Biography* | Arthur Leo Donohue, 1898-1974: Arthur, a first generation Irish-American was the eighth of eight sons, with one younger sister. There are small discrepancies about his birthdate. Arthur's social security record lists his birth date as the 3rd of May as does his tombstone. His military records lists the 5th of May and his obit has the 6th. Arthur's father Thomas died in 1899, the same year the youngest child was born. In 1900 the widow Delia and all nine of her children were renting an apartment at 28 Saint Mary's in the 4th ward of Yonkers, Westchester County, New York. There were six apartments in the building. The youngest child Mary died in that year. By 1910 Delia was renting an apartment, in another 6-unit building, at 144 Riverdale Avenue also in the 4th ward. Six of the sons were with her. Arthur was educated through the eighth grade at Saint Mary's School. It seems likely that all the sons had to forgo furthur education beyond grade school to help support the familly. By 1915, the family was renting at 172 Stanley Avenue in the 4th ward. They would stay at this address for at least 10-years. In 1918, Arthur registered for the WWI draft. He listed his occupation as a manager for James Butler, Inc of 257 Riverdale Avenue, Yonkers. Arthur was described as being of medium height and slender build with blue eyes and blond hair. He signed the registration Art Donohue on the 12th of September. In 1920, Arthur was working as a shoe salesman. Soon after, Arthur was employed with the City of Yonkers in Civil Service. He would log 46-years with city by his retirement in 1968. In 1925, only three sons were still at home with Delia. Arthur, one of the three, was working as a timekeeper. By 1930, Delia was renting at 26 Robbins Place in the 4th ward for $75/month. They had a radio. Arthur was working as a clerk for the City of Yonkers. Mercedes Brennan, who Arthur would marry in 1942, moved into the neighborhood in 1930 and she and Arthur were never more than a 15 minute walk apart for the next 12-years. Wonder how they met? His mother Delia died in 1940 and Arthur was living with his brother Charles at 99 Saratoga Avenue which they were renting for $45/month. Arthur was working as a bartender at a bar & grill. He worked 48-hours the week ending 30 March. In 1939, Arthur worked 52-weeks and earned wages of $1,040. He registered for the World War II draft in 1942. Arthur was described as being 5ft-7in in height and weighiing 150 pounds with blue eyes, brown hair and light brown complexion. He was living with his brother Charles at 2 Berkley Avenue in Yonkers and was employed by the City of Yonkers at the Yonker City Garage on Main Street. Arthur signed the registration on 14 February. On August 6th of that year he married Mercedes Brennan at Saint Peter's and two-weeks later enlisted in the U.S. Army. Arthur was released nine-months and eleven days later on 31 May 1943. He went on to become Commander of the Crescent Post American Legion and had been president for ten-years. Arthur also held posts as a director of the State Civil Service Forum, a director of the Yonkers Retired Civil Service Employees Association and as a Deputy Public Works Department Commissioner. Arthur and Mercedes traveled extensively and spent time at their weekend home in Lake Carmel, New York about an hour away by car in Putnam County. Arthur, 76, died on a Friday at Yonker's General Hospital after an illness of three-months. He was survived by his wife Mercedes, brother Thomas and many nieces and nephews. Arthur was predeceased by his parents and brothers James, John, Walter, Francis, Lawrence and Charles. The funeral was held Monday at Saint Mary's Catholic church on South Broadway. Flynn Memorial Home, 325 South Broadway was in charge. |
