| Biography* | | Ellen Flemming Kennedy, 1902-1988:
Ellen - listed as Mary Ellen at her marriage and as Mary E in the 1940 census - grew up in Minneota, Minnesota and completed Normal school at age 17. Her father William, a frist generation Irish-American worked as a thresher. Her mother Maggie was a first generation German-American. Ellen studied to become a teacher and taught in Minneota and in Rock County from 1919-to-1939. Married in 1939 at age 36 Ellen bore four-children. She and her husband Leonard farmed in Rock County and moved into Garretson in 1986. Ellen was a 4-H leader in Rock County for 25-years.
Ellen, 85, of Garretson, died on a Friday at McKennan hospital in Sioux Falls. She was survived by husband Leonard, three-sons, a daughter, two-brothers Art and Bob Flemming both of Minneota and a sister Sr Jane Flemming of Minneapolis. The funeral was held on Monday at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic church in Garretson. Minnehaha Funeral Home of Garretson was in charge. |
