy. Moved to Santa Monica, California and by 1952 moved to Long Beach. There Foch was comptroller of the Van Ronkel Company and was living at 1437-21st. Later he was office manager for Consolidated Photo Company of Los Angeles. Foch, 36, formerly of 2041 Randolph, died at home at 3075 Iroquois Avenue, Long Beach on a Friday. He was survived by his wife Jean Cannon, two daughters and two sons all of Long Beach, his mother Beatrice Rahilly, one sister Genevieve Gearin and one brother John Rahilly. Mottell's & Peek was in charge of arrangements in Long Beach. The funeral was held on Wednesday at Holy Spirit church in Saint Paul. Charles H Godbout & Son was in charge. |

Biography* | Daniel Edward Phelan, 1877-1963: Daniel, a first generation Irish-American, was born on the family farm in Bristol township, Worth County, Iowa. His father was born in Ireland. His mother, a first generation Irish-American herself, was born in New York. Daniel's early schooling took place in Lake Mills, Winnebago County, the closest town to the farm. Later he schooled at the Academy in Nora Springs (Cerro Gordo & Floyd Counties) and then the State University of Iowa graduating from the College of Law in 1901. After graduation Daniel moved to Montana where he practiced law in Glasgow, Valley County for three-years. Returning to Iowa in 1904, Daniel opened a law office in Fort Dodge, Hamilton County. In 1910, he was renting at 822 First Avenue South in the 4th ward and working as a deputy U. S. Marshall. After their marriage, Daniel and his wife lived in the KC Buliding in the 4th ward of Fort Dodge in Webster County, Iowa. By 1918, they owned, with mortgage, at 347-10th Avenue North. By 1928, at 913½ 3rd Avenue North. In 1930, he and his wife owned a $26,000 house - the Phelan Apartments - at 913 Third Avenue North. By 1934, they lived at 308½ 1st Avenue North. By 1936, at 217 South 6th. In 1937, Daniel entered into a law practice partnership with his future son-in-law, Lloyd Karr, under the firm name Phelan & Karr. Daniel continued to operate out of an office in Fort Dodge, while Lloyd Karr opened an office in Webster City. By 1939, Daniel and his wife were living at 704½ Central Avenue. They were listed at 704½ Central Avenue in 1941, at 1417 1st Avenue North in 1944, at 704½ Central Avenue in 1946, at 1220½ 2nd Avenue North in 1951. They were not listed in Fort Dodge in 1954. A lifelong Catholic, Daniel attended Corpus Christi church in Fort Dodge and then St Thomas Acquinas in Webster City. Daniel E Phelan, age 85, died on a Friday in Ellen's Nursing Home, Fort Dodge where he had been for 10-months. He was survived by one daughter, Mrs Lloyd (Margaret) Karr of Webster City and two-grandchildren and one sister. Daniel was preceded in death by his wife in 1941, one daughter, Mary Kathryn Levine who died in 1943, his parents and three brothers. The funeral was held from Saint Thomas Acquinas on Monday and was officiated by Msgr. A. A. Halbach. Pallbearers were Morris Westervelt, Carlton Crosley, Barney Ermels, Peter Ermels, Richard Hahne, and Dr Ralph Dickason. Foster funeral home was in charge of arrangements. |

Biography* | Edward Michael Gearin, 1908-1951: Edward was the third child of six and the oldest of three sons. His parents were both born in Wisconsin. His father Michael was a first generation Irish-American. His mother Cecelia's parents were born in Scotland and Belgium. In 1910, the family owned a mortgaged house at 349 Fourth Avenue South in the 2nd ward of South Saint Paul. The father Michael was working as a switchman at a railroad terminal. Circa 1911 they moved into Saint Paul when Edward was 2-years-old. In 1920, they were renting at 578 Winslow Avenue in the 6th ward. The father Michael was selling soft drinks on his own account. In 1930, his family was renting, for $40-a-month, at North 947 Laurel Avenue in the 2nd ward. Edward was working as a truck driver for a newspaper. His father was a shoe salesman. Edward's father died in 1935. In 1940, his mother was renting at 932 Laurel Avenue for $35/month. Edward and four of his siblings were living with her. Edward was working as a chemist at a wholesale paint business. Two of his siblings were working there also. In 1939, Edward had earned $1,400. Later in 1940 he married Genevieve Rahilly. In 1950 they lived at 930 Laurel and Edward was a traveling salesman for Saint Paul Lead Company. Edward, 42, died at home on a Thursday. Cause of death was coronary thrombosis (instantly), coronary arteriosclerosis (4-years), had coronary thrombosis in 1947 also. He was attended by Dr. C. N. McCloud (MD). His wife was informant on the death cert. He was survived by his wife Genevieve, five children, his mother Cecilia Gearin, sisters Mrs Walter Flesher, Mrs Louis St Pierre and Mrs Le Roy Williams, brothers Laurence, Howard and Robert Gearin. The funeral was held at St Luke's Catholic church on Wednesday. Charles A Godbbout & Son of Saint Paul was in charge. |
