Biography* Charles Raymond Foster, 1895-1954:
Charles Foster's existence was learned from his father-in-law's 1935 obit. Charles, one of seven children, was born in Minnesota as were both of his parents. Charles' mother was a first generation Irish-American. In 1900 the family was renting a farm in Forrestville of Fillmore County. Charles was educated through the 8th grade. By 1910, the family had moved to the 3rd ward of Oakes in Dickey County, North Dakota. They owned a mortgaged home on Eighth Street and the father Francis was working as a janitor in a public school. Of the six children still living, Charles was the third of four sons and had two-younger sisters. By June 1917, he had left home and was living about 175-miles east in Staples in Todd County, Minnesota. While there Charles registered for the World War I draft. He was single, 21-years-old, and working as a boiler-maker's helper for the Northern Pacific RailRoad. Charles was described as being of medium height and build with blue eyes and black hair. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on 25 February 1918 and made a cook for Company K, 351st Infantry, 88th Division. Charles was discharged on 04 June 1919. In 1921, he married Lucille Stanton in Fillmore County. In 1930, Charles, Lucille and their child, were renting at 2024 Superior Street in Duluth, Saint Louis County, Minnesota for $25/month. Charles was working as a brakeman on the railroad. Sometime after 1935, the family moved to Brainerd in Crow Wing County. As a crossing watchman for the Northern Pacific RR, Charles worked 13-weeks in 1939 and earned $240. He worked 40-hours in the week-ending 31 March 1940. The family was renting at 205 Second Avenue in the 3rd ward for $22/month. In 1942, when Charles registered for the World War II draft, they were living at 621 North 6th Street in Brainerd. He was 5'-9'' tall, weighed 124 pounds with blue eyes, brown hair and a ruddy complexion. Obvious physical characteristics were described as ''right arm off thru the arm muscle and half of right foot gone'. He signed C. R. Foster on the 26th April. By 1950, Charles was retired and they were living at 1106 5th Avenue NE. He was receiving non-wage yearly income of $1,940. Charles was a member of Saint Francis Catholic church, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Eagles, Moose and the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen.
