Biography* | | Helen M. Scanlan Winner, 1898-1995: The eldest of four, Helen and her siblings were raised on a farm in Carrolton township, Fillmore County, Minnesota. Helen graduated from Lanesboro High School and from Saint Francis School of Nursing in La Crosse, Wisconsin in 1920. At the beginning of 1920, she was living at Saint Anne's Maternity Hospital on Market Street in La Crosse with 48 other nurses and a bookkeepper. By January 1921 Helen was living at 450 North Charter Street in Madison, Wisconsin. In November of that year Helen married William Winner and by 1922 they were living in Marshfield in Wood County, Wisconsin. By 1930, they owned a $5,500 house at 702 West Blodgett Street in the second ward of Marshfield. In 1935 the family moved to Madison in Dane County and in 1940 were living at 646 Knickerbocker Street in the second ward. Helen was a member Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic church and the Queens Guild, Saint Mary's Hospital Auxiliary and Dane County Veterinary Auxiliary. Helen, 96, formerly of 4728 Regent Street in Madison, died on a Saturday at Rest Haven Nursing Home in Verona. Cause of death was arteriosclerotic heart disease (years) and hypertension. Orest I. Kostelyna of Madison was her physician. The informant on the death cert was a daughter of Helen's. She was survived by two sons, three daughters, one sister Mrs Madalyn Dybevik of Madison, 23-grandchildren, 25 great-grand-children and a one great-great. Helen was preceded by her parents, husband Dr. William Winner and two brothers Leon and Jack. The funeral was held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 405 South Owen Drive on Wednesday by Rev Kenneth Fiedler. Joyce Funeral Home, 5701 Odana Rd, was in charge. Memorials were suggested to the Queen of Peace Endowment Fund. |
