Biography* | Owen McCabe, ca1824-1900: On Owen's tombstone his birthyear is listed as 1825 but he was probably born a year-or-two earlier. According to his declaration of intent to become a citizen of the United States, filed in McHenry County Illinois Circuit Court, Owen sailed from Liverpool on 20 May 1850, arriving at the Port of New York on 24 Jun 1850. He continued south to Panama where he walked across the Isthmus and caught a ship for Callifornia (from 1869-1969 Fountain (Minnesota) Centennial "Pages of the Past"). There he was a forty-niner. The first record found of him in the U.S., was the 1857 census of Minnesota. There he appears as a farmer and naturalized U. S. citizen in Fountain township, Fillmore County, Minnesota. In addition to the declaration of intent, which Owen filed in McHenry County, Illinois on 12 April 1858, two days earlier, on 10 April 1858, he also filed a will in McHenry County. In it, he bequeathed 160 acres (legal description and location not provided) to sister Bridget McCabe of Chatfield, Fillmore County, Minnesota. In 1875, Owen, single, is living with his widowed sister-in-law, Catherine Conerty McCabe. Later that year, at the age of about 51, he married and preceeded to sire six children, the last of which was born when Owen was about 62-years-of-age. Owen, about 76, died on a Sunday. |
