Biography* | Blanch Lynch Conerty Jurs, 1881-1952: Blanch was the second of six children and the second daughter. Her given name, in the source used for her birth, was recorded as Wilhelmine Blanch and her birthplace as Dartford, Green County. In 1880, the year before Blanch's birth, the family was living in Brooklyn, Green Lake County. There is no Dartford listed today in either Green or Green Lake Counties. However, there is a Dartford cemetery in Green Lake County that is partly in Green Lake City and partly in Brooklyn Town. One or the other of these places may have been named Dartford at some time in the past. BTW, there is also a Brooklyn Town in Green County - just to add to the confusion - but no Dartford. Blanch's father Joseph was born in New York, her mother in Wisconsin. Another daughter was born in Wisconsin in 1882 and then by 1894 when the next child - surviving in 1900 - was born, that event took place in Illinois. In 1900, the family was living in Dorr township, McHenry County, Illinois and the father Joseph was station agent for the railroad. Blanch, who completed three-years of high school, was working as a telegraph operator. When she was married in 1904 to Charles Conerty by the Presbyterian pastor Wm. R. Shelt, Blanche's father was one of the witnesses and the pastor's wife was the other. By 1910, Blanch, husband Charles and their four-daughters were renting at 3802 West Huron Street in the 35th ward of Chicago, Illinois. Charles was a conductor on the railroad. Charles Conerty abandoned the family soon after and by 1914, Blanche was living on North Lawndale and working as a dressmaker. In 1915, she listed herself as a widow. Circa 1925, Blanche married Charles Jurs. In 1930, they were renting at 3342 Ohio Street in Chicago's 28th ward. None of Blanche's daughters were living with them. In 1940, they were renting at 436 Saint Louis Avenue also in the 28th ward. Charles Jurs died in 1941. Blanche, 71, died on a Wednesday. |
